i was really angry when i put the dvd in to watch came to where this scene should have been and shouted and got mad and took it out put it back in the case and threw it to the back of my dvds. its out of order i brought the dvd to watch the whole frilm not half
Just so you guys know, the reason its not on DVD is probably because you are watching the widescreen, which is the version shown in the theaters, which did *not* have this scene in it. You are probably surprised to find, as I was, that we grew up with the full screen version, the version that came out, where they *added* this scene back in. The version we saw was never in the theaters.
I've been playing with the idea of making a custom DVD that splices this back in (and then goes back to wide).
I bought the DVD today just because of this song. I can't tell you how disappointed I was to find they had cut it. What was the point in taking it out? It was one of the most emotional scenes of the film. Come on guys, I though you had better judgement that that. Disney misses another one.
Somebody please remind me, but wasn't the scene still shown in the movie, it was just the song that was cut from the release but everything else was still shown including her leaving crying, with Rizzo crying as well and then Michael Caine asking the ghost "why do you delight in tourating me".
This scene should have been left as is and released as part of every DVD release wide screen and full screen alike. It's so weird having watched the movie as a kid with the scene included and then not having it when watching the same movie as an adult you just feel like something is missing from how you remember things.
I have a DVD version with two versions on it, and one version has this song!! Just keep looking for the two-disc edition, it's out there somewhere :) I'm proof.
I had this song memorized at age five, and it still makes me cry when Scrooge starts to sing along and then chokes up... *sniffff*
I don't know why everyone's harping on about this scene being missing, it was always on the VHS version, which is what really matters ha.
Aside from this, I've just had (another) fight with my boyfriend and this song resonates more than it's ever done (when I was little I just felt a bit awkward at my inexplicable rush of emotion). All in all, I JUST HAD A GOOD OL' CRY. THANKS DISNEY.
@veganisextremelygood Me and my friends watched this on dvd last night and it wasn't there, I was the only one who remembered it from the vhs. They thought I was mad
I wasn't a huge fan of this song till I was older (I was only 5 when the movie came out), but now I understand the meaning of it. I still tear up every time when present-day Scrooge starts singing along with her, then he can't finish the song because he's crying...gets me every time. :(
I know, I know! I can never get over that he doesn't even kiss her goodbye one last time, even if she is just a 'shadow of the past' and can't feel him. That's devastation!
295 LIKES!? I thought everyone hated this song! It was supposed to remain a deleted scene and never be included in the film. I am so mad that the DVD I rented of it has the fucking song. I don't care if I get too many negative votes, this deserves more dislikes. It may be a good song, but it doesn't belong in the movie. Deleted scenes are deleted for a reason.

The director should have left it. It was a great scene showing Scrooge in one of his most intimate moments. We all have moments in our lives we wish we could change but his was losing the love of his life in exchange for "business". Now that is hard to swallow. Further more the removal of this scene is a disservice to Michael Caine's truly wonderful acting, emoting such raw emotion and regret.
Blu-ray better damn sure have this!
ps. rock on Michael Caine, we true fans salute you!
Im sure that it has to be on the dvd. the version on youtube may have been an edited one. when they used to play it on cable the song was in it and it was also on the vhs tape i used to have
@Deshobbes I agree, I mean THIS is THE moment in which we understand why he's so bitchy. In addition, they sing a refrain or whatever you call it of this song later "The love we Found", which no one will get why it's there if they didn't see this song.
not to mention this is the damn saddest part in the whole movie.
@Deshobbes Oh my gosh, so true. All so true. Adore Michael Caine, and I genuinely think this is my fave version of the Christmas Carol story, just because the music was superb throughout, so emotive, and Michael Caine makes the best Scrooge ever... but a lot of what makes him great is right there in this scene. I had this on vhs and the song was in it! I am confused as to why it disappeared, but v angry about it, cause it's just so important and sad. x
@Serena2009ification Just saw the movie on tv, but this clip wasn't in it--just watched it now one youtube, and seeing Scrooge cry like a baby made me cry like a a baby.

It takes a great actor to take scenes seriously when they're acting with muppets around them. I love this song and I remember listening to it over and over again as a child.

@Poet2916 Totally agree, Kids can of course understand emotion. This was me and my sister's favourite part of the film as children ,even though it made us sad and still does,it really captured the emotion and the whole meaning of the story... that you should never put "work" etc before "love"...so disappointing they removed it!Beautiful song sung beauitifully
I always hated this song as a kid. I thought it was soo boring; I couldn't wait for her to shut up and get back to the story. But watching it now, I got chills. This truly is the greatest song in the movie. And they cut it from the DVD.

@thedancingoboe agreed, without the song in, no one understands why Rizzo's bawlin his eyes out. so far as anyone knows, she says 'you did once', walks away, and then suddenly Rizzo's crying
@thedancingoboe The reprise? Try the whole freakin movie! If this isn't there, it just seems like seeing Belle somehow makes him tear up and realize the error of his previous ways. THE WHOLE REST OF THE MOVIE MAKES NO SENSE IF THIS IS CUT. *sigh* I agree, whoever decided this had to be cut must have had a lobotomy right beforehand. Now I just pray my VHS will work indefinitely, or at least until they come to their senses.
NO WAY! I just came here because I watched it on TV and I thought they cut the song for timing purposes! I can't believe it's not on the DVD!!! Now I'll never get rid of my VHS.
Sorry guys but you HAVE to feel sorry for him this is reason he hates christmas and she never understood he tried his best for her but she was impatient I can also understand her side tho. I love this song thank you :D xxxx
I bet if we put Charles dickens, Jim Henson, and Walt Disney in a room with both the theatrical version, and production version of this movie playing. Charles Dickens would shake Jim's hand, hug him, and thank him for honoring his classic tale with a great movie. Charles would then turn around and punch Walt Disney in the face, and bitch him out for cutting a lovely song that is an intergal scene to said movie.
@BigLumpyTool LMAO walts been dead for years. i bet he would have loved this song. Not his fault his company was run by morons then. :) Its the company who decided to have it removed.
I know I'm repeating what many have already said, but I cannot fathom as to why they cut this scene out of the DVD release. This scene was, really, the main reason that the Ghost of Christmas Past took Scrooge back through his memories...it was the icing on the cake, and it was ruined. I'm super-glad we still have a perfectly-working VHS copy.
@HeadmistressMercedes I'm with you on this. I still have my vhs version. But literally only a couple hours ago my wife bought the rereleased 25th anniversary dvd. It has a wide screen, and a full screen version. The full screen version still has this song in it. While the wide screen does not.
@BigLumpyTool I'll have to remember that, should our VHS go down the drain. I was maybe 5 or 6 when I first saw this (in theaters, no less ^.^) and I wasn't scarred for life or anything. It was, and is, one of my favourite songs from the movie. Lord Almighty, Disney sanitizes things that aren't even germy...I've never been much of a Disney fan >.<
@HeadmistressMercedes Unfortunately this great film was being created during the muppet buy out by disney process. So they had the production rights, and decided to cut the song. They felt it wouldn't appeal to kids. I was 8, or 9 when I first say this scene, and it appealed to me.
A young Scrooge post-poning love for money, then an older Scrooge walking in truely showing his regret for that choice. Disney ruins every thing they touch
love this one and it always makes me cry like a baby!
and I will never understand why they took this song out of the German version's DVD - I thought it was on it, so I gave away my English video cassette after purchasing the DVD - d'oh!
I own this on VHS... never knowing it was taken out of the theatrical release until I read about it tonight. (I was only 6 when it was released theatrically... so I don't know if I saw it or not in its run.) I can't imagine the film being released without this beautiful song. Especially with the ending of the film "When Love Is Found."
Is there a wide-screen release with the film on DVD that has this in it? I don't wanna purchase it without knowing this song is in there.
@ryanthecalvinist - depening on which country you live in! I bought the DVD that has been released here in Germany and the song was not on it. now I regret having been so fast in giving the tape away! so I would check out the DVD first, maybe rent it from the store or something - or have them check the DVD for you in a blockbuster - ask them if they could put the DVD in one of their players and scroll to that scene - then you will know for sure! good luck on finding a DVD with the song on it!
This always made me cry, but since my girlfriend left me, it's even worse. I know, I know, twenty years old and I still blub over Muppet films. There's a queue round the block to date me.
I think its a decent enough song and it probably shouldnt have been cut from more recent releases....that being said, it does take the momentum of the film to an immediate stop
Meredith Braun who plays Belle in Muppet Christmas Carol has just launched her official website / youtube channel and is working on her debut album! For more details follow us on twitter @stagedoorlondon
"... You did once." She says that so believably. I love that moment, and it makes me feel so... sad because their life together just diminished into nothing.
they cut this song out of the new dvd release!!! I was horrified and really upset...my ex actually laughed at my outrage. Its one of my favourite songs of all time. xx
@Dtennantlover1 i know how you feel, i went out to buy the dvd as my tape was looking a scratched, i could not believe they cut the song out, i felt like lashing the dvd in the bin ,i was that disguisted
It's so heartbreaking. That song breaks me up every time. Even Rizzo wept.
It's june and and I was watching Christmas Carol (George C Scott) to get my mind off our godawful drought. Then I remembered this song from The Muppel Chrismas Carol. Yep, it's as sad as I remember.
listen to this song then Bless us all and then the reprise, The love weve found, if you are not curled into a ball sobbing like a child afterwards youare officialy not human.
I remember watching this movie every Christmas when I was little and feeling really sad when I got to this part. This song helped me to understand, even at that young age, what it meant to break-up like this. And now that I'm grown up, I'm glad that this song was put in the movie.
@Dopeslax disney cut it from the theatrical release and most dvd releases because they thought kids would not get the meaning of it but the director wanted it to be in the movie and thats why its on VHS release.
I get the reasons why they cut the song, even if I don't agree with them. But it makes more SENSE with it in - at the end of the movie when they all sing "The Love We've Found," it connects it back to this moment. I think it was a mistake to remove that connection.
Why did they cut this song from the film, It wasnt in the christmas day version or dvd!!! crazy this was really emotional. One of the best christmas fims there is. who has they answet to why they cut it? weird? was it michael cane that was ashamed of his harmony?
There was a version on television earlier today that cut this song. It's an absolute crime, seeing as this song is the crown jewel in the entire film, and is essential to the story.
they cut it out of the dvd? i used to have this on video and this scene was still in it- amazing song. and best interpretation of the ghost of christmas past.
the thing is , when michael caine come's in and can't quite finish the words its so touching its outrageous to cut the scene from the dvd version i just watched with the kids.
Hey, if you get the newest DVD this song is still on the FULL SCREEN version. There are 2 on the DVD. Widescreen had this cut, FULL SCREEN has it. I watch the movie in widescreen until he visits his old job than i go back and switch it till after this song.
I NEVER thought I'd say this but cutting this song out is 1,000,000 times worse than ANYTHING George Lucas did to revise the original Star Wars, Hayden Christianson included
@ThespianVl As a star wars and muppets fan I'd have to agree with you cutting this song irritates me more than jar-jar ever could, not by much but cutting this song is ahead.
@MegaPurplebunny I know just how you feel about it. I think it's a mistake, too, but "If I Never Knew You" was cut out of "Pocahontas" because that scene was only 90% animated and during test screenings with child audiences, their attention seemed to wander away from the film. But I agree, both are big mistakes, especially this song being cut from TV airings and DVD versions (except the fullscreen of the 10th Anniversary DVD).
I always adored this song. Seems such a shame to cut it in different home editions. By cutting this song yet leaving the reprise in at the end of the film, the ending just doesn't have the full impact.
This is such a beautiful song. How could they cut from the DVD. What a mistake. I am so glad I still have the VHS. I almost bought the DVD but if it's not on it I don't want to buy it.
@crosscountrycreation agreed, I'm willing to buy a VCR and the VHS version rather than the DVD without this song what an incredibly foolish thing to cut this out.
@Tygra81 Or maybe it was the full screen version... I just remember putting it on the tv while at a party and I saw her singing. The first time I put the wide screen the second time I put the full screen.
@musicbox193 Actually I was replying to a post that said they had seen this on the wide screen DVD not sure if it's true, he later replied stating he was unsure but if it is I know which version I'm buying!
@andre34343 Film maker believed it slowed the movie down and made the overall film too long. I think it's BS. This actually gives some development to Scrooge's backstory.
i was really angry when i put the dvd in to watch came to where this scene should have been and shouted and got mad and took it out put it back in the case and threw it to the back of my dvds. its out of order i brought the dvd to watch the whole frilm not half

Now I just pray my VHS will work indefinitely, or at least until they come to their senses.

NO WAY! I just came here because I watched it on TV and I thought they cut the song for timing purposes! I can't believe it's not on the DVD!!! Now I'll never get rid of my VHS.

BigLumpyTool 4 months ago
@BigLumpyTool LMAO walts been dead for years. i bet he would have loved this song. Not his fault his company was run by morons then. :) Its the company who decided to have it removed.
chinbunny1 3 months ago
I know I'm repeating what many have already said, but I cannot fathom as to why they cut this scene out of the DVD release. This scene was, really, the main reason that the Ghost of Christmas Past took Scrooge back through his memories...it was the icing on the cake, and it was ruined. I'm super-glad we still have a perfectly-working VHS copy.
HeadmistressMercedes 4 months ago
@HeadmistressMercedes I'm with you on this. I still have my vhs version. But literally only a couple hours ago my wife bought the rereleased 25th anniversary dvd. It has a wide screen, and a full screen version. The full screen version still has this song in it. While the wide screen does not.
BigLumpyTool 4 months ago
@BigLumpyTool I'll have to remember that, should our VHS go down the drain. I was maybe 5 or 6 when I first saw this (in theaters, no less ^.^) and I wasn't scarred for life or anything. It was, and is, one of my favourite songs from the movie. Lord Almighty, Disney sanitizes things that aren't even germy...I've never been much of a Disney fan >.<
HeadmistressMercedes 4 months ago
@HeadmistressMercedes Unfortunately this great film was being created during the muppet buy out by disney process. So they had the production rights, and decided to cut the song. They felt it wouldn't appeal to kids. I was 8, or 9 when I first say this scene, and it appealed to me.
A young Scrooge post-poning love for money, then an older Scrooge walking in truely showing his regret for that choice. Disney ruins every thing they touch

I don't wanna purchase it without knowing this song is in there.
ryanthecalvinist 6 months ago
@ryanthecalvinist - depening on which country you live in! I bought the DVD that has been released here in Germany and the song was not on it. now I regret having been so fast in giving the tape away! so I would check out the DVD first, maybe rent it from the store or something - or have them check the DVD for you in a blockbuster - ask them if they could put the DVD in one of their players and scroll to that scene - then you will know for sure! good luck on finding a DVD with the song on it!

I remember watching this movie every Christmas when I was little and feeling really sad when I got to this part. This song helped me to understand, even at that young age, what it meant to break-up like this. And now that I'm grown up, I'm glad that this song was put in the movie.

I love this movie! and I love her bonnet!
upwards11 1 year ago
The director cut it because he felt it made the film too melodramatic.
But it's the entire axis of Scrooge's character development! It's THE turning point.
Dopeslax 1 year ago 24
@Dopeslax disney cut it from the theatrical release and most dvd releases because they thought kids would not get the meaning of it but the director wanted it to be in the movie and thats why its on VHS release.
prhdb94 3 months ago
@Dopeslax Actually it was studio that took it out. the director wanted to keep it in and returned it for the video release
BoyNamedSue4 3 months ago
I get the reasons why they cut the song, even if I don't agree with them. But it makes more SENSE with it in - at the end of the movie when they all sing "The Love We've Found," it connects it back to this moment. I think it was a mistake to remove that connection.

Cloraform 1 year ago
Why did they cut this song from the film, It wasnt in the christmas day version or dvd!!! crazy this was really emotional. One of the best christmas fims there is. who has they answet to why they cut it? weird? was it michael cane that was ashamed of his harmony?
guy1492 1 year ago
There was a version on television earlier today that cut this song. It's an absolute crime, seeing as this song is the crown jewel in the entire film, and is essential to the story.
Chizpurfle52595 1 year ago 2
Watched it this morning... hauntingly beautiful... when Scrooge breaks down nearly does it for me. Great Xmas film!

they cut it out of the dvd? i used to have this on video and this scene was still in it- amazing song. and best interpretation of the ghost of christmas past.
TunaEars 1 year ago
Belle: "You did once."
She gets up to sing and Scrooges back hands her and
Scrooge yells: "You still do!"
Then this movie turns to the dark side.

the thing is , when michael caine come's in and can't quite finish the words its so touching its outrageous to cut the scene from the dvd version i just watched with the kids.

Hey, if you get the newest DVD this song is still on the FULL SCREEN version. There are 2 on the DVD. Widescreen had this cut, FULL SCREEN has it. I watch the movie in widescreen until he visits his old job than i go back and switch it till after this song.
OsskaSchindla 1 year ago
I NEVER thought I'd say this but cutting this song out is 1,000,000 times worse than ANYTHING George Lucas did to revise the original Star Wars, Hayden Christianson included
ThespianVl 1 year ago
@ThespianVl I don't see how, I saw this song as being essential to the story, but to each their own I suppose.

this song being cut out reminds me of the song "If i never knew you " being cut out of the movie "Pocahuntas". Both being BIG Mistakes!
MegaPurplebunny 1 year ago 2

I almost bought the DVD but if it's not on it I don't want to buy it.
crosscountrycreation 1 year ago
@crosscountrycreation agreed, I'm willing to buy a VCR and the VHS version rather than the DVD without this song what an incredibly foolish thing to cut this out.
Tygra81 1 year ago
Maybe they don't like her singing voice? That's why they cut it? On my dvd it's only on the wide screen version.
Wonderxandra 1 year ago
@Wonderxandra wait this song IS on the wide screen version?
Tygra81 1 year ago
@Tygra81 Or maybe it was the full screen version... I just remember putting it on the tv while at a party and I saw her singing. The first time I put the wide screen the second time I put the full screen.

@Tygra81 that's good.
Is it actually featured as part of the movie or is it a bonus

why doesnt this appears in the movie
andre34343 1 year ago
@andre34343 Film maker believed it slowed the movie down and made the overall film too long. I think it's BS. This actually gives some development to Scrooge's backstory.
