Fantastic, fantastic! Caballe really lets fly here, actually singing all the words and adding the necessary bite in her attack. An added high D (a note she had) would have made it perfect. Bianca Berini is really outstanding, the whip, the ageing caked face, the contempt she shows, wow superlatives fail me. Only the Gencer/Verrett Florence 1967 can possible compare or surpass this dramatic intensity. Doesn this exist on DVD? Please?

I've never seen this! Caballe's Stuarda is not convincing and although beautifully sung (as she is a bel canto specialist) she is dramatically weak. She is not in character at all. She could easily be queenly in other roles but here she's just boring and unappealing. The Confrontation Scene wasn't anything special and yeah it was hilarious how she insults Queen Elisabeth then gives her an "innocent lamb" look LOL

Wonderful! I like her hand position while denouncing Elisabetta between 6:29 and 6:45! Same for the high C at 5:27 - majestic! Pity she sang a high D only in 1979 in that scene, it would have been a great finish here. But lets forget that and ENJOY!

I love this scene from Maria Stuarda and when done right - that is 2 great sopranos singing almost against each other in a duel - the results are spectacular...Caballe is always a gorgeous singer whose voice possessed regal power...great video

Che dire, grande temperamento a parte la buona tenuta vocale, ma i toni e i pianti della Caballè sono da sceneggiata napoletana, fa ridere, due regine anche se s'insultano è un po' difficile immaginare che lo facciano così...

Though Caballe as a rather statuesque actress, she sings better than she acts, but this Scene is really extraordinary. Two tudor queens in flesh and blood!Even little gestures and facial expression (esp. Caballe!) say more than words....extraordinary!

Mai usare gli assoluti!!La Devia, poveretta,fà quello che può ,con la sua vocina da lirico leggero-Canta ben issimo , per carità ma lo spessore dichiesto dalla Stuarda è ben altra cosa-Vada la signorina Devia a vedere ed ascoltare questo Video e poi forse comprenderà.E non dite che è la sua lettura...nò ,la Stuarda ha un'orchestrazione PESANTE che richiede un Drammatico !

Se vogliamo altri Video con Bianca Berini credo dovremmo rivolgerci alla Caballè,che ha molto cantato con Bianca! Ho conosciuto Bianca Berini e ho avuto il privilegio di esserLe Amica sino agli ultimi , tristi giorni della Sua vita-Grande Cantante e grande Artista,ricordo i suoi meravigliosi Don Carlo (Eboli) alla Scala e la Sua Amneris in Arena di Verona...l'unica che poteva far paura alla Cossoto dei giorni migliori e forse le era anche superiore!Negli ultimi anni,ingiustamente dimenticata e sfortunata nella Vita privata,abitava a Milano.Grande ,grande Bianca,ti abbiamo voluto tanto bene,riposa in pace!!!

Cool, thanks. Oh, to have a magic wand that would replace some mezzos on some reordings and replace them with this lady-- I can think of a 'Don Carlo' or two that would have benefitted from Ms. Berini's presence.

If nothing else, I'm glad YouTube is giving a little noteriety to singers who obviously deserved much more.

Berini was seldom appreciated -- one of the most exciting, old-fashioned gutsy mezzos of our time, last of a noble breed. Her Elisabeth is the perfect contrast to Caballe's, in voice and acting as well as style. Terrific pairing.

Caballe is along with Janet Baker the two greatest Stuardas I have heard singing the very heart of the this middle-voiced Donizzeti role without the unbelievably stupid coloratura that canary birds (Sills, Gruberova) spoiled this magnificent role with.
