  • I love the sarangi! And I love your music at the end credits of The Cube. After I saw the movie the music you played made it that much scarier. Just sent chills down my spine. (Good chills) Loved it.

  • Hmmm. 0:17 seems to be in the higher octave? Can you explain please. Perhaps it was "screeching" from the Double Bass bow?

  • Hi,

Yes, it was bowing near the bridge, causing the string to move into the upper octave.

    Thanks!

  • MORE plzz... post more...

  • that was sooo sad and filled with emotion. really nice job... hope u make more videos or release a cd or something

  • What antique one did you find? What is the make, any pictures? nice recording

  • Here are some responses: Yes, I'm using a concert bass bow. I'm using false harmonics to create that effect (by bowing close to the bridge). This is a very inexpensive sarangi....your typical Indian music shop one, bought in Toronto for around $500 Cdn. I think. I've since found an antique one which is far superior. Thanks for you comments!!

i saw you do it many diferent times throughout the video but i think 00:23 (aroundabouts) is the best example probably. you kinda use your fingers to shake up and down to create that kind of shaking effect. i have not yet figured out how to do that n wud realy apreciate sum help if u cud tell me how to that wud b wonderful.

    thanx

    bye

  • Beautiful. Great stuff!

  • If I'm not mistaken, he's using a Double Bass bow...hooray for bass!

  • ive sent you an email. let me know if you got it.

  • i play sarangi.

    tips:

    practice practice practice. .

  • Thanks for the tips... I have a prob now. My Sarangi is totally out of tune and I don't know how to tune it... any suggestions? Where you guys live?

  • im in Houston.

bout tuning, lol, its an essential. you need to learn how. easiest way, is, just, use a chromatic tuner. SA i believe should be a D. and then you can figure out the rest. i suggest you get a tanpura though.

  • wow! Quite a coincidence. I'm right now in Houston for 2 weeks. I live in NY but here to meet family. Any chance we can meet? I would really appreciate it. Let me know if you would have time... I have the untuned sarangi here with me now. Thanks! gmodalkey at yahoo in case you want to e-mail.

  • hey...i just bought one. Any suggestions and tips to learn? Are you self taught? How many years have you been playing?

  • Hi, I've been playing about 7 yeaars, but played violin before. I'm mostly self taught, but have studied under a couple of masters. The video was done after I'd been playing about a year. Advice: You must find a teacher. Listen and analyze. Practice practice, practice!

  • Thanks for the tips... I have a prob now. My Sarangi is totally out of tune and I don't know how to tune it... any suggestions? Where you guys live?

  • Hi, thanks for your comment. I've heard it called the most difficult of East Indian instruments and I can see why. It's a real struggle to get a nice tone out of it, much more difficult than a violin, which is hard enough. I play a lot of different instruments and the sarangi is definitely the biggest challenge. Cheers, Mark

  • ive heard the sarangi is difficult

but how difficult would you say it is?

  • Hi, I'm the sarangi player......The sarangi was recorded live, but then I took the track and added a synth drone underneath it,and also a little reverb on the sarangi. Thanks for the nice comments! Cheers, Mark

  • Can you please post more? Thanks!

  • Beautiful sounding. This one looks different. Are there different kinds of sarangis? And how did u sustain that sound so much? is it amplified? any effects?

  • Hi, this is a traditional classical sarangi (a very cheap one) There are countless variations of folk sarangis. I'm just using a video camera microphone to record. I think I may have added some reverb to it later....but I can't remember! Cheers, Mark

  • @korvenator

I am looking to purchase one. Where did u get this one?

  • What's making the drone?

  • What's making the drone?
