Right on. In Flames has always been a group effort, so Jesper is as much to "blame" as anyone else in the band for their direction. I believe Bjorn himself once said that Colony is where In Flames truly started, when Peter and Daniel joined.

And as for the fate of In Flames now that Jesper's gone...well, I hardly think people should write them off so easily just because the founder has left. Bjorn's song "New Beginnings" is a good indicator that they haven't forgotten their roots, for example.
