You didn't understand, the amount that is hinted in the movie was about the aztec sacrificing thousands of slaves as the spanish mentioned would of destroyed left them with out workers. I have question about that since the spanish documentation is questionable. You mentioned that the winners of the ball game would get sacrificed obviously they would be considered high ranking compared to a slave. And for mayan folk those who had higher spirtual power were ideal for sacrifice.
