  • ordo ab chao! the governments create the chaos so they can be the saviour and bring the order they want. until people realize this they will not understand anything. create horrible criminals and help them along so they can make people scream for their own enslavement. this guy is only telling half of the truths. if he was really telling secrets he would have been taken out. do you think madoff could have pulled off his scam by himself? yet he was the only one implicated.

  • the only problem with what this guy is saying about regulations for off shore banking is how would we even get the people who run the world to put in regulations that would keep them from committing the crimes they commit. this goes all the way to the top my friends.everyone has their pockets lined with dirty money. he is for cyber regulations because he works for the bad guys. our own government is involved with the viruses to make people cry for them to regulate the internet.

  • You had me til you started looking down on the marijuana trade.

  • haha legalize the drugs? you think getting rid of drugs will get rid of violence? they still need to get their paper, if its not drugs it will just be something else

  • This man is going to get shot in the forehead by some shady sniper one of these days if he spreads any more insight into global crime.

  • misha glenny.. what a f*cking joke, this clown say greeks slaughtered the turks at the turkish invasion in greece at 1821 and nowadays oftenly come to greece to help greece solve national matters..

  • My uncle was in Berlin as a captain in the british army doing the time the wall fell. He brought all his brothers and sisters a piece of it back. Loads of fist sized jagged pieces of rubbish made concrete with graffiti on the flat bits.

  • what software does he use for his maps ?

  • @gohjj122 that would be good to know, its pretty sick, be nice for putting in powerpoints and stuff

  • Well good picture with the mafiots guys. Unfortunatelly gypsies mafiot groups are very active in Bulgaria, Romania, Italy and Spain beeing the main group to trafficate children.

  • Um, how interesting that he doesn't mention the organized crime in govt, or that the drug related criminal violence could be greatly reduced by legalizing then regulating the drugs. Or that the federal reserve is in of itself a criminal entity, in the USA. Or the organized crime that is perpetuated by the international bankers.

  • great talk, thank you Mr. Glenny

  • i second that.

  • Excellent talk, very useful.

    Thanks TED!

  • @Lekozza yeah, it is great. and i dont know why, but he reminds me poker player Tony G :D and his book mcmafia is great

  • What a statist thug Misha Glenny is. The government IS organized crime, and he supports their every whim and dictate.

Ohhh, they are losing billions on unpaid cigarette extortion money. Quit supporting the biggest gang of criminals, Misha.

  • I love these videos.. damn i wish i found them a long time ago..

  • why

  • so the danger is the evolution of the production sites from the third world, to Japan, USA, & EU. Particularly because our police force is ill equiped to respond the criminals.

  • The organize crime are governments, bankers and big corporations.

They are the one that supply the small organize crime.

  • Not sure i see what your getting at..

  • I rather feel his statement is very clear

  • Can you tell Misha Glenny to stop throwing the word Slav in front of Macedonians? I wouldn't call you a Shit Faced Brit. Ignorant asshole.

  • what do u mean

  • I'm Macedonian. I just hate when someone says Ethnic Slav Macedonians. I feel like it's a left jab or cheap shot etc.. To be honest, I don't really care. I think I was smoking weed when I saw this. I think if the world would just leave us Macedonians alone, it would be boring and we would have nothing to bitch about! So continue Misha Glenny, your doing a great job. You Wasp!

  • lol

btw i dont even get the term ethnic - slav , but what do u consider urself to be

  • lol It would be like saying Latin Mexicans or Anglo Saxon English. I think when they use Slav or Slavic, they use it in a derogatory way. Which is fine if it's used with comedy. I love racial humor and stereotypes. But Misha isn't funny! I guess Slavs are Russian, Ukrainian, Serbs, Croatians?

  • yeah, russian, bulgarian and i think macedonian people too, no?

Not sure, but was what i always thought, and i certainly dont see it as derogatory. Using the combination of ethnic - slavs might be, but slav in itself ...

  • But with Macedonia it's a whole other meaning. A lot of countries are bed buddies with Greece. Greece says Macedonia is Greek. People like Mishka (means armpit in Macedonian) when they say Ethnic Slav Macedonians, usually do so because that's what the Greeks taught them. I don't know. I care enough to smack a guy when he calls me a Greek. lol Other then that, just call us Macedonia or Macedonian. Know what I mean?

  • Well , fuck the greek then, and no ,macedonians aren't greek, macedonians are macedonian and the land you live on is bulgarian , read some history books man. But yeah , i see what you mean , middle aged people in macedonia are really intense when it comes to national identity, i can see that. peace.

  • lol See what i mean? You had to throw in a left hook. Bulgarian land? The land is just land, it's my land. Right now, I'm in Chicago. I'm calling it my land. Peace out! Can't get into this anymore. I end internet convos when someone insults me. In real life I punch. Peace out!!!

  • ahhh , now now, Don't be insulted. It's an arguement, and it's truth, one truth. But i guess you're right, maybe we're both arguing for the wrong causes. If Bulgarians should feel any frustration or irritation about someones actions in a broader historical view it is the greek, the serbs, romanians and turks. So Peace out then.

    Wigga.

  • perhaps 15% of the GDP but unlike 'normal' and taxed economics not controlled by a few white-collar gangsters. .

  • Have tried to post a link to an op-ed in the NY-times written by Misha Glenny in which he writes about his views on prohibition and the war on drugs. It won´t work however, so I can just recommend you to do a search on their website. The article, like the talk, is informative, well written and courageous.

  • Don't support criminal basterds, don't buy there drugs, purchase there wimen, purchase there shares, dont gamble, stay indores when its dark, dont take any drugs, and you'll starve these criminals out.

  • dont gamble?

  • ted is becoming such a NWO talk-show..

all this talk about "crime" and empowering the global police, and not a word about ending this stupid prohibition.

  • Yes, the criminals to him are those that are supplying goods and services that the true criminals (those calling themselves the government) are trying to stop.

  • Milton fridman said before he won a nobel prize for economy that The purpose of the government is to sustain the drug Cartels.

Question. Who is greatest arms dealer world?

    The USA federal government.

    Look, Terrorists!

  • Russian mafia is not Russian ethnically. Most of them are either Jews or Caucas ethnicities.

  • Does it matter what their ethnicity is? They operate from within Russia never the less...

  • Well it does matter mate.

    Think about it.

  • Domestically perhaps, but for the rest of the world - not at all. Russian maffia has to be treated as a problem originating from Russia, acting from and within Russia.

If we stopped using cash these people would have a hard time doing buisness with anyone. I sure wouldn't mind.

  • Crime always finds a way.

But what i meant is, it's a tool. In politics and war this could be implicated as state affairs.

    2 words: world war?

  • A definite eye opening TED Talk.

  • They should label the money. Fuck this free market globalization crap!

It's not "free capital" if it comes from a country where nobody's free, it's a corrupting force and cancer of the world.

When Russian/Saudi/Latin American millions go into pockets of European/American politicians and CEO's, they should have the "dirt" on it and be unethical/outlawed to accept.

  • Like I believe Gerhard Schröder works for Gazprom now, while in office, he killed the united European gas purchasing strategy and advocated for the Russian pipeline (instead of Caspian)

Bush was financed all his life by Saudis.

Until we allow shit like that, mafias are gonna thrive!!!

  • agreed.

and people that are weak enough to use drugs and so on should be disposed of :/

  • Easy solution for all this shit: legalize the drugs.

  • That is not an end all solution. It wouldn't stop the other corporate corruption scams in government. It's not all about drugs.

  • Drug sales produce enough money to stage coup.

  • Word

  • whew

  • legalise the naturals, pot, mushrooms, mescaline; medicines that dont kill people...

  • Every medicine has side effects. It is stupid to take a medicine which can whack you head for some moments of pleasure.

  • What they need to do is legalize high that outstrips heroin and cocaine - I'm confident with enough dabbling, the chemists and neuro-scientists could work that one out - so you can have a great evening and get to work in the morning - cheap, easy to produce, regulated and safe.

People are ALWAYS gonna want narcotics because life - for most - is shit. It's stressful, dissapointing and depressing (especially with terrorism, climate change, swine flu, financial collapse etc). Get to it drug-makers.

  • Dude, 15% is INSANE.

  • criminals are very moraly week people, they can't posably feel good about themselves.

  • Absolutely no legalising of criminal activity.

  • I'm not sure what I got out of these 20 minutes. He offers no solutions. What can normal people do to fight against global crime networks?

  • It's more about realizing what is going on than a invitation to help and "change" something.

It's informative, and gives you food for thought.

  • Simple, ask yourself where criminals get there money its obvious - internet scams - illegal drugs - brothels - stolen goods - share market, dont support these basterds by purchasing there goods, this can only be fort and won by the people.

  • Global crime networks are bigger than you think. All one has to do is study national monetary policies (including the us federal reserve) to figure out how corrupt things really are.

  • Legalize or decriminalize drugs and prostitution. That will cut of the major sources of income for these scumbags.

The answer is NOT more police or resources to fight them. That will never solve the underlying problem or even make a dent. Ever.

People wanna get high and fuck. Always have and always will. The government needs to back the fuck off and stop criminalizing it. You might as well criminalize red meat or coca-cola.

  • The reason drugs are banned is it increases petty theft, aggression, and unemployment etc. But criminalizing it does the same thing also. So why not let druggies do drugs somewhere, where they wouldn't trouble civilization. And why not let murderers murder each other somewhere..

  • Use this to see what happens when you decriminalize all drugs: watch?v=8HpW7GY2KHQ

Portugal did it and overall use has dropped 10%. It's still illegal to sell drugs, but users are not criminalized. As a result many went and got help offered by the govt. to stop their own drug use.

  • Are you retarded? You do know the only reason drug's cost so much, and the reason theft and aggression is related to the drug industry is BECAUSE its illegal. Since it's illegal, the price isn't regulated, the quality isn't regulated, and the government spends vast amounts of resources trying to combat it vs taxing it and putting stipulations against it such as alcohol has. Do some research, use some logic, and please try and make sense....please.

  • The Government doesn't wan't to stop it, they could easily.

  • Yeah ,the point in it being illegal is there's more MONEY to be made by both the governments and the petty mafia that way, and let's just say it out loud - it's MAFIA either way and all around.

  • funny and true. thumbs up to this comment from truthordeath. :)

  • Don't purchase drugs, or take a whore, do not support these basterds.

  • Legalise both and we wont have to.

  • Hang on just a second, lets not forget that taking drugs is bad, and taking illegal drugs is a criminal act. And that stands true. Im shure that anyone in power ( political western ) would not support criminals and drugs. If this isn't the case just print it out.

  • how to fix it: legalize

    very simple

    do the right thing, idiots

  • There are too many vested interests that do not want change. The crooks don't want legalization, because they would be out of business. The cops don't want it because there would be less call for cops. The prison guard unions don't want it, because there would be less work for them. And the politicians don't want it, because these vested interests wouldn't be giving them the 'donations' otherwise. And the people simply don't count in the eyes of those in power. The people do as they are told.

  • agreed 100%, great message. we need somebody to lead and penetrate and destroy the whole "system" ,otherwise it's all TALK, just talk like all the politicians and criminals, it doesnt mean anything

  • There are so many things that are wrong with what you just said i cant even begin to explain..

  • ahm

  • REGULATION IS WHAT BROUGHT US HERE. WE NEED TO GET RID OF REGULATION TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM NOT PROMOTE MORE REGULATION! once organized crime will not have so much money from drugs and prostitution they will not be so widespread in other areas.

  • This guy sucks.

How about legalizing drugs and lowering the tax on tobacco instead?

  • I'm sure anyone who's ever OD'ed will agree with you. Oh wait, they're all dead.

  • eh no they're not

  • Microbial drug resistance scares the hell out of me. That's a serious problem.

  • The picture with the three men wearing gold chains is actually from Romania

  • There are some bloody evil people inthe world, and in some way, wether we like it or not, we are all involved or have had some involvement with organised crime.

There has and most likely allways will be a blackmarket.

  • Brilliant.

  • this is brilliant

  • Backbone, the world needs backbone.

  • Test

  • And all the killing and crime would go away the moment the western world stops enforcing their prohibitions of various demanded goods and services. Just like it did with alcohole.

  • wow that is a dumb statement.

  • really? sure, "crime" by definition would go away if you made everything legal, but injustice and evil will continue to exist as long as people have dark hearts.

  • My heart is a lovely shade of pink.

  • Very interesting view into the situation. Living in Canada I see on the news small and medium grow-ops getting busted, sometimes by informants, sometimes by accident. They tend to occupy houses in residential areas where people aren't suspicious of neighbors that don't talk much. But there are many of them. Others are located in the wilderness and Canada has lots of that. Coupled with a low population of citizens and law enforcement, Canada is a great place for criminals.

  • Doesn't sound like this man is for legalization of cannabis.

  • Not biased in any way

  • We pay taxes ( wether we work or not ) although it is not all a one way street. In resurn we expect food, shelter, work and protection from criminals and there drugs etc. I could go out and become a criminal and make money but i wont because ive got caracter pribe and backbone. criminals have no respect

  • Test

  • Mental health care facilities were closed & torn down. All of this making the USA a nation of "criminals", nuts & addicts, whose "treatment" choice is a substitute addiction, or a cot & an orange jumpsuit. Profitable prisons, churches, & addiction "treatment facilities" are full of the untreated mentally ill. People gun each other down in the streets, gambling that they can get a piece of the action in something that's not even supposed to exist.

It's time to ask ourselves the real reasons why.

  • As mental health care was shelved, orgs that promote brain parasites like F-Christianity, creationism, Scientology etc, were quietly funded. Pharma transmuted the head shrinking industry to quack prescription writers. Prohibition of unregulated substances created a new criminal class, who could not seek treatment for their addictions, because they would go to prison. The brainwashing industry was delighted to get buts into their pews, & $ into their offerings.

  • Follow the money trail. Observe the correlations between the wealth & power of the incarceration industry, the erosion of K-12 education quality, the so-called war on drugs, the strangulation and dissolution of public mental health care, transferring addiction treatment to medical industries, & faith based brainwashers, & babysitting of would-be mental/addiction patients & all other non-conformists to prisons.

  • I'm surprised that none have mentioned an oft overlooked crime syndicate, that is just short of the carbon & pharma/insurance industries, in employing the lobbying industry to corrupt all federal legislation, & the media in anti-rational propaganda; the USA's privately owned prison industry. Laws are made & dissolved by their command, primarily criminalizing as much as is possible, & setting sentencing guidelines, all for their bottom line.

  • Well then legalize marijuana already!

  • I like how he says "Mafia".

  • 15%? wow...

  • if they were to decriminalise drugs and prostitution the crimials would be out of business....there is more money to be made keeping it illegal......

  • perhaps it is more effective to educate people around the world than cach and blame them?

  • This sounds like a sales pitch for international regulation which will, undoubtedly, put more power in the hands of the very people who have caused the destructive debt, the treasonous bankers and their owners.

The government has nothing to fear from criminals. That's why they are allowed to run rampant. It's citizens that the Gov fears and crime helps keep decent people indoors.

  • what was the point of this ,m.x

  • The anecdote about coltan is misleading. Yes, 80% of coltan comes from DRC but coltan is only one of the many ores of Tantalum, the element that is actually used in electronics. The United States Geological Survey reports in its 2006 yearbook that DRC produced a little less than 1% of the worlds Tantalum. Australia is the largest producer of Tantalum.

  • thankyou. I (and i'm sure others too) wouldn't have known that otherwise, and would have otherwise come away from this talk harboring an incorrect correlation.

  • Only a tiny fraction of the people who saw this will read my comment. And the anecdote is repeated in his book. Everyone is going to be full of western guilt over fueling the war in the DRC with their laptops. :(

  • In the "Sarah Conner Chronicles", the terminators are made from "a coltan alloy".

Just sayin, one of those funny connections.

  • I always knew the collapse of communism had a terrible fallout, but this....

  • I am from Croatia!

    (former Yugoslavian Republic)

When war started, group of people who know people in goverment start seling cigarets, arms, ammunition, people...

Today we fell konsekvens of that peoples "mestakes"!

Coruption is 150% in Croatia...no one whant to invest money in Croatia, cose they know that they must pay to some "jack ass" too get promition too built or start buissnes!!

They pay to goverment too protect them, they have police and courts!!

  • very nice, i hope to see this types of activities also regarding political corruption networks

  • Best TED talk in a LONG time :)

  • Agree. Been a lot of dross recently.

  • Comment removed

  • Bibles are a deadly narcotic, have killed billions in countless religious wars, and hopelessly enslave the minds of it's users.

    Worse

    Than

    Any

    Drug

  • NO U

  • Test

  • Congratulations, you just had a direct connection with god.

  • If you want to eliminate global crime the best way to start is to prevent western government agencies from participating in it.

  • The only true free market is the black market.

The only true black market is the free market.

what if they are both true?

  • great speaker

  • legalize drugs and you legitimize the gangster.

  • huh?

Gangsters only exist because of prohibition.

  • and crime only exists because specific acts are illegal...

  • ...so true....

  • No thinking person can continue to support the war on drugs. It's bad policy. Bad economics. Bad morality.

  • Come on Chelsea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

  • I recommend reading Murray Rothbard's essay, "The Anatomy of the State," so you can see why governments themselves -- without exception -- are a form of organized crime, by any rigorous definition of crime. You can find it free on the internet with a simple search, or it's also available in book form. (This comment isn't meant as an indictment of every person in government; it's a call for a philosophical paradigm change.)

  • I agree, i may well read that, at the moment Im reading another book recommended to me called the starfish and the spider.

What i would call a crime is immoral actions. Governments in particular think that they can rationalise immorality, this puts them in the position of sociopaths and it is why any democratic system is corrupted.

  • Great vid, TED rules :)

  • Heroin is illigal for good reason.

It causes massive (social and personal)damage. Just chat to a drugs worker.

However, recent research showed tobacco to be only slightly less damaging when compared with other illicit substances. Who knows, maybe that too will be illigal in the future.

  • The same can be said about "living"... it has a 100% death rate so far and also "causes massive (social and personal)damage" and I would be tempted to say that in some circumstances, it does more damage.

  • if you make tobacco illegal then there will be LOTS people very angry with you and alot of economic hardship and lots of civil wars i think

    more laws - more problems

  • Do you think it would be more effective to continue the war on drugs or legalize drugs and use the billions we spend on the drug war on rehabilitation centers and drug treatment centers?

  • Legalization is not the answer, decriminalization is.

  • Mostly correct. Besides if people wanna buy AIDS medication from their local gang then their a moron.

  • Why

  • An excellent video with information that we should all already have access to.

  • If drugs were legal then anybody could sell them and there would not be necessity of killing people to keep your business going. Making drugs illegal is like people admitting that they are too stupid not to take them and get addicted. Just like prohibition of alcohol in 1920's. Prostitution is not a problem itself. Problem is when people are forced to do it and making it illegal connects prostitution with people who kidnap and kill people.

  • just sounds like fear mongering....the battle is lost within the castle...

  • You sound like a weak little idiot who doesn't like the sound of the truth.

  • YouKnowWhereThisEnds:

you have no rebuttal?? Epic FAIL...CHECK MATE.

  • using words like rebuttal makes you sound smart

arguing within youtube comments makes you sound even more smart

    good luck with life...lol.

  • You're not worth my time little boy.

Go play with your building blocks child.

  • YouKnowWhereThisEnds:

    ..still waiting for a response.....FAIL>>>CHECKMATE>

  • ALL DRUGS--yes, even cocaine and heroin--were legal essentially EVERYWHERE a hundred years ago. HOW did people ever survive!?!?!

Furthermore, even when Americans WEREN'T AWARE that cocaine and heroin were addictive--still only about <5% of people became addicted. When people DID realize they were addictive, rates of use dropped dramatically.

Apparently, modern people are somehow DIFFERENT than they were for the last 100,000 years--it's only in the last 100 years that drugs are illegal.

  • GetMeThere1,

Stop saying those things, theor heads will explode!

  • I think we all know what the Coltan is really used for...

  • This guy is simply a shill for government.

Legalize drugs. Simple, end of problem. Legalize prostitution, and have regulation: disease and human trafficking go WAY down.

Prohibition over drugs and prostitution is one person (or group, like religions) trying to impose THEIR arbitrary morals on OTHERS.

What are the morals of societies (and this guy) who legalize booze and tobacco that kills MILLIONS while making pot a crime--while it has never killed ANYONE?!?!

  • I agree.

    I think he would too.

The laws are the problems not the "crimes" themselves.

  • I believe his short comment on the necessity of a rethink of drugs policy was referring to something like this. The guy seems to have too good an idea of what´s going on not too realize it.

  • the solution: legalize everything, then they wont have any income anymore

  • 6 boats? how about 1 attack helicopter?

  • When you use non perscription drugs - you chose to walk with the devil.

  • legalize drugs, prostitution, and give universal health care to the entire world. Every problem mentioned in this video is solved with simple solutions for me (an idiot).

  • People these days have no backbone, they don't say no to drugs, they don't know they are better and stronger without drugs.

  • If you want a drug problem have a look at Sydney. I've worked in Canada and Amsterdam and have never seen anything like this, its nuts.

  • Globalization has ruined the safety system of the world.

  • Yer so good people get killed and criminals breed

  • This is a very important talk that everyone should listen to.

  • Legalize drugs, prostitution and drop punitive taxes and the profit will be taken out of all of this organized crime.

Organized crime can be defeated and drastically reduced if their stuff isn't illegal.

Notice they aren't running Rum anymore....

  • you got that right -- legalize it! The entire problem is either caused or exacerbated by outdated laws.

  • Brilliant talk...

  • Good talk!

It's crazy how they criminals are allowed to do their business, the corruption is deep.

  • Well, I'm proud of our Canadian Police Forces! :D

    Way to go!

  • I'd rather they spend time going after rapists and murders than people growing dope.

What a waste of time and money.

Hey, how about make it legal? Like booze? No mafia running whiskey is there? (except to places where it is illegal, which proves my point)

Misha is properly identifying the problem but is conflating its casue and its affect. This stuff is a problem because its illegal, not because its not illegal enough...

Someone needs to learn basic economics.

  • make it legal... ill give you my example here in Mexico... You can't make it legal, the only ones that can sell weed/crack/cocaine are the narcs.. because if they make it legal, and someone else starts selling drugs, they can just go there and kill them(it sounds simple and it is simple for them).

Basic economics? No I don't think so

  • The illegality is what created the situation in the first place. The brunt of coercive state power can be directed towards establishing a legal market in what would certainly be a more realisable goal that that of supply control. The latter is stupid and has been proved a failure. Basic economics merely suggests that a black market is the natural consequence of prohibition and that the arbitration mechanisms of a black market tend towards violence. Coming back from a black market is manageable.

  • That doesn't mean it's not the solution. Make drugs legal and before long the cartels have been stripped off their power.
