This song is hard to sing well because it's really quite an oddity - it's a tragic, sad song with bizarre lyrics. It doesn't really work as a soul or R & B track. My favourite version is Chet Baker's - he draws out it's sadness, as does Sarah Vaughan's version. I like Chaka Khan but I wish she wouldn't attempt difficult jazz standards.
