UH Live 1973, one of the best live albums of all time along with Slade Alive : Slade, Frampton Comes Alive : Peter Frampton, Live and Dangerous : Thin Lizzy and Strangers in the Night : UFO. Thanks for posting.
when i was a freshman and sophomore in hi school, 72-73, it was sabbath, heep, and deep purple all the time. now sometimes i listen back to this old stuff and the outstanding thing i hear is Gary Thain's bass playing. the man was a kickass bass player. i wish somebody would publish a "best of gary thain" tab book so i could cop some of his licks.
I love Heep -I think what threw off the masses to Uriah Heep was the heavy synthesizer/vocal harmony structure which was a popular style at the time. As a musician I loved it then and now, but it was too specific to a target audience and lacked commercial appeal, which doesn't say much for the intellect of the human race when considered as a whole - we're better of as individual thinkers. No, I'm not having a flashback. Just a rare moment of clarity. The right music can do that to you.
This, along with "Made In Japan" got hours and hours of play time in the cassette deck of my '67 camaro. Saw them live at Kiel Auditorium St. Louis later in '73. Powerful!
but they were doing a different kinda music they were good as a matter a fact kieth emmerson was the best key bord.but i like a guitar allways have i wish i could playbut the best concert was pink floyd doing the dark side tour i got to see them and they really put on a show
Gary Thain was a virtuoso on the Fender Jazz bass---one of the best EVER!!! Right up there with the Ox, Geddy, and C. F. Turner!! I always loved Gary's playing, and especially on the double live record!!RIP, Gary Thain.............
Had their own sound, look, and energy going on. Remember this and Easy Living from FM radio in the days of '73-77. I once whipped out a decent harp break to Easy Living while on my father's roof - rebuilding it summer of '96. Hadn't heard the song then in almost 20 years, but it came back to me like a soul tattoo. Funny how radio can do that to you with a great song - the first time you heard it, and then hearing it years - and much further down the road - later. Rock On Dudes
Now that's what I'm talking about. Not only could bands reproduce their music live back then, they could do it with the sort of power and ability you can hear in this recording. I loved this album back then and I still can't stop smiling listening to it today.
Anyway an absolute superb band, fantastic gigs, cant believe that theres film footage from Europe, USA and Japan but NO footage of this tour, at this time Uriah Heep were at the very TOP of their game.
Gary Thain was one of the best rock bassists ever and contributed hugely to Uriah Heep's sound. Sadly both he and the dynamic David Byron had very short lives.
This is definitely my favorite song from one of my favorite Live albums!
Mention Uriah Heep to someone and they'll inevitably say, "Oh wow man, I haven't thought of them in years." It's a shame that they've gone the route of the forgotten greats, for they truly were one of the greats.
I had the great fortune to see Heep in 1974 at the Allentown (PA) Fairgrounds. Openers were Earth, Wind & Fire and ZZ Top. Truly an awesome show!
Also, the LOUDEST band I've ever had the opportunity to see!
Agree with ScudoBR's comments about Heep live and Purple Live. The BEST live recordings of their time. I still cannot believe how Gary Thain tears it up on bass. Too bad he and Byron are gone.
@ScudoBR I agree. This is my all time favorite live album, and Made In Japan my second. Uriah Heep was my 1st concert ever. Saw them in Albuquerque NM exactly 1yr after the live album was recorded.
You're lucky... I can imagine your excitement that time to have the chance to enjoy UH live on top of their career... mainly as your 1st concert. Lucky :)
@Ingleburt Sorry to say, but they were not underrated at all... But without David Byron things changed a bit (or: a lot) and they never reached that same level...
@zeroieperdepiep Sorry to say to you, but they WERE underrated. NEVER got the proper praise at all. Now if you are old as I am, 54, maybe we can talk. However, David Byron was brilliant. And yes, he could never be replaced. This band was underrated. Period.
You are so right. Saw them live with this line-up quite a few times and they were always fantastic. One of the best rock bands ever....so underrated!!
@Ingleburt "Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an INVISIBLE GOVERNMENT owing NO allegiance and acknowledging NO responsibility to the people. To destroy this invisible government, to befoul this unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of today." PRESIDENT THEODORE ROOSEVELT, 1906
@Ingleburt "The minority, the ruling class at present, has the schools and press, usually the Church as well, under its thumb. This enables it to organize and sway the emotions of the masses, and make its tool of them."
~ Albert Einstein, letter to Sigmund Freud, 30 July 1932
@Ingleburt This passage is from The incredible marquis by Herbert Gorman entitled the soldier of fortune(chapter six) It was natural that Dumas believed implicitly in the magic of somnambulism, in animal magnetism and in chiromancy. No Haitian negro dancing before his Voodoo altar was more superstitious than Dumas. Home, to Dumas, therefore, was an authentically inspired adept in communicating with unseen world.
@Ingleburt Have we succeeded? We think so. Before long we shall have covered with our narratives an enormous period of time; between the "Comtesse de Salisbury' and the "Comte de Monte Christo" five centuries and a half are compresed. Well, we assert that we have taught France as much history about those five centuries and a half as any historian. This passage is from The Companions of Jehu which was written by Alexandre Dumas pere.
Music is timeless and is the universal language. There is no age when it comes to music because it comes to us out of the ether. The songs we love, that touch us all start in someone's noodle then become the timeless classics that mark the milestones of our lives.
@kmorrma ......hey, dont be afraid of your age. I'm 54. Young people can learn from us, if they want to. Of course most of them have their heads up their asses...I said most, not all. Hey, we were there, not them! I saw the Beatles, the greatest band in HISTORY in 1964!
Outstanding band lineup!! Surely one of the best bands of the 70s. Gary Thain bass work is superb, very akin of John Paul Jones. David Byron to me was THE 70s frontman. Mick Box is very competent and Kerslake could outdo Bonham in his own business. And Ian was the brain behind the business. A very understated and trouble thorn band, but... I still miss old Heep!!!
I had this original 72 album, until last summer, when i left it outside for about 10 minutes. I had been sorting old albums, and ended up with 4 casualties. Never leave your albums in the sun, even for a short time. Great song, and thanks for posting it live.
The world should have ended in the 70s, best age EVER. :)
