Everyone should watch Ryan Alter Egos documentary it's on a DVD. It was his choice to live on the streets, his ways to meet people and be free (in some way)... after he realised how his art couldn't be done as he wished and had to do it for money.. people tried to help him but no one really understood his decision to just fade away in plain view away from all the bureacracy and crazyness of the capitalist system... a system which only benefits the cowards and lawmakers.. RIP great man!
It is indeed unfortunate that those of us that are the most talented feel everything so deeply and that is the single biggest reason as to why so many of us have had addiction issues for most of our lives. Thank God I was given another chance at life without drugs ruling my existance. My hope now is to try to share my strength, courage and hope with other suffering addicts that they too may live.
I have only recently been introduced to his works but clearly his contributions to art and animation are beautiful. I hope his current state is better than his former life.
I didn't know he died! When I learned about him and his film in University, I wept because I couldn't understand how Canada could leave one of her best artists on the street... I still don't understand how the NFB could turn away from him, how his fellow filmmakers at the National Filmboard could live in the same city and just walk by him... It's just not kosher.
I really understand your feeling, but apparently you don't know enough about drugs and alcohol adiction, and maybe that's the why you don't understand. I bet he had many oportunities, but adictions are envy bitches, they won't feel satisfied unless they are the only thing you do and think about.

Amazing work done by this man. It is a surprise his death did not bring a lot of attention. However, I think Ryan himself would have prefered it to be covered less.
Associated Press got the press release two days after he died. Canadian Press picked up the story. I'm surprised too...I think Ryan would have liked the buzz. Anyway , his legend continues and final film Spare Change will be released beginning of 2008.
He kind of reminds me of Keith Richards.

I got to remember all these great animators, and note to put down "don't even think about becoming addicted to anything"
