Sting Dancing! Laughable. Ask REAL Mods from the 60's how we danced! And that suit! Oh My God! We would not have been caught dead wearing a scruffy parka or wandering down Carnaby Street! They were Art Mods and nothing to do with the Real McCoy who bought their suits, hand-made from east end Jewish tailors. LOL.
There's one tiny detail wrong with this clip - in the very first shot they show a foot encased in stiletto heel - mod girls would NEVER have worn those!
The director spoke in an interview about the camera angles, he said Sting was such a shit dancer, they only filmed his top half, and even then it wasn't great...
@royayersrules Sting was in his late 20's...I think he was damn good...although his best performance was in 1982's "Brimstone and Treacle" (which some kind soul recently uploaded on Youtube) Terrific, dark film. Check it out.
@KellyGreen5555 Most Mods were 15-18 year old kids. At the time this was filmed Billy Idol would have made a better Face, provided he didn't bring King Rocker to the party. Maybe even Stuart Goddard (Adam Ant). Let's face it , he didn't have too many lines, just had to do that silly eyebrow thing and try to look cool and mean!
@royayersrules How would Billy Idol or rather William Michael Broad have made a better Face? Neither of them could dance to Mod music, which is rnb type or soul music, nor can Stuart. Sting, no offense, just looks unconvincing and phony.
I come from Denmark (And don't you guys say, that you can't be a Mod if you aint from Britain, because I see a danish flag on a scooter, riding next to Sting!) and I'm a modern mod, so to say. Don't have a old Vespa, but I have a new LX50 though. But man, I really love Britain and the mod culture. Fuck all the gangsta shit, this is so much better.
so where the hell does art come into things like this, I wasn't even born then but it seems like when any movie comes out trying to depict a scene or a genre or movement, its usually too late, it usually as mentioned above gives the bridge & tunnel crew something live to copy down to the funny ear-rings, its like sometimes the art of movie in this capacity is just a big turd on something that actually means something to some! am i making sense, damn I'm drunk!
DAVEHOWARD 22 - What i meant was this...in 1978 there was an underground mod scene growing...it was cool and credible. In 79 Quadrophenia came out and suddenly there's little Mods running about shouting we are the mods, and copying scenes they's seen in the film. Suddenly the credibility dissapeared, and so to did everything connected with Mod (Except Paul Weller!). Obviously, it didn't dissappear, it just went back underground..
@fukmegurlz I'm afraid not, people are individual these days. In the sixties, the fashions came in weekly and there wasn't a huge range, so it just won't happen today. You have to move on. Can't resurrect the sixties, mate.
I'm 17 and a Mod but I get slagged by my mates but who gives a fuck! Its a bit unusual to see a boy in a suit in a council estate in Edinburgh in the 21st century, but who cares.
@samjordan1795 im 14 and a mod i have zoot suits and a parka all that fred perry, ben sherman, your 17 so do you have a scooter im geting one when im 16.... my mates dont cera that im a mod as most of them are mods too and the over ones who are not just dont cerar my girlfrends step dad has a mod bar/club in london its good
@samjordan1795 You'll get more women than other blokes because most women are intrigued by men with individuality and the balls to go against the flow.
66 STYLIST..The film did,nt do nothing for TRUE MODS?. What the original 60,s crowd? They,d have been in there 40,s,50,s when this came out. It did get people who wern,t even born then into mod culture, almost single handedly as i remember, and name another film thats influenced a music movement..More into punk meself, dont mind the who, small faces mind.
i am 49 now and was part of the mod revival in 1979 ! yeah the film inspired me and i still own a vespa and i consider myself a SCOOTERIST with a big mod background ! the SCENE is as big as ever now and there are many young mods come to the weekend rallies !
@moonbonham1 I agree, the whole moral of the story is the exact opposite of a celebration of the Mod lifestyle. I think the moral of the story is that all of the cliques and fashions of our adolescence seem so important at the time, but what we wear and who we associate ourselves with is, in the end, irrelevant. We are all unique individuals, and we need to embrace the freedom to be more than a label.
Quadrophenia was and always will be a shite film that did NOTHING for the true Mods. It just meant you get a lot of fools who think they're Mods, because they copy what the film says...Totally missing the point of Mod completely.
Ahh Johnny foreigner..Not bothered about sting, couldnt give a crap about the bloke, you must want him bad,as you are holding a candle to this bloke! My point was,he was a crap dancer and actorin the film Quad...When he is on stage still got no idea, seen The Police back in 79, fuckin shite..
SpeedTriple59: probably you haven't seen much of Sting and probably again you cannot think of somebody acting AS IF he had to dance in a certain way. If you'd seen S in his concerts you'd probably notice that he's got rythm in his joints and bones. He moves perfectly well with the music. Very probably the role in the movie required he be stiff like a "mean guy"... Think a bit more. It's good...
filmed at the royalty in southgate remember when they were filming it was the talk of the town as one of our mates was an xtra and got 15 quid and was telling us all about it
The scene does indeed work better with the original track- but my videos are personal interpretations This is why I call it Quadraphenia and not Quadrephenia - this track is ironic and used in justaposition to iconic, the iconic (ironic) status of a Face , thus here Sting is the antithesis of an actual face
@MojoRebel I am in juxtaposition of your spelling of justaposition. I was the drummer at a couple of high numbers gigs in Harrow in '64 - now retired and blissfully anonymous.................great post, thanx
Nah, they couldve picked a better part. Sting only got chosen because of his popularity at the time. He kind of kills the atmosphere for me, to be honest.
Sting what a COCK! Ok with the police. Grows a massive ego. Goes solo absolute shite not one good track in over 20 years! Then his ego has to give in and goes back to the police! I fucking hate him. If I saw him on the street I would be hard pushed not to abuse him! Hes definately a wanker in new york! Desert rose la de da de! The marvellous WHO sure did pick the right person to play a cunt!
Sting was a giant bee who followed the British troops to Waterloo to protect them. Later he retired to a cozy little bungalow in North Hempfordshire, just south of Twickenham. He developed his own brand of cider, and lived a peaceful life.
you're totally wrong about the dancing bruv. I was an original 60's mod and can tell you that he.s makin a pretty good job of one of the main dances of that time.
