Soccer shin guards are my fave. I don't worry about hitting my head - I've done 10's of thousands of km per year on bikes and in races - it's the hands and the hips that pay the price of a crash. On a uni - shins get gored now and then and it takes a while to heal. Gloves with more of a wrist guard are better - but I've never found any - but I've had a wrist hurt for quite a while after a high speed dismount when I was learning.
i have been unicycling for 4 months and i have never once fallen on my hands
