I think my favorite ever is Ronin.. there's just something about racing through European streets! I tried to use this style in my short film The Handover, but I think I'll hit the tighter dowtown streets in the sequel.
Ummm Matrix Highway Chase was by far, the greatest 10 minutes in cinema history ever. Yeah the movie sucked, we know, get it over, doesn't make the chase any less epic.
hey guys just a thought , and Im old - I saw bullet at the drive in but how bout props totranspoter opening scene, I watch it over and over it gets better each time. Just a thought, Im just sayn.
ok do i guess the classics are not good enough for them. well there young anyways so i guess i cant blame them. the best chases are the older movie chases, the movies were the chase would last for four minutes and not 20seconds. i know two good movies that are better then these, two bad i cant remember the names =/. first: this movie is nothing but a chase, the movie were a truck driver gets road rage and you rever see his face, and the second movie were the chase lasted for 15 minutes.
Gone in 60 seconds? Come on!!!! And The Dark Knight car chase? Okay I' have nothing against that movie, but if they say that for a truck flip thats is one of the best car chase scene, than what about the first Transformers movie? Camera goes under the trucks, bus is blown into two pieces? And what about the Casino Royale airport car chase?
These guys must be twenty five years old. Too many ommisions to count that must have been before these donut-heads were born. Of course they mention Bullit, but probably only because someone tapped them on the shoudler and told them about it so they'd put it in there.
Matrix reloaded car chase in my opinion is absolute cg trash. Too much slow motion. They shoud have included the bank robber car chase from the movie " THE HIDDEN."
@PurpleCashew The Batman chase was very intelligent. Also no CGI, even the semi 180 flip. I'm thinking which Bond flick had a good chase. There were certain parts in Goldfinger and OHMSS. Diamonds had a hoaky scene. Other than those I can't remember. I'm glad they gave mucho respect to Bullitt though. Still the coolest of all time.
@Tabish29 Tomorrow Never Dies car chase is awesome!! Also the Goldeneye Tank Chase I think is my all time favourite, the most indestructable man, in the most indstructable vehicle. Couldn't think of anything better
This list fails, The original Italian job car chase with the mini's? Possibly the second most famous car chase in a film of all time, (after Bullitt). Batman makes it onto this list because of a flipping truck!?! Oh aye, 'cos a turned-over truck makes a good CAR chase...
That list sucks! Best car chase was not even listed! The original Gone in 60 Seconds! It was 40 minutes long and they used one car! Also missing is The Italian Job, The Kingdom, Dukes of Hazard, Just about all the Terminator films, No Mans Land, The Transporter, Transformers... Not saying that they all should have been on the list, but come on, Batman?! They must not be car guys at all!
Oops.sorry for the double post.I didnt mean to.The Lag Monster got me!!!!!!!
Oh,and just cos we love the older car chases,..with real people n REAL cars,..doesnt mean we are old farts,..it just means we've been seduced by realism..Sigh,..a REAL man behind a REAL steering wheel.Yummm,..and again, did I say this was one of those Unfair comments? Yup,it is! McQueen just rocks it! Who doesnt think so?Only the single one I found on Youtube so far.And I let her know she was an odd one out.
Thank God you added Steve McQueens Bullitt car chase.Id have thought you mental if it wasnt there. You can actually FEEL your belly do flips as you watch that chase, even on youtube videos!! GET IT,STEVE!! WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And CGI shouldnt count cos the actors didnt do anything but sit in a car in front of a blue screen.Steve did his own stunts, baby.Did any of those others? I think not. :) Oh,I must add that To Live n Die in LA was the second best car chase in the world.
Thank God you added Steve McQueens Bullitt car chasew.Id have thought oyu mental if it wasnt there. You can actually FEEL your belly do flips as you watch that chase, even on youtube videos!! GET IT,STEVE!! WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just because ONE influential film buff once said the Bullet chase was the best, everybody says the same because they don't want to look stupid.
Many are better. Ronin, every one from the Bourne films, Bad Boys 2...
Clearly, The original Italian Job beats them all hands down.
But you won't see that in a Top Ten list, because all of these lists are made by Americans, and they'd never put a British film, staring British Actors, driving British cars above one from America.
That was a bad list, the gone in 60 seconds was the worst of the 3 made so far. Also, a ton of the 1970s car chases that were amazing were not in there sadly.
This whole list is discredited at exactly the point when they name that choppy, over-edited, shaky, unwatchable piece of crap car chase scene from that equally awful Bourne movie. SPITOO (that's me spitting in disgust upon this list).
You obviously don't understand film making; because many respected critics completely disagree with you.
Do you think the camera is shaky by accident? Or the Editing is quick and choppy because the Editor lacks experience?
You are an idiot. Next time you watch a film, I suggest you watch it properly.
Try interpreting the shaky camera and choppy editing as a way of conveying the reality of such a car chase. Or would you prefer they used a steadicam and cross-dissolves?
@levijonessheep Of course I don't think the choppy camera work is by accident, That's the problem. Is that suppose to be a defensive retort?
And how, good sir, do you suggest I "watch a movie properly.."? Do you imagine I watched it while riding a bike in a hail storm? I sat in the theater and watched it you dolt, what kind of statement is that?
Defensive retort? No. I'm just defending a well made action sequence because some misinformed little twat doesn't understand cinematography but likes to write shit!
Oh, and asking how you're supposed to watch a film! Are you serious? Instead of just watching what's on screen, try watching what's not on screen; then you might begin to not only understand film better, but leave the theatre feeling a little more fulfilled.
Watch what's not on screen. Not that you'll understand this!
@levijonessheep Well, it's far from well made, but it's obvious we'll only disagree on this. But yes, you need to explain "watch what's not on screen" because that could very well be the dumbest thing I've ever seen written on the internet.
Then YOU are obviously the dumbest PERSON on the internet. I'm not even going to attempt to explain it to you, it would take too much effort, and I don't want to waste it on you.
Ask any real film fan, critic, or even a film maker; not that anybody with your lack of comprehension would know anybody working in the industry. They will explain what I mean.
Anyway, on to my point. It's just a lazy way of introducing a frenetic, chaotic pace to an action scene. It is jarring and distracting to have the viewer out of sorts with the action. Paul's over-stylized garbage ruined what started out as a great franchise. You can obtain that same desired effect without strapping a paint mixer to the camera. If you want a good example of chaotic action done properly, without lowering itself to shaky cameras, look at Black Hawk Down.
Black Hawk Down is in a different Genre and made by a different Director who had different techniques and different goals in mind. Comparing these two films just shows how little you know.
I hope you know that in 'The Business' Action scenes in general are considered to be "lazy" as you put it.
They do nothing to move on the film's narrative, nor do they do anything for character development. They are often seen as the Script Writers inability to write a complete script.
Your defense just shows how much of an idiot YOU are. Steadicams? YES, for the love of god yes. Cross-dissolves? Well, that suggestion is so stupid it doesn't warrant a response.
@levijonessheep But's it's unnecessary to shake the camera so much! If I was in an actual car crash I could garner more information than what that chase scene attempted to convey.
YES, I think a steadicam is warranted. You can get that pace just as effectively and not sacrifice clarity. If the stunt work and the actual action that is physically happening on the set was well done, you wouldn't need all that choppy editing and camera shake.
Yes, but you don't seem to understand that it is the Director's style. You, for some reason don't like it, but many more do. The films have won many awards, they are critically acclaimed, and they repeatedly appear in top ten lists, as proven by this video.
@levijonessheep It's obvious that you are a Brit (you called me a plank? wftf?) and you want to defend your British brethren, and that's fine. But try defending your point without all the name calling. And if you are going to resort to name calling, get some better ones..lol.
By that do you mean the American Novel, written by an American author; upon which the American film; produced by an American Production Company was based? Or did you mean the American Director, the American Screenwriter or the American Lead Actor?
Yeah...so you think it was a British Film Trilogy? You keep proving me right, you're an idiot...and a plank!
@levijonessheep I don't want to have to INTERPRET my action sequences as you suggested. I want to feel every punch, every fender slam and I want to have a cohesive picture of the entire scene so I felt like I experienced it instead of someone shaking my head while I try to figure out who's doing what.
A suggestion for you, try shaking your head vigorously while reading this post so you can INTERPRET it in the same fashion as you seem to enjoy your action movies.
Well, it's quite obvious that the use of hand-held cameras is to provide the feeling of being inside the car. That is an interpretation my subconsious did all by itself while I sat and enjoyed the film.
When I said Interpretation, I didn't mean sit there and analyse each scene, you do that subconsciously anyway. You said you wanted to 'feel' everything; well each camera movement, camera choice or editing technique is chosen to convey the reality of that scene.
By the way, there is now a huge push to get back to the basics in action movies, depicting a heightened sense of realism. Most people say that Bullitt is the best car chase of all time. Why? Because it was real. Nobody picks Matrix 2. Why? Because it's fake. Most people say that Jackie Chan vs. Bennie the Jet in Wheels on Meals was one of the greatest fight scenes of all time. Why? Because it was real. Nobody says The Matrix. Why? Because it was fake.
Jackie Chan Vs The Jet in Wheels on Meals was real. Jet took real punches to the face and real kicks to the head. But if it was a total no holds bar fight, Benny would of destroyed Jackie. Bullitt was simple incredible, no silly cgi, just manly men roaring along in Mustangs and Dodges. Matrix? 97% of the movie was cgi, including Keanu's hair.
I like that, it makes perfect sense. But I disagree with Bullet always being named the best car chase. I respect it because it kind of paved the way, showed what could be done; even if they did nearly kill a woman and her baby in the process. But I don't think it is now, or ever was the best, it was just realistic, and therefore, quite boring.
martial arts movies have always been popular. also some of the greatest action films of all time like the matrix or terminator 2 use cgi but don´t overdo it like roland emmerich or michael bay do
No Duel? No Dirty Mary Crazy Larry? And the Charger in Bullit was not a Hemi. It was a 440. How many times do they pass the same cars over and over from different angles? Way too many.
wtf why wud u hav a car chase from the dark knight. gud film but not a best car chase, films like death proof maybe but sorry, n u missed bourne identity and quantum of solace :/
Ronin and Bullit have the best car chases i have ever seen in. Even though they may not be going fast, the long camera shots are just so cool to watch.
The Bourne Sepremacy, eh. Just a lot of frills. It was The Bourne Identity that had the truly awesome car chase. And what about the motorcycle vs. truck chase in T-2? And even T-3 had a phenomenal chase scene.
And Gladiator, really? The car chases in that sucked too.
blah !!!! go for the car chase of DON 2 ,,, far better than any of them

Yes, but you don't seem to understand that it is the Director's style. You, for some reason don't like it, but many more do. The films have won many awards, they are critically acclaimed, and they repeatedly appear in top ten lists, as proven by this video.
levijonessheep 1 year ago
@levijonessheep It's obvious that you are a Brit (you called me a plank? wftf?) and you want to defend your British brethren, and that's fine. But try defending your point without all the name calling. And if you are going to resort to name calling, get some better ones..lol.

@robrov21
My British brethren?

A suggestion for you, try shaking your head vigorously while reading this post so you can INTERPRET it in the same fashion as you seem to enjoy your action movies.
robrov21 1 year ago
@robrov21
Get it...Reality?

Tenacious D's POD car chase was pretty kick ass, so was the song along with the chase. Blues Brothers has to take the cake though as no. 1

I can understand the 2nd Matrix not making it but it is in my opinion one of the most epic car chases ever.

If it has CG in it its not a car chase its a computer chase
stern12 2 years ago 48
you are a fucking moron. cgi is a usefull tool that may be overused by some directors but can be awesome if used right
pyro80 1 year ago
Nope. No real car chase fan thinks CGI is in any way acceptable. Sorry.
ZhuangziZhou 1 year ago 2
who are you to judge who is a fan and not? stupid elitist like you want every movie to have corny effects like in the 60´s.
pyro80 1 year ago
If it's a cartoon it's not a car chase. Sorry.
ZhuangziZhou 1 year ago
By the way, there is now a huge push to get back to the basics in action movies, depicting a heightened sense of realism. Most people say that Bullitt is the best car chase of all time. Why? Because it was real. Nobody picks Matrix 2. Why? Because it's fake. Most people say that Jackie Chan vs. Bennie the Jet in Wheels on Meals was one of the greatest fight scenes of all time. Why? Because it was real. Nobody says The Matrix. Why? Because it was fake.
ZhuangziZhou 1 year ago
Jackie Chan Vs The Jet in Wheels on Meals was real. Jet took real punches to the face and real kicks to the head. But if it was a total no holds bar fight, Benny would of destroyed Jackie. Bullitt was simple incredible, no silly cgi, just manly men roaring along in Mustangs and Dodges. Matrix? 97% of the movie was cgi, including Keanu's hair.
heyheyscotty 1 year ago
@ZhuangziZhou
I like that, it makes perfect sense. But I disagree with Bullet always being named the best car chase. I respect it because it kind of paved the way, showed what could be done; even if they did nearly kill a woman and her baby in the process. But I don't think it is now, or ever was the best, it was just realistic, and therefore, quite boring.
levijonessheep 1 year ago
The growing cry for realism explains why Tony Jaa is so popular. No CGI and no wires.
ZhuangziZhou 1 year ago
martial arts movies have always been popular. also some of the greatest action films of all time like the matrix or terminator 2 use cgi but don´t overdo it like roland emmerich or michael bay do
pyro80 1 year ago
@stern12 i agree but they still look good. vp and bullit nog cgi
phillipskid32 1 year ago
No Duel? No Dirty Mary Crazy Larry? And the Charger in Bullit was not a Hemi. It was a 440. How many times do they pass the same cars over and over from different angles? Way too many.

Ronin and Bullit have the best car chases i have ever seen in. Even though they may not be going fast, the long camera shots are just so cool to watch.

transformers had a sick car chase scene lol
jhcash1 2 years ago
The Bourne Sepremacy, eh. Just a lot of frills. It was The Bourne Identity that had the truly awesome car chase. And what about the motorcycle vs. truck chase in T-2? And even T-3 had a phenomenal chase scene.
And Gladiator, really? The car chases in that sucked too.
mjr256 2 years ago
and the bourne ultimatum had a better car chase scene
