A week later, Obede Loyola Souza was shot dead - in Pará. And on July 24, rural farmer Francisco Oliveira Soares was murdered in what police ruled was a conflict over land rights. Guess in which state?
On May 27, land rights activist Adelino Ramos was killed in Rondonia. The next day, Eremilton dos Santos, a possible witness to Da Silva's death, was murdered in Pará.
On June 1, the day IBAMA approved Belo Monte’s construction, Joao Vieira dos Santos (alias Marcos Gomes da Silva), another Pará forest activist, was killed.
On May 26, Brazil’s Senate approved changes to the Forest Code that rolled back forest protections in place since 1965. The rural bloc of cattle ranchers and farmers, a stronghold in Pará, wields much power in Congress. Less than 24 hours later, forest activist José Claudio Ribeiro da Silva and his wife, Maria Elena do Espírito Santo, were murdered in Marabá, Pará, their ears cut off as a mark of execution. This began a chain of killings that has continued unabated and unpunished:
These murders in Brazil are nothing new, since I've been aware non whites have been killed with impunity! when the White ppl came there untold millions of African slaves & native peoples have been murdered an unending Holocaust at the hands of white devils in the name of sugar coffee coca & now its forest lumber whites only are concerned now?? I remember stories of street kids been killed by off duty Cops in the since the 80's!
It is a great crime!
Es freut mich, dass der Enkel von J.Y. Cousteau sich hier unten im Forum (@fcnamad) zu Wort gemeldet hat.
Es ist bezeichnend, dass diese Morde in den Medien fast keine Beachtung finden.
An amazing man! He first did the logistics for my Grandfather J.Y. Cousteau, his crew of the Calypso in the Brazilian Amazon in 1980-82. I had a chance to meet him again in 2007 for our follow up Amazon expedition with my father J.M. Cousteau and the Ocean Futures team for PBS. Mr. Ribeiro was truly amazing individual, a life long champion for the rainforest and for future of our children. Mr. Ribeiro you will truly be missed and I hope your message and spirit will be carried forth by us all. FC
It is such a shame for us Brazilians get to know that each passing day more and more people have been killed for these landowners which are the trash of our society. Justice must be done! that is what we Brazilians deserve.
Politics come and ask us for our votes saying that things will be different from now on, "BULLSHITTT"!
I am deeply saddened here in Central Hawke's Bay, NZ to hear of your death and that of your wife Maria do Espírito Santo too. Your message will live on here. Thank you so very much for your life's work, beloved friend of the rainforest. R.I.P.
But realize that it's not necessarily the people's fault, it's MONEY. What's worse, is that EVERYONE will make the excuse that it is NOT the case, but why else would he be killed? He was for preservation & what caused the problem of taking that away were these loggers, these CORPORATIONs & this man stood in their way. Logically these corps need to resolve that issue so it was easier to take Zé out of the picture, & that's what they did.
My heart goes out to his family. He was murdered for the work he was passionate about and is a marytr for the Mother Earth for which he tried to protect.
@modasemfrescura don't be ashamed. rather, stand with him and defend the forests. Be proud that there IS someone like him doing what's right - and be even prouder that you are doing what you believe is right!
Note - I'm not talking about him though, his bravery is immense and he died a very sad example of how little we care about each other as world communities!

Let's make his killing worth MORE than the money the fiends that ordered or profited his & his wife deaths.
I had never heard of him, the organisation or taken interest in the struggle before hearing about this crime.
I hope the this event does MORE good for the cause and DAMAGE the illegal and WRONG trade the opposite of what these killings intended.
RiP soldier. Be with the Forest and protect it in another spiritual form because yours will live on.
