Mal held it in right through that 30minute bulliten. By the endof it his eyes were bright red and they guy couldnt hold it in much longer, he said good night with tears running down his face but still acted as professional as he could. Watched this full broadcast here in Victoria and it'll be one I wont forget.
Mal joined Ten in 87, hoping to help David Johnston and Jo Pearson plus Rob Gell defend Ten Eyewitness News's #1 rating against Brian Naylor's National Nine News, which they did, even through Jo and Rob had to leave Ten and were replaced by Tracy Curro from Brisbane, who continued with David and Mal Ten's news rating success until late 1988.

Mal was Brian's archrival at Ten from 1987 until 1998 when he retired, and was his former colleague at 7 until Brian moved to 9 in 1978.
How sad he was that day, telling the nation the sad passing of his former colleague and friend!

Even though Brian was a big name in Victoria, the whole nation knew him through those travel documentaries he did in the '90s.
What a tragic family they are...
As TelevisionAU said, very well written!

Mal's voice sounded shaky too.
RIP Brian Naylor and all the other victims of the fire. Condolences from Canada.
