6:44 i cant set it to 5, it only goes to 1...dont know did i do something wrong... btw thanks a lot, i must do a project in blender for a college, you helped me a lot :)
When I am going to select "deflection" on the second tab for my Plane, The only thing I get is a tab saying "Object is not a softbody" and no "Deflection" button. I use Blender v2.49 for Mac. Can somebody help me?
For the new blender, there are 4 little windows with a few tabs, one window is Fields and Collisions, your gonna want to click collision for the plane and it'll work.
When you start up Blender, there's a splash screen that tells what version it is. Otherwise, you can click on Help > About Blender... to view the splash screen again.
OK, after all the bitching about missing buttons and BS - I just played around a bit, 2.48a is a little more advanced already, so switch brain to "on", even if this a step-by-step tut :P I just couldn't figure out the "bake" thing (I'm a n00b, too), but somehow it didn't matter, as it just rendered fine.
I hope you'll make more tutorials. I like them, because I (as a German ^^) can understand your English very well so it's easy for me to follow you ... ;)
*now I realize I have a bit of a problem with colors... and you do know I meant boyish as much as getting a training bra would help you prove you're a man (completely opposite).
Aye aye... it's fairly simple to do, but I still won't upgrade to 2.46 forever. I have it as a second version. I'm gonna do a tut with that, so chill, nobody's getting left behind.
ya ive got the latest version of blender and uh when i select the plane and try click the deflection thing for the soft body collision its not there it just says "this is not a soft body"
I just started working with YafRAY, managed to get fantastic stills (because of the rendertime).
I can't really get an excellent caustics effect (mind you, I haven't seen any tut on YafRAY, I am just hoping to adapt my knowledge and logic to see if I can get it all right).
So I guess I am going to start doing YafRAY tuts pretty soon!
I don't even know what caustics is yet. I just tried Yafray, because I saw some nice fluid sims done with it. It became a lot darker though and the colored shadows were gone.
Basically, caustics is the photon redirection. YafRAY calculates the maximum bounces of the given photons(from a mirror or through a transparent object).
Basically in real-life, when you pour water in a glass, you see light getting concentrated in some points ; when you look at underwater videos you see some light things on the bottom ; when you put a ring on top of a surface, you see the light forming weird enough.
but every raytracer has to bounce photons from reflective surfaces and through transparant ones, right ? If it does not do that, you don't get everything. Is caustics a more accurate way of following the photons ?
Yea, it doesn't create transparent shadows, it does the exact way the photons go through the material, "taking" the light.
In Blender Internal, they did a pretty cool thing, the transparent shadow: looks like a real shadow, but with the color of the material. It takes less time than a real caustic, and looks pretty good for most of the projects.
Still, if you want to do some HD realistic demo, I'd suggest learning Yaf(a)RAY.
thanks so much! this was a great and very clear tutorial...except I think I'm overloading my laptop, since I tried to click play, and it's going VERY slowly lol
Dude, patience... Well, patience untill you get an octo-core duo, then you'll have it done in a sec.
And, if you currently have a good graphics card, get GELATO. An external renderer, which with a little scipt can render Blender, too. Since Blender uses pure CPU power, it takes a lot to render, but using GPU... well...
ok ack - your voice cuts out RIGHT when the animation part starts! how do I do the final process of putting it in the animation? silly youtube and their 10 minute limit...
BAKE. Either that or you can render it straight. Baking is used for continuous animation, like you want to examine different positions at different frames.

@seljakmen
Glad I helped!
As for the depth thing... I tried multiple versions of Blender to see if that happens to me.
I have come with 2 theories:
-you're using another render engine that is integrated in Blender ( i. e. cycles, slg, Lux ) and something won't allow you to change that value
-you're using a faulty Blender version (try downloading the latest one from blender. dotorg OR different versions from graphicall dotorg)
Hope it sheds some light!

the deflection buttons and such you mentioned are not in blender 2.48
GodzillaVideos 3 years ago
That's why it's a 2.45 tut.
Besides, look for deflection in another panel, on the left.
agent47crows 3 years ago
How did you umm extrude the plane out in the beginning of the video? I know this is a nooby question, but I'm new to Blender.

You just press W (once you've selected the zone you want to subdivide) and press Subdivide or Subdivide Multi.
agent47crows 3 years ago
Hey. Nice Tutorial, but I can't find the "rigidity" in Blender 2.47
The same problem with deflection. Could someone help me please?
Phenom9600 3 years ago
Thanks.
Yeah, sorry about that, since 2.46, there have been some minor changes in the look.
Basically, it's still THERE, where you found the other softbody options and stuff.
As for deflection, there is a new panel for it, called COLLISION (should be somewhere on the left side of the whole physics panel).
Cheers!
agent47crows 3 years ago

razputen91 3 years ago
Ye probably skipped the deflection part (mostly because this tut is for 2.45 or lower).
Anyhoo, you can do deflect for a mesh in the same category (just look for the "Deflection" panel, somewhere on the left side of the bar).
agent47crows 3 years ago
just cant find deflection what ever i click

As for recording, a "custom" edition of HyperCam2. Either that or FRAPS

agent47crows 4 years ago
I'm having a problem in the very beginning...the first time I press Alt + A to test, the plane AND the cube both move down...what am I doing wrong?
DemonicAyngel 4 years ago
Well, for the plane, you ENABLED SOFTBODY, instead of SOFTBODY Deflection. The plane must only deflect the softbody, not be one.
As for the cube, you'll figure it out once the plane works.
Stay cool!
