@hipepleful You know Glen Gould said Mozart died too late rather than too soon. He never liked the later mozart who left salzburg. The Vienna Mozart you know
@skrattkantarellen Yes i felt the same. he didnt like the later mozart and may be was forced by the music labels to play mozart. But Glenn is best known for his interpretations of Bach and he played Bach like no other
depends who's playing it, when I play classical/baroque to me it's just a bunch of notes, when I play a romantic (Debussy, Scriabin, etc) the passion and true feeling of the music comes out.
They had to write this music down for to be preserved. No recording devices in Mozart's day. I know there are gifted people who play and sing music without reading it. But in order to be well rounded one should learn to read music.
@jakevanfan Yes, absolutely. In fact, funny enough, it's actually harder to read music and learn it without having listening to it, than to play by ear without music. Playing by ear is really not that had. :P
@haidisemirychan This is an interpreted version of Mozart's piano sonata, my friend. :-) If this were played on a 18th century piano, then the results would be less rewarding as in those days, Pianos were not as sophisticated. It was not until the late 19th century the Pianos were further romanticised and thus they also included a lighter touch. Hence, this piece was played on the latter piano producing a romantic sound, rather than a more obscure one.
belzondium: u misinterpreted, lynnakramer was just saying that he played the music without passion, not that the music itself was without passion. Although I dont know how you can tell because you need to see the person playing; this is just a recording of the music, not a recording of the person playing the music :)
I really do love this piece though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love the cadence at the end of each variation. It is such a powerful harmony that it deserves to be repeated. It is like it says your pitiful wars and scruples are nothing compared to the power of the human spirit. Man, I hope that wasn't corny, haha.
I love this piece. This was my baby boy's favorite lullaby that played his little mobile. I miss seeing the inquisitive he got on his face as it spun around, memorizing him.
I love you Riley - please wait for me up in heaven.
This sonata can be ear in the movie "Four minutes" a film by Chris Kraus. I love this sonata. You should see the movie, it's the story of an aging German piano teacher who finds a young genius pupil incarcerated in the women's prison. Good movie!
well Geupel... That was Mozart's story... He's had a drinking problem. He lived a poor life. On the other hand, he had to write joyfull pieces for the emperor of Austria. At that time, you had to put aside your emotion when it was about music. Beethoven was one of the first and probably the greatest compositor of music in which he'd includ his emotion... Romantic era... Beethoven was someone deeply sad... it's when he became deaf that he wrote his best sad pieces... Anyway that's not the point.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
He was not the first. Haydn in my opinion, is emotional (sometimes superficial), and Baroque composers are emotional (but not very emotional). Most classical era composers are superficial and unemotional though.
@belzondium A person who says Mozart's music is not passionate is not a musician in any sense. They can be the great performer of any instrument - but if they refuse to recognize the genius of ANY master composer (Mozart included - but not just Mozart) they automatically lose credibility.
This is such an achingly beautiful piece. It's like it is telling the story of a person who is trying to hide a terrible, traumatic secret, but it is so painful that he is unable to. So sweet and eerie at the same time.

Esta sonata es una de las cimas del arte mozartiano. Hermosa interpretación de un músico completo como lo es Eschenbach, a quien admiro mucho por su enorme carrera como pianista y director.
LOL LPCLASSICAL, that's exactly the reason I found this version too. I listened to Gould's version, then I immediately searched for another version and found this one.
