  • This show was typical crappola ITV fare. The only thing I can remember about it other than the crap robot thing was Irene Handl was in it. What was she doing associating herself with such bilge as this.

  • Could Metal Mickey's voice be used for a Cyberman's voice (original or Cybus Industries version)? Also, what would happen if Doctor Who met Metal Mickey?

  • For its time in sedate British society and television, Metal Mickey must have been really something exciting for children. My own memories were vague as was only eight when I first watched/heard of it - As an adult, I have this on DVD and can't quite believe how funny it is! - May not be to the serious SCI-FI fan, but you can't compare it to 21st C TV and appropriate for the time it was made. I now have a high appreciation of this cute robot.

  • oh f**k, the nightmares will return. i was boy raped... by metal mickey, see...

  • I loved Metal Mickey !!!!!

  • But, it did have a secret weapon - Irene Handl, who was properly mental!

  • This was on the 'other side'. I was a snob and i only watched the BBC. I may have been right because this show was fucking awful. I was written by I think by the singer out of the Monkeys.

  • Ah...the 80's...

  • "want to go a wee-wee!"

  • You take that back uploader person!!! Metal mickey was the BEST ^_^

  • EMS Vocoder!!!!

  • I reckon google owe metal mickey royalties for using his image for their android brand.

  • in a fight between metal mickey and dusty bin-who would win?

  • I thought this was great, but then I was (very) young when it was on.

  • used love this showing my age lol

  • "Booogie, Boogie!"

  • The SOFA out acted Irene Handel!

  • I wonder if this was shown in Ireland - over there, Metal Mickey would mean Metal willy!

  • May've been crap, lol, but it brings back weird memories I didn't even know where in there!!??

  • I remember buying atomic thunderbursters in the school tuck shop...they knew what they were doing with the tie ins.

  • Metal mickey got sent to the scrap heap, I presume

  • I'd forgotten how crap this was. A heap of junk in more ways than one

  • Metal Mickey was last seen on the street, on its back, covered in graffiti, and stripped of most of it';s components in a vad neighborhood. All it could say was bsbsbsbxbsbxbxb

  • anyone interested in buying vid copies of robot porn.? i have metal mickey and bertha in a steamy 60min production. £5 ?

  • not many people know that metal mickey had a telescopic cock.

  • the UK version of small wonder?

  • not as bad as Small Wonder, that sucked huge donkey balls

  • Arsenal want him to play in goals

  • The graphics are quite slick for something so old.

  • test

  • Seizure alert!

  • One of my earliest TV memories! :P

  • I can't remember a bloody thing about this show, except the music. Still, good use of a vocoder

  • I notice this episode is called Pantomickey, which isn't from season 1 or 2. Was this recorded from the TV? Or (I ask with bated breath) is the 3rd DVD now available? I've been desperately looking on Amazon, and in HMV, for ages; I'm so impatient for more!

I think I remember Pantomickey; Janey was the principal boy, and Ken the principal girl! Haley (my favourite) was a fairy godmother.

  • I loved this when I was a tot, and every Saturday night I looked forward to seeing this. I remember one episode where there was a female robot and when she kissed Metal Mickey, she blew up. That scared me back then. I laugh about it now.

  • VINNNNYYYY

  • The producer on this show was the drummer from the Monkees!

  • Listen to this, then listen to "underneath the radar" by underworld. Then consider that this was released first...

  • The American's had the rather cool Tweekie from Buck Rogers - and we had......fucking Metal Mickey.

  • Tweekie was annoying too. Gay.

  • Who was fucking Metal Mickey? Irene Handel - it wasn't in the News of the World, was it?

  • I often wonder what would happen if a Dalek was involved, possibly exterminated Metal Mickey and Irene Handel. Actually when I was 11, I used to find it quite good.

  • Oh no!, its that shitty thing again with the big head and chistmas decorations for hair. I'd rather do my sums than watch this crap.

  • Does anyone have the hardware specifications for this robot?

I'm guessing low spec and easily interfered with - that is to say crudely re-programmable with possbley amusing results. Re-wiring Mickey's mobo and updating the firmware would have made an interesting episode

  • when i are 15 i has builded a metal mickie with basic functions eg movement, speech and haved some aventure, however electrickity buills and legal actions involveing robot which causeds some death(4) have make maintainence un-tennable & in exhange for subsidys i alow german govermnent to aquire

  • Very badly done "high tech" robot...annoying kids, over-acting sit-com father and Irene bloody Handel. Pass me the bloody sick bag

  • Irene Handl! Brilliant!

  • its basically r2d2 with few more add ons

  • The show was as bad as this fuckin video quality!

  • i never knew wot a Mortgage was til I saw this lols As kids we were like WTF is a Mortgage!!! XD

  • I feel sick after watching that.

  • only watched it because it preceded buck rodgers

  • Used to love this, makes me cringe watching it now!!!

  • Is that where google got their Android Logo from?

  • This week, Metal Mickey doubles as a trashcan.

same old story rerun every week.

Like the guy before though, i fookin loved it too!

  • i fooking loved this as a kid, loved it

  • What a show. I really liked this program when it was on in the 80s (i think) I just remember it. I think it was shown on ABC TV (Australia) in the afternoon. Thats when TV was good. There were alot of good stuff on in the 80s. Not anymore which is sad.

  • I do remember seeing this show in the late 80s in the arvo, would of been ABC that aired it.

  • "He wieghs half a tonne"!

Mickey is only about five foor nine tops so what the fuck was he made of.

What sort of example was that so set to the children? No wonder there is an obesity crisis up here in Glasgow now but that's just atypical of the Thatcherite neo-con two tear welfare system. Never mind the Scottish working class, oh no let's just focus on a stupid wee Bourgeoisie robot encapsulating the myth of a non aspitational society where there is no diversity. Racists

  • Back tae the bucky shug

  • Top Tune

  • I've got the first 2 DVDs, and am eagerly awaiting the release of the third. It's shocking how the series has been neglected for so many years!

    I always liked Haley best.

  • Great show when I was a kid ,, need to do a techno remix of thes intro song would be a hit!!

  • Epilepsy friendly graphics too!

  • Always a bit sceptical about Metal Mickey, he got a bit tired, so he took 'Atomic Thunderbusters' and then boogie boogie.

We used to do similiar at raves in 1989, and the 'Thunderbusters' costs £10 a pop

  • ha ha ha! Oh good call, sir!!

  • The makeup and special effects are absolutely stunning!

  • I used to love this programme nearly as much as Rentaghost! :-D

  • Metal Mickey v Rentaghost is a very close call!! I wouldn't like to call it!!!! Maybe Rentaghost by a margin......

  • Why not do a remake called Rent a Mickey?

  • my mum used to watch this one

  • I love this. No one writes good themes anymore. Seth Macfarlane does, but that's about it.

  • Boogie boogie!

Remember Metal Mickey released a cover version of Lollipop?

  • "A lot of fun" and "Half--a Ton"....

Sounds like the bird I pulled in Deja-Vu nightclub in Dundee last Saturday!!

    Looks like her as well!!!

  • Superb!

    Well played that man!

  • Comment removed

  • @OneWayClass Well struck Sir!

That comment made the metal mickey theme tune endurable again,.

Yes, I have visited your fine city.

  • @OneWayClass What was her name? LOl I think I know who ya mean!

  • @edinburghmarc I think I know her too! Is her initials P.D.? If so then she's very, erm, 'special'.

  • @pufferfishish LOL Her initial is L.D.

  • @edinburghmarc It's probably her sister!

  • @pufferfishish Ya never know but she has now moved to Edinburgh! LOL

  • @OneWayClass took one for the team. Very brave sir...

  • @OneWayClass your comment genuinely made me laugh

  • @OneWayClass Then you woke up......

  • Liked this show when it was on Australian TV in the 1980s. But they don't show anymore classic 80s shows anymore.

  • Wow! I remember this!!! Brill!

  • Always on just after World of Sport and before other LWT fare like Punchlines and Game for a Laugh. I liked it as a four year old in 1982 anyway...

  • Loved this show when I was a kiddo. Makes me miss those times. Didn't some character in that series have Gip in there knee? Or there knee gave them Gip. Never found out what Gip was?????

  • is it me or was life a whole lot better in the 80`s?

  • no, it was definitely better in the 80's

  • Believe it or not, this show was produced by no less than Mickey Dolenez from 60s superpop group "THE MONKEES"! Talk about flling on hard times...

  • I've met the creator of the series, John Edwards and he's actually a really nice guy!!!

But this was an awesome show from kids eyes in the 80's.

  • I beg to differ - Mickey Dolenz from the Monkees did not fall on hard times. He inherited his Mums business - she invented and patented Tipex!!! That is why he rarely does their reunions - cos he doesn't have too. so I doubt he produced a silly early 80s ITV programme.

  • Err..yes he did produce "METAL MICKEY"..if you don't believe me,go look it up!

  • He did produce Metal Mickey, and I think he directed it too. Not so sure, but while he was working on Metal Mickey he had to change his name to Michael so they wouldn't get mixed up.

    JUDE

    Oh My Dog

  • Ha ha! That's true! There certainly wasn't much acting ability to choose between them!

  • Think you have Micky Dolenz mixed up with Michael Nesmith.

  • we didn't watch this cos it was on ITV and only the people from the council houses watched itv. We had to watch whatever the beeb had on...

  • that's still true today.

  • I remember this fondly, even though I actually hated it at the time!

  • Yikes!!! Don't think my parents had long split up when this was on! Has a strange feeling. Brilliant to see again though.

  • dark, saturday night, dinner time, smell of chip fat,not a great show

  • no you're so wrong my friend, it should read Sat night, dark outside, sandwiches and a packet of crisps for tea and crapy metal mickey on the telly. The chip fat smell on a saturday was centered around lunch time on a saturday. Obviously you're not my brother and never even spent any time in my house on a saturday when i was a kid ! So there

  • Oh man your description is sooo spot on :)

Aye that was ya Sat nite way back then!

  • BOOGIE BOOGIE BOOGIE !!!

  • OMG......Classic of course! I think the 80's was fucking cool...with their BBC Acorn graphics...superb!

  • thanx for posting this clip, I remember coming home from schol in the 80s and watching this classic child programme! memmories.....

  • He sure did!

  • Awesome

  • LOved those dodgy 80s ZX Spectrum graphics in the titles!! Brings back memories!! The late Irene Handl was in just about everything in those days as well!

  • This show was also broadcast in Australia and is extremely nostaglic for the Aussies too !!

Its wierd that shows like Monkey were really for the Commonwealth only ....

  • Whoda thunk it...was just cruising thru Youtube...et voila - metal mickey. I remeber holding my cassette recorder to the telly to record this very song. And yep - aussies of a certain age...flashbacks from childhood!

  • I love this kind of stuff. It means SOOOO much to a few million people and ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to the rest of the world. We all have stuff like this. I wonder if people in central Africa get all weird and nostalgic when they hear the theme to Sigmund and the Sea Monsters? Prolly not. But this show does look cool. And I was lucky enough not to grow up in the UK in the 80's.

  • Noooo not crap!!! Metal Mickey was cool ...lol

  • wow!! what a trip down memory lane that was!! i havent seen this for about 26 years, and for a good reason! i loved it as a kid, only because i had a big imagination and there was only 3 chanels on british tv at the time which showed programs about cheese, or how to maintain shrubs for the garden... really, Tv was dire in them days, not all but most! thank God for "V", Manamal, Thundercats and Battlestar Galatica! sorry Metal Mickey but a Cylon would tear your arm off in an arm wrestle

  • Well at least he's not Twiki!

  • yes he was spider

  • Recognise Gary Shail? he was in quadrophenia

  • Irene Handl was aces. I can't remember much of the shows, but I remember her and getting really upset when she died.

  • Not before my time, and yes it was a load of shite. Even then.

  • Id forgotten just how awful this show was, but it was essential viewing. Irene Handle, pure class.

  • this show was a must see at weekends l so good to see others remember, thanks for pasting it here

  • Before my time (thankfully). Looks like a load of shite to me.

  • DominatorMCMLXXVIII - you are absolutely correct in your assumption- it was shite, but being a couch potato id I think I must have watched every episode!

  • Surley Metal Mickey is long overdue for a CGI heavy big budget hollywood remake.

  • bloody hell i just nearly knocked the laptop off my knee when i saw this what great days these were its a shame they dont make programmes like this anymore, now its all things like the wonder pets and lazy town ect

  • The DVD of series 1 is out this month.

  • I loved Metal mickey! BRING HIM BACK!

  • oh dear, i actually know lola young from metal mickey, she's so lovely. she actually works for the government now. I bet she cringes at this stuff. METAL MICKEY ROCKS.

  • I used to be so scared of metal mickey, i used to cry when the show came on. watching it now i realise i was a scaredy cat!

  • I choked on a metal mickey fizz bomb i bought from the ice cream van for 1p.

  • In 1981 I went to a Purim party dressed as Metal Mickey. Everyone loved my costume (compared to the costumes that the paretn bought in a store).

  • Loved it when i was a kid, probably shit if i watched now but hey!!Irene Handl...legend,& she was in the Italian Job!!!

  • shit i remember this as a kid used to watch it at tea time lol wot a memory thanks!

  • Metal Mickey appeared on another LWT show, 'Game For A Laugh'.

  • I would like to know if the original robot stills exists, if so, it should be fully restored so it could raise hell and high water once more on this rather dull televisual landscape we have today. The original TV series should be restored. Stereo mixes could be prepared by the best sound engineers humanly possible The show would then be very enjoyable on our hi-fidelity stereo digital TVs!

  • He does exist. I know the guy who owns him (they only ever built the one), he's still intact and works perfectly. Just look it up on Google and you can see some recent photos of him.

  • Apparently, he was going to appear in the Life On Mars follow-up Ashes To Ashes, but the deal fell through. Shame.

PS. I read online that only the head of the original prop remains. Not sure if that's true, though.

  • i liked that metal mickey episode when there was an idential robot of him who was a baddie

  • I hated metal mickey after the episode where he rewound time and stopped Dalgliesh scoring a penalty against Spurs.

  • How cheesey can you get.

  • It's crap but it will always have a special place in my heart I know sick buckets ready

  • loved mickey.... and isn't granny so cute

  • she was also in the great comedy series in sickness & in health. mickey dolenz out of the monkees directed the series

  • metal mickey was ace much better than k9 and he could fight the borg. dont be such cunts enjoy

  • When LWT's Metal Mickey started, it was just a few months after K9 left BBC1's Doc Who.

  • i know i was only having a laugh K-9 rules as does dr who, metal mickey is just happy nostalgia

  • When I was little I wanted Metal Mickey to live with me still do I thought I was the only one that remembered him I can't remember a single episode though I remember the words bootface and boogeywoogey I think ohh and the theme song. I wish they'd show them again just so I know they were as good as I remember or maybe a bag of shite just so I know

  • Jesus Christ. Your punctuation is so fucking shit it's hilarious.

  • I loved this Show when I was Kid!!!

    Fuck that idiot below me.

  • good show isnt it sun, u know they chucked the fucker in a skip when the show was cancelled. and the director was Mickey Dolenz from the Monkess. thakyou gorgeous

  • loved the series

  • in retrospect this was rubbish. And yet I used to sit there with my tea of a saturday with baited breah - how easily pleased we were.

  • lol me too.. the shame...

  • and isn't Gary Shail the guy who played Spider in Quadrophenia? I guess that was a career high for him...
