Good video. There is also another option for replacing the seal that costs about $3.00 at about any major home improvement store. You can buy a new fill valve cap with a new seal already installed. Since everything in the fill valve is plastic you might as well splurge and spend the extra 50 cents.
After you are done fixing your toilet remember that the reactions are priceless when you can look somebody in the eye and tell them, "My ballcock was leaking and I had to get it fixed." =)
all looks too easy, remember one thing, all parts are made from plastic and plastic breaks, so make sure you have spare parts on hand , as a plumber I would not use fluidmaster product again, why, because how do you justify a 1hour bill when the unit fails to turn off, I have had this problem a few times no simple explanation the inlet valve stem comes in 2 parts with a 2 O ring seal more problems giveme the good old fowler or daulton one piece sexy fingers plumbing services
@jhenry1041 I never knew that people had such appreciation for toilets. Not to offend the Standard fans, but I prefer the new Toto to the Cadet. I think the average height in the US was a lot shorter in the 60s- the seat was pretty tiny. On the other hand, the Toto's flush lever was poorly made- I've already replaced it after less than 3 months!
@jhenry1041 It's a one bedroom, one bathroom apartment. I don't know anything about toilets, so it's been interesting to find out that there are toilet connoisseurs.
wow thats sad if you would like an old standard toilet you can check your local craigslist for an old cadet toilet like this one just tipe in the search box toilet, american standard toilet, toilets.ok if you want one do that ok.
@starlitetonight Wow, that toilet is older than me. The Standard began to clog recently so my landlady replaced it with a Toto, even though I suspected the problem was somewhere down the line. The new Toto ended up clogging as well, so the plumbers were called again and they found some plastic obstructing the pipes down near the city line. Seemed like a real waste.
Coming from a FLUIDMASTER TECH SERVICE REP, living in California, I appreciate the fact you used an IN-N-OUT cup to flush your fill valve. Well Done!!
I feel like I owe you $90 bucks. Awesome video. I'm inspired to share small things I've figured out how to do on youtube also. The world could be such a better place if we all helped fix each other's toilets and such.
@0wtf I'm glad it was helpful, and that you saved yourself a trip from the plumber! It would be great if you posted some how to vids- seems like a real waste that instead of spending a couple bucks and a few minutes repairing things, that most of us just trash everything. I'll keep an eye out for your vids. ;)
BRAVO! I searched about a dozen videos trying to find one that would simply show how to remove the fill valve cover and replace the seal. Yours was the only one that explained it clearly. Thank you! Now I can flush again! And your taste in music is fantastic. It made for a very pleasant experience while working on the toilet.
@hansontm No problem- I'm pleased that you were able to get your toilet working again! I also unsuccessfully searched youtube for seal change instructions. About the music: I felt vaguely guilty about using symphony 5 as background music for a video about repairing a toilet, but I thought it would be a funny combination. I'm glad that you enjoyed it. :)
I cannot imagine what would possess a person to produce such a video, but thank you so much! It was exactly what I needed to save the day (and thanks for the LV B)
@greentree4517 I'm glad it was useful! I was compelled by a combination of boredom, and gratitude for all the surprisingly helpful 'how to' videos on youtube.

@ignite2excite Thanks for the warning and expert advice- I should have mentioned the fragility of the parts in the video.

Perfect. This video saved me a warranty service fee of $60.00. All I had to do was clean off the seal and reinstall.

@dthomas2237 Thank you! The official fluidmaster instructions illustrate the flushing process with a tea cup, but I'm not that fancy. ;)
