@tiltm0d3 The Iowa class battleships that the US had in the Gulf carried a secondary battery of five inch guns. I don't recall that they ever got close enough to use them. The 16 inch main battery however got quite a workout. :)
I was about 6 when this was going on and I loved every minute of it. It was better than a movie and every night on TV there were lots of jets, tanks, ships, and guns to look at. The 1990-1991 Gulf War never ended, it was a put in ceasefire agreement like the Korean War. If the first party doesn't adhere with the agreement then the other party has every right to resume hostilities that was Saddam started in the 1st place. Iraq didn't. It went from 1990-2003 when Bush invaded and toppled Saddam Hussein's regime from power.
If it was called the first Gulf war, it would have ended in a peace treaty like the Treaty of Versailles ending WW1.
@publicmario17 Sorry bro but The Treaty of Versailles didn't end the the First World War against Germany. The war continued economically, financially and with territorial conflicts. Setting up a second war. The British called it the second 30 year war against Germany.
@blaugot No, idiot - if it was, then British and French troops would hold against the German Army as it had more power and it would have prevented the 2nd World War. Just like Iraq and Korea, we manage to hold them on from preventing them from invading our allies.
The treaty Versailles ended the conflict, thus a peace treaty.
@blaugot Your point is made, but you chose a pedantic way of stating it. The Treaty of Versailles ended the military war. For example, we are now saying that the US has "left" Iraq, but pedantic people will argue that we have not left since our embassy is still there along with civil engineers. We all know that the Treaty of Versailles was a huge mistake, disgraced the German people and directly led to Hitler's success. But TECHNICALLY the Treaty ended the war with Germany's complete surrender.
@publicmario17 There is "literal" speech and then there is "figurative" speech. Usually those who overtly strain over terms are considered to be "Pedantic".
@softsummernights People like you, who claim major events in history were fake, staged or 'blue screened' piss me off. @ClayDavisStateSenate During the '80s, Iran and Iraq had fought a prolonged war and Hussein has enourmous war debts. Hussein claimed the oil-rich nation of Kuwait was part of Iraq. On August 2,1990 hussein invaded and looted Kuwait and then headed to Saudi Arabia. If Iraq conquered Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, it would control half of the world's oil reserves and severly threaten U.S oil supplies. Jan 16,1991 Desert Shield occured( air attacks) followed by ground war (Desert Storm) Feb 23,1991

@Rjackman84 Ive noticed recently that our freedom is also under attack by people who live in caves, or have virtually no intercontinental strike capability.
Conspiraty theorists will claim that the start of Desert Storm was timed to coincide with the start of the broadcast-network evening newscasts on the East Coast.
continually it is evident that it doesn't actually matter whether we win or lose these conflicts. what matters in these conflicfts is that the military infrastructure is making money perpetually. win or lose isn't the point. it's that the wars go on and on. there's no money in peace. continually the poorer persons in any given nation are the ones who die for these "causes", and it spares their respective politicians from creating work that doesn't involve killing.
Sometimes I wonder if people realy realize the responsabilities of a large and powerful country like the U.S.. Sure this war was for oil and it was about money. One thing people don't seem to consider is the fact that the U.S. needs to maintain it's reputation as a military force. This country is almost required to go out and throw some wieght around if it's leaders want to maintain the status of their country. The U.S needed to show the world what it's military is capable of doing if attacked.

Peter Jennings: "How close is it to the city where you are, Gary?"
Gary: "We now see an entire stream of red tracer fire.. and now sirens.. air raid sirens are beginning to sound over Baghdad. The lights of the city itself continue to burn on the ground.. street lights, house lights. As this occurs, the flashes continue throughout the sky. ther's obviously an air raid underway right now."
Lol, Gary didn't answer Peter Jennings's question.

good ole Pete Jennings, i used to watch abc news with french subtitles when i was going to high school. Thanks for boosting my english level Barry...oh I mean Pete :)
I was only a little kid when I witnessed this in South Kuwait along with my family. I can't describe the excitement we all felt, it has finally begun! It was literally surreal, like the gates of hell opening in the night sky. This might sound weird, but it was beautiful in a way.
I servered with an artillery unit in desert storm and as told by general swartzkoff, we finished what we went to do, FREE Kuwait from Iraqi. Iraqi choose thier fate! SO don't ever forget we did what we was sent to do.
I agree man, the mission was to liberate Kuwait and repel the Iraqi invasion and mission complete. And for the dumbass people in here talking about the U.S base in Kuwait damn of course they would want a U.S presence on their land so this will never repeat itself again.
@4goffs haha.. u just another fools with a gear. u fail at school, not capable to further study in college because u sucks. u got no jobs, ur mom hate u because u keep ask her money. ur slut gf left u because u are such a looser. and then u make the last decision.. by join the army.being a puppet and fight with the some "other guys war". n now u r bitching on utube how heroic u r. get loose looser!. what u do?.. u do smething that u shouldn't do.by being an idiot hero.
@achotto With your spelling your're really attacking people over their education? Really?
The army would wash you out, so would the navy, the AF, the marines, the coast guard. You'd be a washout even in the boy scouts.
'sides, you wouldn't have the balls for it anyway. Once the proverbial shit hits the literal fan, you're the kind of guy who will hide behind all the soldiers, sailors and marines.
@4goffs i hope you have good answer tp told GOD in doom day if he ask you why you killed IraqiS ? may be you can told him the oil or may be Bush told me to go there and fight !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Look how advanced Iraq was at the time; girls without scarf, everyone speaks english, they are not YELLING to the camera,... It's a lot different now...
@richardrichard07 and now you are happy after the american rule? Shiite control Sunnis, Kurds want an independant state, the country that is full of oil, has no GAS, Cars que for hours, electricity etc.. , do you know these facts?
Today Feb 26 Kuwait celebrates its liberation from Saddam's invasion. Check out the museum they built to honor those who participated in desert storm. You can google it. It's called to forget museum. I'm sure you'll like it.
ABC's Gary Shepherd was the first on the air with the bombing of Baghdad, via telephone. CNN, however, always gets the credit because they had set up work-around with the Iraqi government to continue broadcasting once the phone lines were cut.
I watched this newscast that night. A few months later my second cousin, who worked for ABCNews at the time, sent me an official Burrell's transcript.
The official reason was to expel Iraq from Kuwait, but IMHO, I find it distressing that after 9-11, the most popular name that Kuwaitis were giving their children was "Osama". Something to think about.
Definitely oil. And with the on-again off-again alliances we have with the Mideast countries, it worries me that someday our troops may have to return to protect corporate assets in that region. I'm still searching for answers whether Halliburton is even paying taxes to fund our troops -which may eventually be called to protect them.
yea the U.S. got their hands on almost everything they want (with the help of the british cuz they control this country anyway). This country is nothing more than an illusion. its like we live in the matrix cuz we think we got good politics good army and a strong country when in actuality its run by a bunch of bankers and corrupt secret societies.
I don't think corrupt individuals are as powerful as you think....they can be stopped. I'm assuming that you're an Iraqi, but the country you live in doesn't have to be an illusion. It'll take a lot of work to fix, but it can be done. U.S. forces can only hold off terrorists for a period of time, so it's important to rebuild your country as soon as possible. Iraq is your country, and don't let anyone, be it terrorists, or corrupt politicians, take it from you.
After that gulf war Kuwaitis loved the name Bush. They distrusted all the Arabic propaganda ever since. & they're still supporting the war against Al-Qaeda.
@N1TEMAR3187 Most certainly not to FREE Kuwait. Like all things it involved Israel's protection and secondarily Saudi Arabia whose despotic regime we've supported for a couple generations now.
As I was over there at this time I never saw this unti now.
I was sitting, drinking warm camels milk and tea with a Saudi AF Lt. while listening to the BBC when this occured. They broke into CNN and Wold Blitzer hiding under his bed broadcasting from Baghdad.
I told the Lt., In a month I can go home. It was two months.
It -was- more like news. Today it's just entertainment to distract us from what's really going on. If you really want to see something search youtube on "Edward R. Murrow".
I remember exactly where I was and what doing (heading out the door for a meeting) when I saw this newscast.
I remember being nervously excited that night. After the previous weeks of boredom, it was a welcome change. 3rd Armored

I was watching NBC Nightly News when the war started, but this video captures the moment as well. What a surreal start to Desert Storm.

4goffs 3 years ago 37
I agree man, the mission was to liberate Kuwait and repel the Iraqi invasion and mission complete. And for the dumbass people in here talking about the U.S base in Kuwait damn of course they would want a U.S presence on their land so this will never repeat itself again.

ABC's Gary Shepherd was the first on the air with the bombing of Baghdad, via telephone. CNN, however, always gets the credit because they had set up work-around with the Iraqi government to continue broadcasting once the phone lines were cut.
I watched this newscast that night. A few months later my second cousin, who worked for ABCNews at the time, sent me an official Burrell's transcript.

what was the point of this war?
N1TEMAR3187 4 years ago
The official reason was to expel Iraq from Kuwait, but IMHO, I find it distressing that after 9-11, the most popular name that Kuwaitis were giving their children was "Osama". Something to think about.
luvofcountry 4 years ago
thats funny but theres always a story behind a story. that aint the only reason we went to war
N1TEMAR3187 4 years ago
Definitely oil. And with the on-again off-again alliances we have with the Mideast countries, it worries me that someday our troops may have to return to protect corporate assets in that region. I'm still searching for answers whether Halliburton is even paying taxes to fund our troops -which may eventually be called to protect them.
luvofcountry 4 years ago
yea the U.S. got their hands on almost everything they want (with the help of the british cuz they control this country anyway). This country is nothing more than an illusion. its like we live in the matrix cuz we think we got good politics good army and a strong country when in actuality its run by a bunch of bankers and corrupt secret societies.
N1TEMAR3187 4 years ago

This was one of my first memories as a child, probably because My father was over there (USMC Tank Commander)
nickpearson18 4 years ago
As I was over there at this time I never saw this unti now.
I was sitting, drinking warm camels milk and tea with a Saudi AF Lt. while listening to the BBC when this occured. They broke into CNN and Wold Blitzer hiding under his bed broadcasting from Baghdad.
I told the Lt., In a month I can go home. It was two months.

BTW it was very cheap war ,about 13 billions USD - compare to that so called "War On Terror"

It -was- more like news. Today it's just entertainment to distract us from what's really going on. If you really want to see something search youtube on "Edward R. Murrow".
I remember exactly where I was and what doing (heading out the door for a meeting) when I saw this newscast.
