Lol, yes, it has that Brubeck sound, I always wondered who the musicians were on this piece. That's really interesting.
I remember seeing a film called "Dance Squares" in grade school, but have no idea when it was made (probably in the late 60s) but haven't been able to find it on youtube, YET!
Hi. I am the artist who created this at the NFB, in 1977, if memory serves. (I don't know who Art Phillips is but that's okay). To record the track I brought in a bassist and percussionist. I indicated I wanted a piece in eleven-four (with a tip of the hat to Paul Desmond) and built on a minor ninth harmonis structure. They began to improvise and we shaped it from there. The session took a couple of hours. Pleased to answer any other questions.
Hi there, thanks for the post - I could've sworn I dug up that name on the NFBofC's own website, at the time I posted it LOL. Looks like I confused it with " Canada Vignettes: Land of the Maple Leaf". Did you get together for any other work?
In the vignettes series, I did "Faces" just prior to this one, on a freelance basis after having been at the NFB full-time for several years. It was a great privilege to work there; Canada was enlightened in its support of the arts. Amazing that the work still has a life after so many decades. Thanks very much for your interest.
Just wanted to say -- I don't really remember this one, but the "Faces" one is emblazoned in my brain forever -- fondly. :) The use of Bach for the soundtrack makes it perfect.
Artist's name is Art Phillips, looks like he was in the employ of the NFBofC at the time, is mentioned in some other work. Wish I knew the track's name, I'm also really diggin' on it.
I always thought that this vingette was very cool.
