Apparently, Mike and Joel were aware of the inevitable comparison between the two of them as host, and Mike was poking fun at the notion in this video. They were both great...in their own way. I would like to have seen more of this robot, though. He looks like fun.

Joel was kinda laid back and looked like he was stoned to be honest. Not hating on him because he created this series in the first place. But Mike's charisma outshined Joel in every way in my opinion.
I prefer Mike because he was the host when I discovered the show. To be fair to Joel though, I haven't really given him a chance. To me, MST3k will forever and always be saturday mornings on comedy central. Bowl of cereal....nursing a hangover....little wake and bake with my college roommates.....and MST3k. The weekend was still ahead of us and there were thousands of college poo-swas to conquer!!!! Good times.....ahhhh good times..... NORMAL VIEW!!!!!!!
You know, I think there's a sign something is wrong with Mike's robot when its body shape isn't symmetrical like Joel's robots as if Mike doesn't understand robot aesthetics....
I gotta say Mike's always been my favorite because I started watching during season 7 or so.. I never got to see the Joel episodes until much later. I do prefer Dr.F and TV's Frank as the mads though, even though Mary Jo is hilarious too. In the end the whole show is just amazing ^^
I would love to find how that robot would have riffed on movies............in fact, I want an entire new series; mystery science theater 4000; get demetri martin to riff movies with this robot and cambot in a refurbished statalite of love a petty corporation bought off of mike and the robots.

Servo: Yeah. ????: Dee-Stroy! Dee-Stroy! Pearl: Oh just look at him. He's so adorable. Mike you better let the nice robot watch the movie or I'm shutting off your oxygen. Mike: But Pearl.. Suddenly the a door opens up and in walks Joel! Everbody: Joel! ????: Dee-Stroy! Dee-Stroy!
Mike: Joel I just wanted to build my own robot like you, but I just messed everything up.
????: Dee-Stroy! Dee-Stroy!
Joel: Hey don't be so hard on yourself. You just forgot to program in his ethical subroutines. I can get him up and running in no time. You guys just go back into the theater, and when your next break comes up you'll have a new pal ready for riffing.
By far this is one of my favorite host segments. No matter how many times I will see this one I am sure I will keep on laughing. Also one of my favorite episodes.

i don't get it when people prefer joel over mike, or when people prefer mike over joel. mike was the head writer of the show, he was kind of the "zanier" host for me i think. i love them both.
The show itself was the greatness. No one of the contributors made or broke it, and none of them have made anything to equal it. It was the show itself.
me too they both had their own special take on the series, personally tho i like the shorts with mike mostly because i liked pearl, bobo, and brain guy to tv's frank and the dr. i just felt like every single short with them was the same. but i can understand still people liking mike more, joel was obviously stoned almost every episode hahaha
@circusrobots I could never choose either. I enjoyed Joel's riffing on Mitchell as much as I enjoyed Mike's riffing on Prince of Space. Nobody should be wasting their time choosing between the two.
@circusrobots I think both the hosts were fairly nifty and solid in their own ways. And as for villains, I prefer the more "classic" villains: Dr. Clayton Forrester and TV's Frank.
@octopodesrex Hey, I think Dr. Erhardt's an okay character, I haven't seen too much of him, but I think he was a fairly interesting part of the REAL early show n' such.

@d983394 I think so too. Plus, for a lot of the show's run Mike was head writer, even when Joel was the host. So when you see Joel episodes, a lot of times you're still seeing Mike's influence!
I couldn't agree more, each host had their own appeal. As a personal preference I enjoy the Mike episodes the best but I can see why people like Joel. Depending on what I feel like I will watch either a Mike or Joel episode.
