  • what voice is this!!! Oh God!!! Lovely!!

  • Love this. Nothing else *-*

  • What a marvelous actor. I absolutely loved him in The Way We Live Now. First rate!

  • what DVD??????? i totally want it! someone message me the DVD title or a linK!

  • I love his voice but what I love more about him is his expressive eyes. I can't think of anyone else who has the most gorgeous eyes. I could stare at those baby blues day in and day out !

  • Really love this one.

  • His voice is good but not as mind-blowing as some of the other comments indicate. The video is excellent though - moving enough to bring tears to my eyes.

  • His voice is mezmerising.

  • Thank you, this has been added to our playlists here, and on face book. :)...

  • English is only my second language but with Matthew reading this poem, I understand it perfectly. Short version is that the man feels miserable when he compares himself to others who are wealthier and more successful than him, but when he thinks of the woman he loves, he feels whole and complete, that he would not even change lives with kings if he was given the chance.

  • Matthew Macfadyen is flippin hot.

  • To the person who is Japanese and would like the poem in plain English...it would be extremely hard, since it has allusions to religious themes, and Shakespear just can't be re-written, I can, however tell you what I think the poem means. He looks around...at other mens' passions, views, and endeavors...and wishes he were someone else, but a woman changes all of that, and gives him a type of re-birth where he loves who he is. Anyone else for a better translation? That's the best I could do.

  • Matthew is beyond perfection! His voice is amazing! Really, only Alan Rickman's voice is better, but then again he's not so hot as Matthew! xD I'm 17 and while my friends are drooling over Robbert Pattinson and company, I'm utterly fascinated by thos real British actors, they're like Greek gods! Matthew, Alan Rickman, COLIN FIRTH, Hugh Laurie, Hugh Dancy,...

  • I'm melting inside...I'm actually melting

  • The greatest day of my life would be when Matthew Macfadyen and Alan Rickman read to me . . .

  • my god he's painfully handsome!!! *melts*

  • that was a great sonnet

  • How can this man be so beyond the perfection of hottttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttnnnnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssss!?!?!?

  • Oh my goodness... what a voice... the best Mr Darcy in my eyes.. <3

  • Hi, I'm a Japanese. This poem sounds good but its English is Greek to me.

Will someone put it down in simple, modern English?

  • Goodness, he is so dreamy.

  • He's like Richard armitage in the sense that he's got a lovely voice and he's incredibly handsome too :) ...sigh

  • @RockMaiden1984 TOTALMENTE DE ACUERDO!!!

  • Right on! Not only the acting and the reciting, but the video and the parallel visual text is well done!

  • thats one ancient phone. :P

  • 5 people are deaf and blind.

  • Honestly, I am in love.

  • He's amazing. The voice is incredibly souful. Does anyone not love Matthew Macfadyen?

  • Excellent. Thank you for posting. I used this in my English classroom. It really helped my students comprehend the poem.

  • 48 seconds is especially powerful. I've read this sonnet over and over and over again, and I'm just about to start a 7 page essay on it. I couldn't have picked a better sonnet by shakespeare, but over 2000 words is quite a lot for a 14 line poem. Wish me luck!

  • @IIIMPULSE There are thousands of words to be written about a single line of any Shakespeare's sonnet.

  • LOL @ his laugh @ 1:03 xD OMGSH is that his wife @ 1:20 ?! @#$@#$%#%&# lol nah jks. Man she is sure lucky to see his face & hear his voice every second... :P *envy* So this DVD is about Shakespeare's poems & he's the reader ? :S

  • @GODLOVEEESYOU this is not his wife ,, its just an actress .. his wife is keeley hawes

  • this was good, dam good

  • I was feeling sorry for the man, depressed because of the state of his existence in life. Then when he mentioned his love bringing him happiness, I couldn't help but break a smile. A story so common, yet the beauty of it is so timeless. His love offering such wealth that he scorns the idea of switching his existence with that of a king. For no other existence could offer him more than the love he has found in this one, one which outweighs all the hardships in his life.

  • I agree of all saying : he's got a so wonderful voice, deep, charming and strong and with a so magical sounding that it blows me away, in addition, he got attractive eyes and artistocratic hands and most of all, he's got the talent of acting amasingly, i kinda see him like a playful young boy in a very sexy MAN's body :)) a bomb !!

  • what a voice...hooray to British accents

  • Wow! This guy could read the phonebook to me and I would be mesmorized!

  • Oh My God! This guy could read the phone book to me and I'd be in Heaven!

  • His recital is wonderful, but this video is awful. Why is that whenever we try to bring Shakespeare to a modern audience we end up pissing all over him?

  • This has always been my favorite sonnet, and to hear him recite it...bliss. There's just something in his voice, I wish he would recite more poems! I fell in love with him as Darcy, he's just so talented!

  • some thing about his eyes.....charming.. :|

  • i love his eyes.... ♥♥♥ he's one dreamy guy :)

  • I love the way his mouth looks when he says "sullen earth". YUM.

  • I may only be eighteen but I would marry him today if he asked. I mean Shakespeare, Mr. Darcy AND Hareton Earnshaw? Its unfair! No man should be so great as to play these roles AND be so handsome. He looks genuinely nice. Yep. I'd marry him.

  • I feel like I'd have a much better appreciation for poetry and Shakespeare if this video had been utilized in my high school English classroom instead of my frightening 80 year old hag of a teacher...but alas, 'twas not so.

  • dear god...

  • omg! i love him!!! ;D

  • I love this poem...i love his voice...i love his eyes...i love Matthew...i Iove...i love....

  • His voice is just so aweome haha he really really melt me and... Wow haha

  • Wow... fantastic!

  • uhh I LOVE HIS FACE... HIS LAUGH... EXCELLENT VOICE... SOUND OH MY GOD CLONE HIM

  • Would anyone know where I can find this DVD in U.S. format?

  • His voice is wonderful. <3

But I only like him with long hairs. :(

  • He says "happily I think on thee", should be haply. Two different words, two different meanings.

  • @sytunsen I thought he was indeed saying, "haply, I think on thee," but they may have been because I knew the words in advance...

  • Beautiful poem

    and

    Beautiful and Talented Matthew

  • aaaaaaaaaHHHH IM MEXICAN IM LEARNING ENGLISH FOR HIM¡¡¡ HAHAHAHA HE IS AWESOME!

  • Even if you take away the DELICIOUS voice, there is just something about his eyes...they are beautifully expressive.

  • That voice <3

  • ah, proof that the fine art of recitation has not gone by the wayside! AWESOME!

  • Love him. Love him. Love him. OOOOOOOOOO Love him. Breathe AP don't forget to breathe!

  • i just imagine , me falling sleep in his chest while his reading this poem to me!! that would be heaven!!! he is so good looking, but in his own way that makes him unique, i mean most of the actors out there , the just want to have the perfect boddies and all that, but Matthew is the all package, dangerously handsome, great actor and such a beautiful voice, ahhhhh, I wish he would play roles in the USA!!!

  • heheh .. i agree.. he is amazingly sexy and his voice is....well ... what to say...

  • he could read the london telephone book, I´d still watch this!!!

  • @xDdraigCymraeg @xDdraigCymraeg uhauhauahauhauhauhauhuh

    hahahahahaha

    You are funny!!!

  • In this, he looks like Tom Hanks in his younger days, mixed with a bit of Brendon Fraser. No one agrees?

  • I just love his voice... yup.

  • He is just so lovely... I envy Keeley Hawes!!!!

  • I've always thought that a man who likes poetry is more valuable than the most handsome man in the world.

  • wish their were more women like you in the world who valued culture and intellect than just their appearance

  • @redwolf481 Appearance....and thinking a good night out is to get pissed.

  • lol sidowse...clarify that I didn't get that..?

  • @redwolf481 Ah, I think that I may have perhaps interpreted what you said wrongly. You are refering to the 'shallowness' of a lot of women who put appearence above all else? However, it is these same women that tend to think that a good night out is just about getting drunk in night-clubs, where the music is so loud that the prospect of having a conversation with someone just isn't possible; thus any subsequent "Romantic" engagement is based purely on looks alone.

  • His voice just makes everything sound so amazing.

    love this sonnet.

  • When someone like Matthew reads Shakespeare, the poem becomes more understandable.

  • This is my favorite Shakespeare sonnet, so beautiful.

  • Oh dearest lovely Kate...I thouest theeist will meet you at the PUB...we can 'ave a lager and a crumpet.

    Cheerio...lol

  • Good lord I would listen to him recite the phone book!

  • can you imagine him as your English teacher ???? .. OMG ♥♥♥♥ I would have so much trouble "paying attention" hahahaha

  • Lol. I second that. I was actually looking through my literature book today and I saw this sonnet and I immediately thought, "I hope we listen to Matthew read this." XP

  • Ooooooooo, lovely fantasy ^^ Thanks for that :D

  • @qbanita02 I would def turn LOLITA for him.

  • @qbanita02 LOL!!! :D

  • @qbanita02 You´re so right! Gosh, I wish I was that lucky to have him as a teacher!

  • 声も瞳も大好きです

  • i'ts not a movie, it's just he reading the poem "sonet 29"

  • Can someone please tell me what movie this is?

  • this is a dramatised version of the poem you j.rk........ pay attention.

  • I've always thought that his voice was really great very masculine.

    Mathew+Skakespeare=Awesome

  • This is an amazing sonnet.. Love Shakespeare! You guys need to check out Frost and Faulkner too.

  • Dear oh dear! Try listening to that with your eyes closed on surround sound.

  • He has a great voice I love hearing Matthew recite Shakespeare.

  • what is this from???

  • I love hisss voice it kilsss

  • his voice is just to die for.

  • Matthew Macfadyen barely got to show his astounding acting skills in "Pride & Prejudice" since the role was of a rich man with an "inferior complex" so he wore the form of aloofness and quiet.(well then,I guess he played it perfect).I love all his films.

  • "Inferior complex." Ironic it's PRIDE & Prejudice. xD

  • מה זה מעינין לסבתה שלי You'd be proud to make spelling mistakes in a language not your "Mother Tongue"Your reply here is what I refer to as : "Drive-by shot 'em up verbal abuse.

  • Oh! *SWOONS*

Dear Lord, his every expression and every movement reveals the feelings... :)

Beautiful. He's just so good to look at when he gets into his role... and also when he doesn't ;)

  • Oh my effing...

I can't even begin to explain how adorable he is with short hair. And then this voice reciting that poem...*dies*

  • He captures this sonnets meaning so very well in his eyes, his lips, his voice. At the beginning you just want to give him a hug for feeling so down on himself. I know I do, and at the end you sort of smile with him :)

  • His voice makes me want to hug myself ^^

  • HIs voice makes me want to hug HIM!!

His adorable everything else.. ...well, All I can say is AMEN! or is that AHHH- MEN!!

  • lovely Matthew 한국은 안오시나요?OTL...

    소녀 한국에서 기다리겠사옵니다~

  • This was really cute; he really made the sonnet come to life.

  • is this from a movie? if so which one?

  • 1 of 3 poems read by him on the DVD called Essential Poems.

  • Shakespeare really fits to him :)

  • he has a beautiful voice...

  • On the other hand it could have been some particular incident or circumstance that trigerred this poem, but when was Shakespeare ever " in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes",

and in an " outcast state"?

  • in shakespeare's day I've heard that his work was considered vulgar. He was so much ahead of his time and people thought his works too violent and too sexual.

  • You may be right to some extent, but I don't know if those who thought him vulgar weren't a bit jealous, as his work was popular. Ben Johnson (another distinguished playwright) paid great tribute to him and his work after he died, though he was not so complimentary during his lifetime. They were rivals. It was also a violent and sexual age. There were other more violent playwrights at the time, such as John Webster and Thomas Kydd, and Marlowe's work also contains sexual material and violence.

  • You also have to separate the narrator from the author sometimes.

  • Shakespeare's poems are thought to be about himself, but then some people believe that Shakespeare was not the real author of the poems or plays. if that were true it's not clear who they are about, leaving much room for speculation.

  • ok this is awesome but if he was in character as mr darcy itd be even better lol gotta agree

  • jesus.. what a man!

  • I WANT HIM!!!!!!

  • I see a lot of myself in Mathew (though me without an inch of his talent!).Does anyone know the name of this familiar music?Sounds like something from Moby,no?

  • I could listen to him read the phonebook. His voice is unbelievable.

On a side note, he looks like he could be Lee Pace's older brother :)

  • Lol, nice comment and yes I could close my eyes and listen to him read the phonepbook too...:-))

And yes, I also noticed they look and sound similar to Lee Pace..

  • This man can act anything. There's something so telling in his eyes and vulnerable when he's doing the poems. He also has showed it in everything he's done. They could probably just put a camera on his eyes and have him recite anything and you could feel the expression. Beautiful :D

  • He makes me crazy. Great actor and gorgeous. Matthew's voice is amazing. He's a superstar.

  • I think im going to have to go to london and get a boy with an accent like him to marry!!

  • OMG i think i just came..JOKESJOKES! Hes so shmexii!

  • You think? I know LOL!

  • this man has a voice... omg

  • Gorgeous and sexy...

  • He could read the phonebook and make it sound sexy! LOL!

  • He is the most perfect man on Earth :D

I love his voice and smile and amazing eyes :D

    And surely Mr Darcy...:D

  • Isn't he the most perfect man on Earth? I can close my eyes and hear his voice...mmmmmmmmm i'm dreaming.. thanx, Mat!

  • Well done, he's a brilliant actor. I like the moment he looks at his phone and remembers her and all else fades away. Shakespeare was the greatest writer that ever lived. Putting it in a modern context is really interesting too.

  • Just a word: Gorgeous!! Shakespeare & Macfadyen are an astonishing recipe. THX!!!!

  • Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,

    Haply I think on thee,--and then my state (Like to the lark at break of day arising From sullen earth) sings hymns at heaven's gate;

For thy sweet love remember'd such wealth brings

That then I scorn to change my state with kings'.

  • When in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes,

I all alone beweep my outcast state,

And trouble deaf Heaven with my bootless cries,

And look upon myself, and curse my fate,

Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,

Featur'd like him, like him with friends possess'd,

Desiring this man's art, and that man's scope,

With what I most enjoy contented least:

  • Unexpected but special. Accents differ from what I imagined, but it made listen again and again. After all, I like it.

  • i love his eyes especially in Pride and Prejudice! yay Mathew!!!

  • i just loooooooov the way he speaks =D

  • Beautiful....Mr. Darcy....I love you!

  • What a wonderful voice he has. I really admire him.

  • this poem states dissapointmnet and how little you might feel......in this vast place

  • His Voice^^

    This man is amazing^^

  • Matthew's voice is absolutely amazing! Rich, warm, velvety, and just plain delicious! he needs to read more poems! Pronto!

  • This is amazing. I love how eloquently he read that poem. By the way, Sonnet 29 is amazing.

  • Very good. VERY good. Thanks, frklinee.

  • My God! I cannot find the words to express how that deep and beautiful voice touches my heart and makes my soul vibrates... I adore Matthew!! He is so ... WOW!

  • Oh, this gorgeous man and his amazing voice! He is absolutely beyond compare!!!

  • I have watched a lot of videos of him reciting poems and I love his voice and all that (OMG i just get lost in it lol) but I don't get why he is reciting poems. Can someone tell me?

  • because he does it so well and not everyone can do it..just enjoy..

  • I don't get it either.. I mean lord knows he does it like no other but what for? Where are the clips from? Some series or what? Anyway, thanks for posting this.. I too have watched a lot of em and this one is really precious! He's beautiful..

  • The best programme the BBC ever did

  • that's stunning. it really touched me for some reason.

  • yeah I know exactly what you mean..

  • His voice is just completely beyond comparison!! I absolutely adore it... lol I would do anything have him recite a poem for me *sigh*

  • how beautiful voice

  • help me....OH GAHD..Just read the menu, and whisper sweet nothings in my ear...THAT VOICE will undo me, I am a cheap blonde FOR MATTHEW.LOL

  • Mmmmmm... just close your eyes... and breathe him in...

  • Does anyone the title of the song, in the background? By the way, I love his laugh and little scoffish noise at 1:05.

  • Beautiful man, poem, background song...voice and so much more. I wish I could see this movie...and hear even more poems recited by Matthew in that soothing voice.

  • The eyes have it!

  • so pure
