I personally don't see what is the point of degrading Harry Potter...both are great novels and movies in my opinion. Although LOTR of course is a lot more classic and better than Harry Potter. I like both of them. However, I don't really like HP movies. (I only like HP 1&2 Movies)

Personally, I think that's how it started out, then as the movies were released, the characters grew up and it ended up being a story which would fit everyone (in my opinion).

Because movie have to be adapted for screenplay causing many parts and characters to be cut out or modifiy. But the whole tale of Silmarillion is abit like a bible story, between good and evil. The late Mr Tolkein will be upset I guess, for people nowadays indulge in meaningless fanstasy than actual work of Literature. I would rate HP as a kids book. But the SIlmarillion is a whole new level of maturity. He created the whole whole of middle earth including several language of Elves, Man and Dwarfs, and based the book on actual life experiences.

When we watch them years later as adults, we see that there is a whole great story behind this entire universe, whether it be Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, or Star Trek, it's all the same for us. A different setting, but a whole world to discover.

@Zintack I don't see why not, the comparison is legit, publishers will make sure that the books whatever they are selling speaks the loudest for PR and marketing to improve sales. Then the market will decide what books they will buy and right now this two are definitely close competitor of each other. Same genre which is fantasy, generally same plot, good vs evil. Whats not to compare, even candidate for Presidency we compare. You may chose not to vote, but it's not the same for others.

I'm the complete opposite, in fact I hated HP, because there are too much fantasy element, as in referrence or metaphor to life, when this kids grow up on such books, they realise, life sucks at times, and life is not going change like that with a swing of wand. Unless people born in the Ritchie Rich kind of family, I've got nothing to say. And yeap LOTR is the best,Tolkein spend his life creating a whole world of Silmarillion, now his son continues it after him.

@hellsSG Well, been there, done that, it's quite disturbing at times when movie don't match with books lol. Because movie have to be adapted for screenplay causing many parts and characters to be cut out or modifiy. But the whole tale of Silmarillion is abit like a bible story, between good and evil. LOTR is like a subsection of it. It's like the age we are in now, full of conflict between good and bad in life. That's why LOTR is so in touch with people who reads it, life is like that.

@MrImastinker Well opinions differ, it's arguable, I respect that. I'm a proponent for the side of LOTR. I have my reasons, If i have kids I rather they read the Silmarillion than HP. When reading I take into consideration on the meaning > content. And yes LOTR has better meaning and content, but weak character viewpoint as they have many in my view. I just can't take the fact that people cried just because the last HP book is released in the news. So yea, well that just me.

i love both LoTR and HP, but cmon. first 4 movies were good, then Potter was sliding off the ice and the rest of the movies were a bit cheesy. LoTR kept it wide interesting and had a knowledge everyone lacks. also LoTR books are way better than HP, i think HP books were very good, but words wont describe the adventure behind Rings

The late Mr Tolkein will be upset I guess, for people nowadays indulge in meaningless fanstasy than actual work of Literature. I would rate HP as a kids book. But the SIlmarillion is a whole new level of maturity. He created the whole whole of middle earth including several language of Elves, Man and Dwarfs, and based the book on actual life experiences.

@gamercfc They both have books, they both fall under Fantasy genre, and they both talked about Good vs Evil, but the maturity of the plot, story and content is what I'm talking about. And one more thing, I never use year release as guidelines, cause a good movie would be timeless at anytime they release. Imagine watching the news, seeing kids at their late teens crying over how they grow up with HP, as if it's a tragedy or sort, it's pathetic. It's a marketing virus on kid's book.

I can honestly cry, everytime I realize that there will no more LOTR movies to come. No more Frodo, no more Samwise. NO MORE of this epic songs/soundstrack. No more of this amazing stories. This world lives happily ever after, and there's nothing I can do about it, though I wish I could. Frodo and the rest has to get out there again, searching for new adventures! No movie or book can top this story. Well, that's my opinion of course.

When we watch these movies as children, we only see people fighting and something that would be cool to do. When we watch them years later as adults, we see that there is a whole great story behind this entire universe, whether it be Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, or Star Trek, it's all the same for us. A different setting, but a whole world to discover.
