  • @dedabea - at about 2:12 they almost get screwed up with 'everywhere the sand shifts'....lol all I know is Patty Griffin is one of the most underappreciated artists out there.

  • I myself love Natalie Maines but if she just had a little of Patty Griffins class one of the great bands The Dixie Chicks would still be relevant.Nothing to do with what she said about the president, she just doesn't seen to have the ability to shut up....

  • Hi- Don't know what tronno" " or needafix said but this is Exquisite TIGHT harmony. Often only achieved by siblings who know each other so well. Is VERY difficult to do . TRY it!

Watch Patty's face as she looks at Natalie with knowing appreciation/admiration and listen to the crowds response. Those with an ear for this style of music hear the perfection. Love to All.

  • love this.....no, it's not quite perfect but imho it just adds character. patty wrote 2 or 3 of the dixie chicks' big hits and they named an album after one of her songs......lol so nat can't be all bad.

  • @misscassafrass1 Not quite perfect? Where?

It's not like Patty wrote those hits *for* the Dixie Chicks - she wrote some beautiful songs and because the Dixie Chicks recognized their worth, chose to record them.

  • Great stuff!

  • Trailrunner78 as an American you have freedom of speech no matter where you are, it is a sad state of affairs that an American speaking their mind famous or not could be crucified by not only the citizens they share the rights with but corporate America tearing a successful career apart in retaliation shame on us all for letting it happen!

  • heartfelt, soulful, touching, tear jerking --> simply awesome!

  • Contrary to what some may think, I don't have a problem with Natalie Maines opinion, as an American she has a right to it but she should have better sense and manners, and respect for the office of POTUS, if not the man who holds it, than to insult him in front of foreigners to get a cheer out of them. In that sense she's no better than Obama going around to all these other countries and constantly apologizing to them for all of America's "mis-deeds".

  • I love music that has a harmony vocal, like the Eagles old songs and like this one. A shame you never hear music like this on the radio any more.

  • Not patch on the Brennanan sisters version. Check it out'

  • Awesome!

  • nice outfit

    patty

  • anyone - and by anyone, i mean needafix14, who needs to refer to a woman's mouth as a cock holster has deep seeded issues with their own sexuality...

  • @theOGangelpie agreed

  • We went to war against a non-agressor country and are still debating whether Natalie was wrong to speak out before a foregin audience? Do we really think that the Brits (and everyone else) haven't figured out that we were wrong? That our allegations against Iraq were fabricated? As if anything Natalie said remained relevant in the face of that reality. And don't give me the BS that "it was the best inteligence available." Dick Cheney went to CIA HQ 13 times to edit the intel. WE WERE WRONG

  • While I'll never forgive Maines for being enough of a brainless twit to talk smack about the POTUS in front of a foreign audience, I'll not deny her talent, and this duet with Patty Griffin is just stunningly beautiful.

  • @trailrunner78 your not brainless for having an opinion just brainless for mocking someone because they have one that conflicts yours. you'd be pretty hard pressed to find a person now a days who doesn't think george w wasn't a big damn mistake just like obama.

  • @needafix14 I don't have a problem with her having the opinion she does, she just needs to keep her cock holster shut about it when she's addressing a foreign audience most of whom have nothing good to say about America anyway, because they have no input on how Americans run America, or who we elect.

  • @trailrunner78 LMAO. What a crock of shit. Someone needs to throw away the keys to the backwoods trailer you've locked yourself in. Amurika indeed.

  • @needafix14 -- you should try a remedial course in reading comprehension, trailrunners complaint was that Maines sounded off to a foreign audience not because she didn't agree with him. I guess you missed that.

  • I really like Natalie's great big smile at the end, this video is such a treasure!

  • I love her so much and this song has brought me to inner depths that I treasure

  • Always one of my favourites! Awesome!

  • Beauty personified.

  • awesome

  • Oh wow! Wish I had of seen this sooner. Love it! Patty Griffin sure can sing and, Natalie Maines harmonys are perftection. Thanks for posting.

  • The realmensa.. .. that dude should be arrested for stalking.. what a loser.

  • thats the weakes comeback I have ever read.did your mother help you with that? mentally ill asshole.. you are weak.. very weak.

  • I just laugh at the fucking losers who criticize Natalies tuning LOL.. and harmony with Patty on this.. you are some really sad peeps.. this is real.. and real doesnt have a soundset.

  • @Therealmensa fuck mensa.. pestering against Maines for years.. REALLY pathetic.. and Im sure Patty would knock the teeth out of your mouth asshole.

  • @Therealmensa guess I have to just say it again... MENSA. a multiyear attack on Natalie Maines makes you either a paid employee or mentally ill.. which is it.

  • @ricebiscuit Guess I have to jsut say it again...Ricebiscuit. A multiyear stalk on youtube makes you either mentally ill or.... well that's about all it could be. Get out of your cups and see some sunshine, dufus!

  • LOVE Love love this song!!!

  • Patty And The Executives..high school band..saw her in a local bar near her home town Old Town..ohhh 1970-73ish... Benjamins on Franklin Street...Bangor Maine..tiny little redheaded girl

  • This song tears my heart out

  • Hhf

  • it was on the end of of a house episode i searched and searched and finanlly found it beautiful

  • Look at Patty's smile at 2:54 :)

Natalie surprised her with how adeptly she chimed in there, that's why we call it sweet harmony.

  • @jonnytx Thank you - I missed that and it was worth seeing.

  • Griffin seems exhausted and her phrasing suffers as a result. Maines' voice, however, pulls something powerful from this song even though there are better treatments of the lyrics in Griffin's repertoir.

  • I really don't know what you are talking about. seems exhausted? Her phrasing and expression are perfect. This is high art....

  • If you like Patty, check out FERA music

  • Beautiful music, wonderfully performed by two of my favourite artistes.

  • I am bawling now.

  • @tronnotronno

I'm sorry, but simply put, you're incorrect. While Natalie Maines may (or may not) be "frequently out of tune", she is not on this performance. And if you watch and listen to her, she has the singer's sense to defer to the singer/songwriter when in her presence. Her vocals are delicate when necessary, strong when called for, and always responsive to Patty Griffin's. And never out of tune. It's a lovely, lovely rendition of a wonderful song.

  • @modean52 agree with you. Might I suggest tronnotronno get ears checked.

  • I am crying now, so beautiful.

  • Beautiful! Just like my Roses. Wonderful upload! ~ Jerry

  • Absolute perfection!

  • Absolute perfection!

  • I was at the show at the Austin Music Hall. We all have Willie to thank for this little piece of magic.

  • Two amazing beautiful women Goddesses singing an amazing beautiful song!!!! Thanks y'all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Beautifull. She must be Irish.

  • @tronnotronno

The superlatives are for the most amazing duet of all times. I have both the Tsunami album (featuring the duet) and Flaming Red. I am a stone-cold Patty Griffin fan, but I will say that this duet is the best rendition of this song I've heard. I've heard it with Emily Lou and Shawn Colvin (who was incredibly off-key, due to a cold)...This is exquisite!

  • I often find myself singing this song along the day! a great performance this is!

  • Flaming Red is one of the best albums I have ever heard, I saw Patty at the Warfield in SF and it was an amazing show...I have loved her music every since, a true artist is hard to find and she an artist with everything she is...I get the chills when I hear this song.

  • I love Patty... She has an angel's voice. Thank you so much for posting this. The is a most incredible duet. Patty's and Nat's voices blend so perfectly...!! Just wish I could see the 2 of them perform this live..!!! Patty Griffin is the most under rated singer, songwriter I know... Hopefully we can get her music out there so she can get the recognition she deserves..

  • I first became aware of this song through the Lucinda Wiliams Artist's Choice CD. I love this song and probably as intended, went out and bought Flaming Red by Griffin. I've added her to my list of favorite writers. What a treat this video is. Thanks for posting it.

  • nat cat is a bit flat in the beginning

  • love her.. miss you.

  • She has explained in concert that this is a song about her grandmother. Mid way through the song, my daughter turns to me and whispers, "You know you had a grandmother named Mary.........and she lost a son too."

    Then I lost it.

  • i dunno how this happens.... pure tallent like this is over shadow by pure trash ... lady gaga ... brittney spears... ext ext.... good music should be rewarded.... not the otehr way around

  • @BalisticSound

Absolutely right. Proof that there are a lot of people with no taste.

  • perfection!!

  • How come I had never heard Patty Griffin until now? god, that sweet voice.

  • All I can say is WOW.

  • On the off chance a listener or two doesn't know

"You greet another son, you lose another one

on some sunny day and always stay

    Mary, Mary, Mary..."

"Another son" - refers of course to (don't mean to get holy holy on you here!) John 19:26-27

When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

  • @Awaitingcertainty Just so you understand, this is not a song about Jesus. This is a song that pays homage to Mary, and to all mothers who are generally relegated to "cleaning up the place." Hence, the title of the song. By Patty's own admission, she is not a religious person. She is simply an amazing observer and an incredible poet.

  • @JanuarySubaru Fear not, I'm not a simple Jesus Freak! I love the line about "cleaning up the place..." But I wouldn't limit the song, if you don't mind my suggestion. That's its beauty - I don't think either of us is right to limit it. Who knows what powers one accesses when hearing it? What does "religious" mean? If it means a zombie "believe whatever I'm told" without experience, no one wants to be that. But I wouldn't say she hasn't been touched by grace.

  • Two of my favorite voices together - goosebumps !

  • speechless

  • Such a beautiful and prophetic song. A great song about mothers and sons and women and men in general. What a great line, "Mary stays behind and cleans up the place". She did and women do in general.

Those listening hope you realize that it was a totally impromptu performance together. They did such a fantastic job of it and sounded so beautiful and natural at it. Like they had been practicing that for awhile.

  • The tears just keep coming

  • Chills !!!

  • This was the first song I ever heard of Patty's. It stopped me in my tracks!

  • JanuarySubaru - you couldn't have said it better. Patty is a goddess!

  • Simply beautiful.

  • Saw Emmy Lou and Shawn Colvin join her on this one this past Monday in Austin. Love love love this song.

  • More please!

  • Patti Griffin is one of the best song-writers around and Natalie is the best singer around so this is a great pairing.

  • wow this is the most beautiful song ever i love it and patty griffin is amazing!!!!!!! and so is natalie maines the sound great together!!!!!!!!

  • This is So Beautiful.

    From lyrics to vocals.

Another favorite for me here :)

  • Que música linda!. Que belo dueto, entre a Patty Griffin e a Natalie Maines. Sensacional....

  • Patty Griffin wrote several of my favorite Dixie Chicks songs...ck out "Top of the World"

  • Check out Joan Baez's cover of this song sometime. She does it justice.

  • You guys notice how she holds the tempo, while singing, even while the percussion player is speeding up the tempo?....She is steady and reels him back in.

  • Sons of Anarchy played this song at a very dramatic scene and combined with the music it was very powerful. My daughter heard Rain on Bones and told me to get it . Now I can't quit listening to her music. She is an awesome artist.

  • @5WDFREE Yeah i heard it in Sons of anarchy and i just cried so hard, it was deeply heartrending... this song is really beautiful

  • I can't quit listening to her. She is my new favorite artist.

  • Wonderful recording and filming and everything is perfect. Its my favorite song of hers and i cried like a baby when I saw her play it live hehe But ya in the next month I will put the treasure recording I have of the song with her and Emmylou on here. To be honest the 1 i have is better but with you having yours filmed live then no they are about even. I will let you know when I do and I will be curious if you agree and thanks so much for yours.

  • One of my favorites of Patty's, I agree that it's enough to make you get religion. The Dixie Chicks have covered at least two of her songs with great success, I'm sure Natalie is a huge fan.

  • A beautiful and moving songs. Natalie's accompanyment is so tactful. Always right there with the harmony, never stealing the show.

  • the lyrics are truly breathtaking and lovely. i LOVE the "Mary, you're covered in..." parts. but i also love the "Jesus said, Mother, I couldn't stay another day longer..." parts! Lordy, this song can make you religious even if you've never been. :)

  • Genius!

  • Patty Griffin is amazing musician :) She writes great song :)

  • This song made the Sons of Anarchy scene one of the best scenes ever on tv!

  • Oh my goodness....it doesn't get better than this.

  • ditto

  • this song is a stunner. the lyrics, her voice, all of it. just breathtaking.

  • @lorraineutube

If you get the chance, get the album, it frames the song a lot better, I think. There is such a haunting nature to it when it doesn't have this feel, tho this has its own greatness, too.

  • i have all of patty's albums. i know what you mean.

  • First heard this song on Sons of Anarchy and can't get it out of my head.

  • Well, here it is: a month later, and I am replaying once again. I would say that I've come back to it about 100 times...seriously. And, each time I come back, I am transfixed by the beauty of the lyrics, the beauty of Patty's voice, the exquisite beauty of the harmony that Natalie brings. This needs to be on some accessible media. I want to hear it whenever I want, wherever I want. I'm 59 y.o., and I've been in love with music for most of those years. This is one of the most extraordinary.

  • excellent!

  • Patty, you do my soul good.

  • This is, without doubt, one of the most amazing combinations of vocal excellence and lyrical beauty. I have bookmarked it so that, when in need of sustenance for the soul, it is right at hand. Patty Griffin is an extraordinary songwriter, poet, and singer. Natalie Maines is, well, Natalie Maines. This is an absolute show-stopping winner.

  • I agree 1 trillion %.

  • @JanuarySubaru well said

  • @JanuarySubaru I agree,my step dad and i really connected on this song, and now he is trying to leave us do to brain cancer.Fucking cancer(sorry) but this song has always brought us to a place wher our hearts touched...I sent this to him tonight, cause he LOVES this song......

  • @JanuarySubaru Here it is: more than a year since I left my comment. Know what? I was right! This is still stunning and I only wish I had been there to witness this amazing collaboration. Takes me to my knees!

  • Goosebumps.....so beautiful....

  • Like so many others here, I'd never heard this song before the SOA episode, which had me in tears. Such a beautiful song for an amazing, heart-wrenching scene. Will definitely be looking for more music by this artist.

  • What a beautiful, moving song...I hope they come out with a SOA soundtrack...like a few others here, I heard this song for the first time on SOA.

That last scene with Gemma making her confession to Jax and Clay was so sad..

  • Whoever casts the music for SOA knows how to pick the PERFECT song for any scene! Not only does SOA have the best cast Ive ever witnessed in ANY show, it by far, has the best music of any show I've witnessed too.

  • If they didn't get the licenses to the songs for DVD distribution someone needs to get kicked in the seat of the pants...

  • it is available on dvd lincolnfstern.........start looking

  • Season 1, yes. Season 2, not yet. But my point was that they better have secured audio rights to the music, because it would suck to see SOA with the music changed removed like what happened to WKRP.

  • i think most modern shows learned their lesson about this a long time ago, knowing the big business that dvds can bring. i think this issue exists almost solely with "oldies" that were popular before the dvd format, where producers never thought it would be possible to release an entire collection of a show.

  • @LincolnFStern that is what i am saying. the producers learned their lesson, and i'm sure that most shows are produced with future dvd releases in mind to rake in more cash (you see, even horrible shows that don't last one season are now released on dvd). so when they secure the rights to music, i'm sure there's fine print that secures the music for future dvd releases, which wouldn't have been the case for a show like WKRP.

  • lincoln what i meant to say is that patty performing that song with natalie is from a tsunami relief concert that willie nelson organized, which is available on dvd. i didn't realize everyone was talking about a tv program.

  • @guitardds thats where i heard this song for the first time and you are very right the SOA series is amazing, filled with an amazing cast and music and a great story. :)

  • @guitardds Brother/sister, I know exactly the scene/sequence you're talking about for this song. It was one of the most gripping theatrical performances I've ever experienced ... because of the song, the texture, the subject matter of the scene, the entire fabric of what I was watching and hearing and feeling. That scene and this song introduced me to Patti Griffin. I'll never forget it.

  • @guitardds Having just watched that scene, I have to differ. Not only was the acting some of the most wooden I've ever seen, I thought the script was just lame. Are we really supposed to care about these people? any of them?? These are supposed to be 'hard' people, right? But she just reported she'd been raped. On what planet was that believable?

The Shield, The Wire, Smith, Kill Point, Damages, The West Wing - that's quality drama. SOA is trailer trash fetish TV.

  • @G58 You obviously didn't watch the show from the beginning, or at least the entire second season. You don't understand the characters and that's why you don't understand the scene. The acting in that scene is perfect and it matches the characters. Kurt Sutter (SOA creator) was a writer and a producer for The Shield, so I suppose The Shield is "trailer trash fetish tv" as well. And btw, Katey Sagal won a golden globe for that "wooden acting". You're an idiot.

  • @ytubeserb No, I didn't & I wouldn't/couldn't watch more than half an episode. It's garbage. What a simplistic response to suggest I would classify 'The Shield' as "trailer trash fetish tv" Just because Kurt Sutter was a writer & a producer [& director] on it. That role doesn't qualify him to produce a great drama - & he clearly hasn't here. Shawn Ryan created 'The Shield' which was in an entirely different league. The viewer was actually engaged with genuine characters not wooden targets.

  • @G58 Wow, judging a show by watching half an episode, without knowing characters at all. By that logic, I should think that The Wire is a boring piece of shit because the pilot was nothing special? The fact that you didn't see that Gemma was raped in episode 1 but told Clay and Jax in episode 10 tells me you don't understand that scene at all. You don't know why she didn't tell them before, you don't know how she took it before, you don't know anything. Critique is not your thing

  • @ytubeserb I don't need to know the characters. No respected pundits on arts shows were talking about SOA, so I sought it out myself. What I found was one dimensional crap of the lowest quality. The cop hanging around like an afternoon soap extra was enough to warn me, but when she said she'd been raped, I didn't believe her, why? Because she was utterly wooden. No, that's not a tough person being stoic, that's just bad acting. The whole scene stank so bad I could smell it this side of the pond.

  • Had to run for the kleenex after the SOA seen.

  • Man that was a great scene.

    Best episode this season.

Jax took his tags without Clay seeing him, I wonder if he'll be back with the MC?

  • I had never heard this song before last night's SOA episode. I searched on the lyrics found and bought it... great song and great find by the writers/producers of the show. Very well done.

  • i gotta say this scene on SOA moved me deeply

  • Sons of Anarchy 2x10... great scene great song

  • Like a lot of other people, I heard this song for the first time on SOA-which I just discovered in the middle of this season. This episode and the acting by everyone in the scene where this song played just left me stunned. Amazing, beautiful, crushing, raw, incredible. Why have I never heard this song before? I mean, I'm a Jew and I think this song is just beautiful and wonderful. SOA is a great show, and this woman-Patty Griffin, is an amazing talent. Wow.

  • This is a tear jerker....awesome voice and lyrics...perfect for the last scenes of SOA....(sniff)..

  • SOA!!1 this song was beautiful , me as a 20 year old guy found myself near bawling ath the scene :D

  • Like so many other commenters here, I ended up here after watching SoA, and like others, found myself reaching for the tissues even on the third re-viewing. It's a powerful scene, made even more so as you gain familiarity with this wonderful song. I'm heartened to see that this is a shared experience.

  • SOA FOR LIFE!!!

  • omg this song and show SOA kills my soul!! when is the sound terack coming!!

  • when it came on and Gemma was telling Jax and Clay what happened... OMG! Tears were a-flowin' This song is like, Gemma's theme song.

  • Patty the Poetess. How this song moves me.

  • damn, how much more i could looking for this, but i found i i'm happy :) SOA rules.

  • she sings Up to the mountain...a very beautiful song. SOA led me here...didn't realize she sang this song too. It is a beautiful song perfect for the final scene of SOA on Tuesday...don't ya just love Katey Sagal!!!

  • samcro lead me here. this song is awesome and went beautifully with the end of the show. sons is the best show on tv ever.!!!! almost got choked up when it was playin.

  • My old lady thinks i'm crazy for watching Sons last night 4 times & crying every time, they could not have chosen a better song for the last 5 mins. last night... By far Sons is the best show on TV since the 3rd. year of the Sopranos!!!!!

  • SOA is the best show ever, and this song is incredible.

  • One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. This song & God Only Knows are now my two favorite songs.

  • I heard this on SOA last night too and I KNEW it was Patty Griffin! I love her but I have never heard this song before. It was absolutely perfect in the final scenes of SOA. Made me cry

  • SOA all the way

  • A very beautiful and moving song. Was great on SOA

  • Absolutely!

Can't wait o see the next episode...

  • This song definitely brings tears to my eyes thinking about last nights episode. Best one yet.

  • wow that was an incredible scene last night on SoA with that song..man tears running down my face..

  • I thought I was the only one with tears - beautiful song

  • Yeah, me too. Man tears.
