The fascinating timbre and soaring sense of the words (without, however, punching out any of them in particular, in the expressionistic fashion) are very much in evidence. Compared to the other 1926 takes, one also notes her ability to re-define herself, find her voice and manner, MAKE the performance happen. A great crative artist.
Ellen, thank you for sharing - I enjoy all this stuff. Momentarily I was reminded of the opening scenes to Herzog's incredible film Kasper Hauser. Admittedly not to everyone's taste, but to me a great filmmaker. Cheers - Manfread.
Hi Manfreastraw: Confess to not being fammiliar with Kasper Hauser. How might this film be associated with Mary Garden? Thank You. Cheers, etc. Doug --
What is immediately obvious is the shape of her voice. On the breath, focused tone, nary a wobble to be found. She still has good control. So, yes, the top may be without a few of the highest tones. But, considering the roles she sang and the use she put her voice through, she is stil sounding great.
