Nice piece of devil's advocacy there. Since Will is a smart guy though, don't you think he would realize straight away if his friend was just hoping to profit from his success? So I think the cynical point of view falls down straight away.
I have always loved this scene. Imagine being Chuckie in this situation. How hard it would be to tell your best friend what he did. Imagine how much balls that would take. Puttig myself in his shoes made me admire this scene so much more. Fantastic film.
This is the best scene in the history of movie making. It is so real and honest. Even though Will is the genius, Chuckie's genius is revealed by his recognition of his best friend's gift and need for a better life. Chuckie is completly unselfisness towards Will. Such honesty is rare or very difficult to articulate
TRANSLATION FOR STUPID PEOPLE: thats a best friend
I always wondered if I had the sack to tell one of my best friends this. It's a tough thing to tell a friend that he/she would be better off out of here. As I've grown older, I thought more and more and realized that If I was Chuckie that it's the right thing to do. He even mentions going on and having some drinks and laughs. Those are some of the best times I've had with my very own friends. But this is the right thing to do. Hats off... What a scene.
In the Ground Work of The Metapyhsics, Immanuel Kant regarded this as a "duty" , a rational being being has. That is the duty to nuture and develop your pre-disposed gifts. Not sure if the writers had that in mid when they wrote this part of the script but its so true. He does owe to himself but he also owes to his fellow man-kind. This was great......
For some reason this scene always reminds me of Stand By Me, when Chris Chambers talks Gordy out of doing shop courses and tells him he's going to be a great writer.
i loved the friendship portrayed between these 2 in the entire movie, especially the bar scene where will comes between chuckie and the blonde haired punk from harvard.
This is the best scene in the history of movie making. It is so real and honest. Even though Will is the genius, Chuckie's genius is revealed by his recognition of his best friend's gift and need for a better life. Chuckie is completly unselfisness towards Will. Such honesty is rare or very difficult to articulate.
@peckamite Will there wasn't a genius only a man with a high intelligence, he was brilliant but genius is far from that, to be genius is to transcend your time, nowadays with all that consumption and marketing; to recognize the talent is rare, there's a stereotype about math genius, but greatness is not only in that field also in many other.
@peckamite All life thrives to gain, apply that logic to this scene. Chuckie is more than likely wanting his best friend to make it rich with this talent, and to end up thanking Chuckie back by giving him a home, or money, etc. If you had a friend that had the potential to earn millions, you'll be the first to push because you can see in the long run him giving you some money for pushing him to be in that position. Its all about gaining.
@peckamite To play Devil's Advocate, it's not about what Chuckie wants. He recognizes Will's gift, but when Will expresses how he wants to get older, that is how he truly feels. That is what he wants. Chuckie being envious of Will's gift doesn't dictate how Will should live his life. If Will envisions his future in what he says and is truly happy with it, then let him do it. He doesn't want to be a "lab rat." Who is Chuckie to say what makes a person happy?
@JCGCINC Um, sorry, but maybe you can enlighten me as to why. Instead of being a ten-year old in the sandbox because I stole your toy truck, give me a little more ironclad evidence as to why my comment is an "epic fail." I can do the same thing to you, "Sorry but your comment is an epic fail." It's easy to say isn't it without putting some thought behind it or as to a reason why. You need a little more meat in your argument. Enroll yourself in remedial courses immediately.
@JCGCINC You don't have to give an example but it would help your point immensely. And I think it is a huge blunder to say my post is an epic fail without you justifying your reasoning. It is so tedious to deal with people like you. This just in! We don't need juries anymore because a judge can just say, "I disagree with you. You don't have to be a math genius to relate to this. FIRST MOVIE ---- OSCAR.... I lived in Boston for 15 years, these guys are simply genius. To put a movie that says so much about Boston, racism, society, class, Harvard, psychology, relationship between man and woman, men and his friends, loyalty, relationship between a father and his son.Harvard is like an Einstein factory, Bill Gates, Obama, Matt D. Wish they made more moveis like this one.

Fuck you man we know how many people disliked the moive and how many of them liked it the stats are there for a fuckin reason. On a different note, brilliant movie.
13 YEARS after this movie first came out I still find it hard to believe those two young guys actually WROTE this excellent movie. It's one of the best screenplays ever. Niether won has EVER been able to replicate anything so brilliant since. And that's the real shame of it all.
@donpazer Ben Affleck did The Town, that wasn't too shabby. Obviously it's not GWH, but I think in terms of creativity, shockingly, it seems that the Affleck brothers are the writers/directors of the bunch. Never would have thought that a few years ago.
@blueballsredhair I was going to say the same thing. Most of Damon's other roles were the gimme's for money. He's holding back in most of those, but here he's got nothing to prove and no expectations to live up to.
This scene/frame is set so well! One friend being honest (true friend) giving advice to another friend! Advice made credible through his own frustrations and struggles. A backdrop of hard labor; which is like an intuition of what they have to look forward too! A moving monologue; all the while tossing back a few! That’s a real day in life!
This movie is a true classic. You get these idiot mathematicians whining about how easy the maths is in this. Fucking idiots, that's not the fucking point of the movie. It's a brilliant, brilliant movie.
@NintendoCapriSun In addition to itself being a great movie, scene for scene it is one of the best. What's another that can match it scene for scene, line for line?
This scene is maybe the best written scene I know about male friendship. Unfortunately, we live in a society where men are devalued in the movies and on television. I think a lot of women would benefit from this scene. I hope and pray that all my friends are successful and I would never be jealous of any one of them.
This movie seems to be contradictory. Earlier on, it seems to be anti-education. Rather than an education, we should all have freedom and originality, living lives the way we want. And later on, it seems to be pro-education, what with this discussion.
@themongboy this discussion isn't promoting education though. it's promoting the notion that people shouldn't waste their natural talents, especially if they're as amazing as will's, and should live to their fullest potential.
@themongboy part of the message in the movie is education isn't really needed to learn something, rather it is needed as a sort of proof to show that you are qualified.would you hire a guy who seems smart or someone who has at least a shred of proof of his intelligent?also, originality; meaning we shouldn't just regurgitate knowledge from books to look smart but actually understand what you are talking about and produce something original from that knowledge and if you have a gift, don't squander
This is what happens when turning on the CC at 01:14:
Yes that's right that's a fact of life. I can't cite-
You've got something- Let's talk about what why is it always is that if I can tell that to myself that- Is that what the Nazis don't know? That's what you some are on the waco compound. Nice to meet him, as I do something, anything, so in the stock you insult the last six seven. Writers block. Tonight. They say what I did every at that we go out at Richard Nixon...
This is one of the BEST scenes in the film, besides those scenes when Robin is talking to him, I don't know why Ben Affleck gets such a bad rap for acting or the roles he plays sometimes. For me, movies like this or State of Play proves he's a great actor, hell he's great especially at the end of the movie Armageddon. Great scene!

This is one of the BEST scenes in the film, besides those scenes when Robin is talking to him, I don't know why Ben Affleck gets such a bad rap for acting or the roles he plays sometimes. For me, movies like this, Dogma, The Town, Hollywoodland, Chasing Amy or State of Play proves he's a great actor. Great scene!
@BraunMachine05 Affleck is killer in this movie but i dont think he has alot of range as an actor and instead of really working on it he just sold out and took alot of money for medium to bad films....no big deal, most actors sell out at some ppoint he just did it early.
@KennedyCorey I think it's more dependent on the director he's working with. His ability as an actor is directly proportional to the ability of the director. That's why he's amazing in this movie and Chasing Amy, but sucks in the Michael Bay movies he did.
@TheAndrewj96 Nuttin wrong with Fbomb if it's in the right context. People talk like that in real life. F word is probably one of the most versatile and expressive word in English in my opinion.
i dedicate this scene to every US born citizen. every illegal immigrant would do anything to have what we have. we ourselves are sittin on a fuckin lottery ticket with the opportunity to get good jobs and go study in universities and we sometimes take it for granted. after watching this i feel i owe it to my family to cash in my own lottery ticket
@gmanunreal Well at least your recognizing it pal..thats the first thing..in anything when you want to get something done..u have to know it..then you begin to go after it..but the majority of the whole freakin world does not know theres something better..they conceive kids..work at job..no future..good thing for yourself you found out..never too late to do something.
Is it me, or is it a little odd that each time Ben takes a drink of his beer he's holding it something like a tea cup--pinkie up? What the...? I love the scene though.
@KevxMeister I hear you, and I've done it a time or two myself. But Matt's not doing it? On a construction site like they are, Ben would be called on it. It's really probably more of a habit than anything else?
I mean that would be a great friend but why would you wish that? I mean to wish that he leaves without saying goodbye. I know goodbye's are tough, but damn it's still your friend.
@notta3d because the unsuccessful friend feels sad his friend might not get anywhere. what do u do to make ur friends listen? its hard to convince people. and that's why he had to say it like that.
@ 2:00 it's sort of like a role reversal, the way Chuckie lectures Will. These two guys deserve every bit of that Oscar they won for writing this movie.

Sillyness: f bombs, drinking beer, smoking, trying to act hard and working class...unrealized potential bullshit...tired lines...the smudges on the face as a metaphor for a working mans' ' a hard days work ' is the final touch of embarrassment that makes this scene contrived and hard to watch.
Now....that is a true friend....feels better when friend is more successful....no jealousy at all....I hope I am that good of a friend...I'm not there yet, but I'm working on it.
I think there is some envy involved. In my case, intellectually (etc.), I am almost as good as my best friend. She is very dear to me and I want her to be happy and reach her full potential, but I do feel a bit envious. She admitted the same to me. So don't worry. Nobody's perfect.
Best acting Affleck has ever done, will ever do.

13 YEARS after this movie first came out I still find it hard to believe those two young guys actually WROTE this excellent movie. It's one of the best screenplays ever. Niether won has EVER been able to replicate anything so brilliant since. And that's the real shame of it all.
donpazer 1 year ago 13
@donpazer Ben Affleck did The Town, that wasn't too shabby. Obviously it's not GWH, but I think in terms of creativity, shockingly, it seems that the Affleck brothers are the writers/directors of the bunch. Never would have thought that a few years ago.
blueballsredhair 11 months ago
@blueballsredhair I was going to say the same thing. Most of Damon's other roles were the gimme's for money. He's holding back in most of those, but here he's got nothing to prove and no expectations to live up to.
kmikl 11 months ago
@donpazer you do know these two actors are distant cousins right?

People love the park scene with Robin Willians, i get it, but i can totally relate to this scene, for real,
im not a genious, but i know this is real, i really wish i had just one honest true good friendship like this.

The best scene in a movie filled with great scenes.

This movie seems to be contradictory. Earlier on, it seems to be anti-education. Rather than an education, we should all have freedom and originality, living lives the way we want. And later on, it seems to be pro-education, what with this discussion.
themongboy 1 year ago
@themongboy this discussion isn't promoting education though. it's promoting the notion that people shouldn't waste their natural talents, especially if they're as amazing as will's, and should live to their fullest potential.
Jewdude1339 1 year ago
@themongboy part of the message in the movie is education isn't really needed to learn something, rather it is needed as a sort of proof to show that you are qualified.would you hire a guy who seems smart or someone who has at least a shred of proof of his intelligent?also, originality; meaning we shouldn't just regurgitate knowledge from books to look smart but actually understand what you are talking about and produce something original from that knowledge and if you have a gift, don't squander

BraunMachine05 1 year ago
@BraunMachine05 Affleck is killer in this movie but i dont think he has alot of range as an actor and instead of really working on it he just sold out and took alot of money for medium to bad films....no big deal, most actors sell out at some ppoint he just did it early.
KennedyCorey 1 year ago
@KennedyCorey I think it's more dependent on the director he's working with. His ability as an actor is directly proportional to the ability of the director. That's why he's amazing in this movie and Chasing Amy, but sucks in the Michael Bay movies he did.

This is inarguably THE BEST SCENE from my FAVORITE movie. Thanks mysticsunlight for posting this ! LOVE IT !
At times all that some seemingly difficult people like Will need is a few kind words and a a sense of deep faith from a friend.

Balance. Rhythm. Symmetry. Great Scene.
Friends. Brothers. Father-Son. Whoever will understand this intimately.
Best scene. Best thing Ben Affleck ever did on screen.

Great scene...could lose the F-bombs though.
TheAndrewj96 1 year ago
@TheAndrewj96 Nuttin wrong with Fbomb if it's in the right context. People talk like that in real life. F word is probably one of the most versatile and expressive word in English in my opinion.
Xentradi97 1 year ago
And people say Ben Affleck can't act. I wish Michale Bay wouldn't have ruined his career.

i dedicate this scene to every US born citizen. every illegal immigrant would do anything to have what we have. we ourselves are sittin on a fuckin lottery ticket with the opportunity to get good jobs and go study in universities and we sometimes take it for granted. after watching this i feel i owe it to my family to cash in my own lottery ticket

I think there is some envy involved. In my case, intellectually (etc.), I am almost as good as my best friend. She is very dear to me and I want her to be happy and reach her full potential, but I do feel a bit envious. She admitted the same to me. So don't worry. Nobody's perfect.
