how much was the turbine? I'm sort of interested. I just found the Making Do series, so I'm catching up. However, if you did not already know...switching to compact fluorescent bulbs from regular light bulbs can significantly reduce electricity consumption as well. Just food for thought when you can buy new things again...lol.
It was paid for before you started your Making do project so I think it is fine, also as RexRegis says it is doing good for the environment so I think we can forgive you for that :P
I think a wind turbine is actually an addition in the plus column, as it will reduce your consumption and help the environment. The area i live in - Galicia, NorthWest Spain - has lots of them, as there's a lot of mountains around, and lots of wind. They now produce all the regions electricity, and a surplus which is sold to the neighbouring region. They don't look too ugly on the mountains, and there's no coal or nuclear power stations.
Had this linked from warren25's video, and knew you were affiliated with red dwarf, but didnt realy know how until you said "a realy big one" in the same tone as krytone :)
I see the big wind-turbine from my front deck by the ocean , up a bit further there are 7 more. They come from Germany . The Co. is owned by a relative of mine. , they are massive. DianeMarie.
Why is there so many restrictions on trying to conserve energy? I'm begining to research hydrogen, and will hopefully convert my personal auto from gas to water in the near future. I will cut every corner I can, not because I wish to, but because I just can't afford it. I'll be very interested in seeing the outcome of your wind power project. Best wishes
i wish we could have a wind turbine on our house somewhere, but we live in a row of terreces amongst other houses with a load of stupid anygry people who probably wouldn't allow it.
nah, it doesnt count if you paid for it last year! nice one on the wind turbine by the way. i dont know why you have to get planning permission or anything, or why people complain about them, they always look pretty to me. look forward to an update!
i don't think the turbine is a problem, you did buy it last year, so if you bought it then, that woulden't count for now, however if there is any aditional price for you getting it fitted, well that i would question.
I can see why it's a good idea to properly question whether each and every purchase should be "allowed", but I would have to say that the turbine *is*, and not just because it was bought last year. I am having to buy my grandma a plastic tub so she can collect her used plastic bottles for recycling: if I didn't get her the tub, she wouldn't recycle. Obviously not the same thing in terms of hassle, but you get what I mean...
If you get the podcast for Newsnight you should watch the one intitled "Newsnight: 22 Dec 06: Haditha, green energy, Turkmenistan, and physics." The bit about the guy trying to get a wind turbine is interesting and he's switched to green energy too. I'm sure turbine will work though.
hi robert . don;t worry about buying clothes shoes toothbrushes food or vital things like that . you have to survive ! as to the wind turbine this could also be excused as it will help you to cut down on your electricity bill and amke your house more environmentally freindly .
so you you think you get stuborn as you get older ? huh ! i am 31 and have been stuborn for most of my life :)
@bobbyllew: My bro drives a V W Polo. Very reliable - except for that time when he got pranged by a pickled bastard...and that time when the "V W" sign was chavved by...erm, chavs. Oh yes, and he doesn't have central locking. Um. But apart from that, it's a pretty cool little car. I think it's about 70-80 miles to the gallon (two-door, four-seater). Second-hand.
Ooh yes, I know this post is a bit old, but do remember to check your brakes!
@bobbyllew: No offense, but by God it looks like you've aged during this particular series of videos. In this particular one, you look like a mole-man emerging into sunlight for the first time at around 0:15.
This doesn't count surely as it was purchased and all the hard work done last year. Regardless of your 'consuming resolution' this the turbine purchase should be commended just for its contribution to a greener environment..look forward to an update. Good work on the hybrid car..have to admit I went to the same prep school as J clarkson :-(
Keep at it, Robert and don't sound so despondent! I have looked at those too - around £1500 and you get about 1kw at 240volts - right? This doesn't break for one moment your resolution because as "Keeper" says, this is the ultimate in non-consumerism. I shall watch with huge interest your experiences putting it up and using it. Go for it and take loads of video. We wanna see! :-)
Having made the purchase last year, and seeing as it contributes to saving a consumable resource, I think we can let this one slip... just this once...
its not a grey area at all, you already purchased the turbine before you made the resolution, which from the video you first mentionned it, seemed like a pretty on the spot decision when you made it, so its not as if you went on a splurge just before said resolution came into force. no grey area, you put that turbine up!!!
Man I wish I could get one!

Hehe. My school's bought a wondturbine, and we may be considered for solar panels. Eco school all the way.
I'm glad you got a Hybrid and I'm glad you're getting a Wind turbine - both are a positive outlook for the future.
I wish there were more electric cars or hydrocars (I think that's what they're called, they run on water).

I think the making do rules should allow for buying things that have a positive effect on the world. Is that the point of making do anyway?

A hybrid car is one that runs on petrol/gasoline and electricity. I drive a Toyota Prius, I average about 60 miles to the gallon
