You sent me a response saying that you didn't know anything about Master Lead Combos. But Your 5210 is one. So, if you had a choice, which would you suggest.?
@Leesherwood Ha ha I didn't realize mine was a Master Lead Combo. It doesn't say that on there anywhere. Anyways... I would suggest you get a JCM 2000 DSL 100 head and a nice closed back 2x12 cab from Lopoline or Avatar Speakers loaded with Celestion Vintage 30s.
I see that you have a bunch of videos demonstrating marshall combos and heads etc. Here's my dilemma......After watching your video along with a all others I could find about the Master Lead series combo, I decided I would purchase one. But before I actually do, I would like your honest opinion on the tonal quality of the lead series amps versus lets say, the MG series. Is the MAster Lead series more articulate in it's tone than the MG's. I don't care about the bells and whistles on the MG.
@Leesherwood I don't know anything about the Master Lead combos. I suggest you get a JCM 800 2203X or a JCM 2000 DSL 100. Then get a nice 2x12 or 4x12 cab with Celestion Vintage 30s or G12-T75s.
You can find nice Marshall 4x12s for cheap ($300-$400). Or get a cab from Avatar Speakers or Lopoline.
If you get an MG, get the MG100HDFX head. It won't sound quite as good as a JCM 800 or DSL 100 but it will still sound awesome if you run it through one of the types of cabs I suggested.
I picked one up a week ago for £40 and i have to say its fucking ace for an old solid state amp. I have EMG 61 in the neck and an 80 bridge and you can get some real early metallica like tones with it. Im well impressed for its age (1985) and the cost.
It's got a good sound but i'm using a tsl122 at the moment and i'm looking for something closer in a solid state amp. My tsl122 durability is a nightmare and it just sits in my living room! I want to go back to solid state amp cos i know they won't let me down.
Take two amps, same year, same company same cabinet even, two 1986 Marshalls, ones a JCM 800 thats 900 bucks on Ebay, sweet sound, this ones 200 bucks on Ebay, sweet sound, very hard to tell the difference, its subtle, just one stings the crap out of your wallet and requires a tube change every six months, its like Rolls Royce vs. Jag..
Still, the JCM 800 combo sounds like choirs of angels on high and I cant afford one so I just bought a Master Lead Combo on Ebay and saved 700 bucks, rock n roll
the microphone in the camera makes a bigg difference in what we hear over what he is hearing.. lol Im sure what he hears is much better then what we hear., I would like a tube amp but to expensive and im not good with upkeepin maintainance items.
it sounds great, if you disagree you just jealous, my little national solid state sounds as good , maybe even has more chunky bass,, but this marshall sounds good, an the dude plays well too,,
@transformer01234567 you have it wrong dude. TUBES LITERALLY WILL BLOW! so you have to replace them, not solid states, solid states just dont sound as nice.
TUBES!!!!!!!! i desp. need a new amp. btw. wht are ppls thoughts on the peavey vypyr tube 60? im wondering wether to get one.. i use a, ibanez art120 through a boss metalcore pedal into a roland cube 30x, so i think i need a better amp lol. although the cube is built like a brick *cough*house and i would always keep it as a backup.
DC, was up man. I have a ? for you. Why, are people such snobs when it comes to tubes vs solid state amps. I recently just sold my ss amp for a tube. It does sound different. It has it pro and cons as do all amps. I just really sick of people being snobs about it,anyways whats your thoughts because you do know what your talking about.
i have a les paul studio that i got on sale for 400. i have played the cheaper models and they arent reliable.mine plays great and is amazing for the price. i suggest not to get the $200-$300 model because they break down easy. if you get one get it at least 400 and up
That sounds great. I have a 5210 just like that with the Celestion G12M-70 4ohm speaker in it too. Do you ever use any effects or overdrive with it? And could you tell me your settings that give you that good classic rock sound? Great playing and choice of songs.
Cool! Thanks so much! I used to sometimes run some delay and chorus in the effects loop. But I haven't gigged with the amp in years. I just have it around the house for a quick amp to plug into. It's kinda sentimental as I've had it since I was 17... back in 1986. For the classic rock type sound I just back the gain off a bit, turn town the treble to 2 or so. Crank the mids to 5-10. Bass all the way up. And turn it up loud!!
Well the BB pros are made to emmulate the pickups made in the original LPs in the late 50s and early 60s, and the 490 and 498 are POS pickups they put in studios and classics (for some time). The are 'hotter' pickups and take high gain well, but if you are playing clean or through any kind of vintage situation they are awful. IMHO steer clear of both, if you gonna get gibson pickups get either BB 1 & 2 or 57' classics.
dont get gibson pickups, only good ones they ever made were the PAF's i strongly advise either bareknuckle particularly stormy mondays or the mules for a classic rock/ blues tone. or i strongly reccomend 'Lollar' pickups, (the imperial humbuckers) orgasmic tone... lol. but they are really good i have all lollars in my strat and bareknuckles in Les paul and SG
i love my marshall, only the sound is to..... i dk its just got this muted tone to it... it sounds like the sound is put into a room and your hearing the escaping sound... its not bad just kind of weird, oh well, im happy with it
they play back in black because it is easy to play and when people look for a crunch sound they are usually lokking for a classic marshall crunch tone and back in black is a perfect example of that classic marshall crunch tone.
The impedence value was stamped in ink on the back of the speaker in mine. Its very faded, but I'm pretty sure it says 4 ohms. I think you can use a 4, 8, or 16 ohm speaker in your amp. Solid state amps generally aren't as picky as tube amps when it comes to what ohm speaker they can use.
well if you play more heavy stuff, i would get the les paul, i own both and there perfect for stuff like blues and rock, you could probably get a heavy tone out of a lp so yah......;)
i tried an epiphone in a shop and it was incredibly heavy, heavier than the gibson les paul. personally i wouldn't like a guitar so heavy. but its an awesome guitar
the dot studio kicks ass. it has the best neck profile ever, and sounds agressive. put some EMGs in it and it works fine for heavy shit. I'm into hardcore, and I know it kicks ass.
you can't really tell from the inlays. custom has the diamond inlay on the headstock, but his guitar doesn't have it. plus, there isn't any binding on the body, which means it's not a custom or standard
I had one of those amps 20 years ago, I sold it because it wasn't tube, then I chased that tone for years, closest I got was a Marshall artist 30 hybrid. Sounds good.
