This show was typical crappola ITV fare. The only thing I can remember about it other than the crap robot thing was Irene Handl was in it. What was she doing associating herself with such bilge as this.
Could Metal Mickey's voice be used for a Cyberman's voice (original or Cybus Industries version)? Also, what would happen if Doctor Who met Metal Mickey?
For its time in sedate British society and television, Metal Mickey must have been really something exciting for children. My own memories were vague as was only eight when I first watched/heard of it - As an adult, I have this on DVD and can't quite believe how funny it is! - May not be to the serious SCI-FI fan, but you can't compare it to 21st C TV and appropriate for the time it was made. I now have a high appreciation of this cute robot.
This was on the 'other side'. I was a snob and i only watched the BBC. I may have been right because this show was fucking awful. I was written by I think by the singer out of the Monkeys.
Metal Mickey was last seen on the street, on its back, covered in graffiti, and stripped of most of it';s components in a vad neighborhood. All it could say was bsbsbsbxbsbxbxb
I notice this episode is called Pantomickey, which isn't from season 1 or 2. Was this recorded from the TV? Or (I ask with bated breath) is the 3rd DVD now available? I've been desperately looking on Amazon, and in HMV, for ages; I'm so impatient for more!
I think I remember Pantomickey; Janey was the principal boy, and Ken the principal girl! Haley (my favourite) was a fairy godmother.
I loved this when I was a tot, and every Saturday night I looked forward to seeing this. I remember one episode where there was a female robot and when she kissed Metal Mickey, she blew up. That scared me back then. I laugh about it now.
I often wonder what would happen if a Dalek was involved, possibly exterminated Metal Mickey and Irene Handel. Actually when I was 11, I used to find it quite good.
Does anyone have the hardware specifications for this robot?
I'm guessing low spec and easily interfered with - that is to say crudely re-programmable with possbley amusing results. Re-wiring Mickey's mobo and updating the firmware would have made an interesting episode
when i are 15 i has builded a metal mickie with basic functions eg movement, speech and haved some aventure, however electrickity buills and legal actions involveing robot which causeds some death(4) have make maintainence un-tennable & in exhange for subsidys i alow german govermnent to aquire
What a show. I really liked this program when it was on in the 80s (i think) I just remember it. I think it was shown on ABC TV (Australia) in the afternoon. Thats when TV was good. There were alot of good stuff on in the 80s. Not anymore which is sad.
Mickey is only about five foor nine tops so what the fuck was he made of.
What sort of example was that so set to the children? No wonder there is an obesity crisis up here in Glasgow now but that's just atypical of the Thatcherite neo-con two tear welfare system. Never mind the Scottish working class, oh no let's just focus on a stupid wee Bourgeoisie robot encapsulating the myth of a non aspitational society where there is no diversity. Racists
Loved this show when I was a kiddo. Makes me miss those times. Didn't some character in that series have Gip in there knee? Or there knee gave them Gip. Never found out what Gip was?????
I beg to differ - Mickey Dolenz from the Monkees did not fall on hard times. He inherited his Mums business - she invented and patented Tipex!!! That is why he rarely does their reunions - cos he doesn't have too. so I doubt he produced a silly early 80s ITV programme.
He did produce Metal Mickey, and I think he directed it too. Not so sure, but while he was working on Metal Mickey he had to change his name to Michael so they wouldn't get mixed up.
no you're so wrong my friend, it should read Sat night, dark outside, sandwiches and a packet of crisps for tea and crapy metal mickey on the telly. The chip fat smell on a saturday was centered around lunch time on a saturday. Obviously you're not my brother and never even spent any time in my house on a saturday when i was a kid ! So there
LOved those dodgy 80s ZX Spectrum graphics in the titles!! Brings back memories!! The late Irene Handl was in just about everything in those days as well!
Whoda thunk it...was just cruising thru Youtube...et voila - metal mickey. I remeber holding my cassette recorder to the telly to record this very song. And yep - aussies of a certain age...flashbacks from childhood!
I love this kind of stuff. It means SOOOO much to a few million people and ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to the rest of the world. We all have stuff like this. I wonder if people in central Africa get all weird and nostalgic when they hear the theme to Sigmund and the Sea Monsters? Prolly not. But this show does look cool. And I was lucky enough not to grow up in the UK in the 80's.
wow!! what a trip down memory lane that was!! i havent seen this for about 26 years, and for a good reason! i loved it as a kid, only because i had a big imagination and there was only 3 chanels on british tv at the time which showed programs about cheese, or how to maintain shrubs for the garden... really, Tv was dire in them days, not all but most! thank God for "V", Manamal, Thundercats and Battlestar Galatica! sorry Metal Mickey but a Cylon would tear your arm off in an arm wrestle
DominatorMCMLXXVIII - you are absolutely correct in your assumption- it was shite, but being a couch potato id I think I must have watched every episode!
bloody hell i just nearly knocked the laptop off my knee when i saw this what great days these were its a shame they dont make programmes like this anymore, now its all things like the wonder pets and lazy town ect
oh dear, i actually know lola young from metal mickey, she's so lovely. she actually works for the government now. I bet she cringes at this stuff. METAL MICKEY ROCKS.
I would like to know if the original robot stills exists, if so, it should be fully restored so it could raise hell and high water once more on this rather dull televisual landscape we have today. The original TV series should be restored. Stereo mixes could be prepared by the best sound engineers humanly possible The show would then be very enjoyable on our hi-fidelity stereo digital TVs!
