Somewhat disjointed, but oh so modern Jazz compared to John's past fusion efforts. Very Miles indeed but with the flair only McLaughlin can do. I like this band a lot.
I have been listening to John for more than 35 years and I would say from a technical point of view he may have even improved over the decades, the speed is amazing but unfortunately that music does not excite me, it`s rather strenous to listen to it. To me his greatest period has been during Mahavishnu orchestra 1.
I don`t play an instrument, I`m just a consumer and I find it worth to mention that he remained slim and dynamic over the decades which is not taken for granted.
Actually we are allowed to have an opinion, and this is why if you go to a John Mclaughlin concert, or a Terry Bozzio concert, you will see musicians in the audience treating these guys differently then these other phenomenal musicians. These guys have something over those. Just as Buddy Rich had that something over the other great Jazz drummers. It would be like seeing Jimi Hendrix live VS Stevie Ray Vaughn, Stevie was great, but Jimi was on a different level live.
Greatest Musician in the history of music, he is the greatest that will ever be, this is why all great Drummers, and Guitarist look up to him as God!! He has never sold out, and continues to amaze. Not at just how fast, but the style, and melodies. He invented circle picking, and is just the best that will ever be.
@drumhobo i think what makes music..."music" is that it's created by humans. John Mclaughlin is human and I'm sure plenty of great guitarists and drummers and all types look up to him as such. and of course there will be people better and of course there will be people worse, but what makes it all beautiful is the emotion, effort and time it takes to make things like this. that's what's human about it, music is created by us humans. that's what i love. i look at him as a great fucking musician.
@drumhobo i mean with so many musicians like buddy rich, jimi hendrix, brian chippendale, greg saunier, zach hill, lionel hampton, gene krupa, louis bellson, al di meola, chuck schuldiner, spencer seim, omar rodriguez, thomas erak (unfortually a total douche, but such talent), nick reinhardt, vince rodgers, john clardy, tom jenkinson, victor wooten, steve smith, thomas pridgen, esperanza spalding, billy cobham, john coltrane, miles davis, benny goodman, glenn miller...i could go on forever...
@drumhobo you couldn't pick a "best" or "greatest of all time"...people who take the time to play music or create any kind of art are all great. the ones who pour their hearts and souls into it are all bad asses. not mention so much undiscovered talent that's out there...shit you've never dreamed of...i;ve never dreamed of could be being made right around the corner in someones bed room for all you know coming up with something you may even like more than this one day. everything is great man!

I love all John's music but I wish he still played acoustic. Is my favorite next to some of Mile's stuff.

Dominique di Piazza is my favorite bass man. but more important to me is his lp "front page" which shows wonderful music .

I am VERY interesting in buying this. I'm a McLaughlin fan, but also a Dominique DiPiazza and Fbass fan. Any guidance for me?

If I remember rightly, JM into'd this number as a Husband idea, sadly not on To The One (phenomenal collection). Nicely uploaded, great sound.
