@Talmadge50 I just started uploading a 47 video series on making an updated and more refined version of the table. It will include detailed demonstrations of many woodworking operations. Thanks for stopping by and keep in touch. Allan
@TheTheofish No but I am within days of starting to post a 40+ video 7+hour series on making an improved version has turned out really well. It incorporates all the refinements I though of while working everyday on the one you have seen. I started posting a photo a day at askwoodman.tumblr this year. There are two photos of the new table there. I am very pleased how it turned out. Even if someone does not build it, lots of interesting setups and problem solving in wood and steel.
@958kris I am so pleased how it turned out. The new one has a lot of refinements. I covered absolutely everything, so even if someone does not build the table, there are a lot of router, table saw, drilling and joinery techniques that are interesting. Merry Christmas
I really like the idea of the festool clamping system and the big drawers in your work table. I've started sketching some plans for one to fit a specific area in my shop. Couple of questons: I want to make a completely metal frame with casters. What do you think of using square tubing for the DRAWER RUNNERS that could easily be welded to to the frame? Also, what type of plywood do you use when covering it with laminate?
@958kris I am within about two days of starting to upload a 45 video series on an updated
version of the ultimate work table. For the drawer runners I would probably use angle iron and skin it with some thin wood strips so it won't eat into the drawers over time. The plywood is called Baltic birch plywood. i get it for about $40 for a 5'x5'. It is sold as 3/4" (19.05mm) but is really 18mm. Serious stuff. Each veneer is real wood and not pressed sawdust sweepings. Lower toxic level too.
@958kris Drilling the holes in the top can be a real pain to do accurately because of unwieldy plywood and lack of throat on a drill press. I will show a simple guide box that a stout 1/2" drill can be locked in that drills PERFECT plumb 20mm holes. This drilling jig also has a fence so hole in-line alignment is perfect. I will post a video just on the jig too.
Allan, I've now watched a few of your videos and you've convinced me to add the 20mm holes to an outfeed table I want to build. Can you give some specific measurements on how far the holes are from the sides, from each other, from the next row/column, etc? Also, did you use a hole saw to drill them? And iPod did you drill them straight down? (meaning with a hand held drill it'd be hard and with a drill press you wouldn't be able to get into all the places to drill) any info you can offer would
@mattprzybylski Today I will put on the final finish coats on my new completely documented Ultimate Work Table. You are right, the difficulty of drilling all those holes plumb and accurate with hand drill is tough. I made a simple box inside a box 1/2" drill that guide lets me drill perfect holes quickly. It even has locator indexes and fences that can be moved so drilling lines of holes is a snap. Email me and I will send you pics and talk about spacing. askwoodman @ gmail
Great I love the table, and I agree abot the drawers, but where are some plans or some closer pictures so we can see those steel square tubing up close and how exactly they are adjustable? Really enjoy the vidseos keep them coming
@jk4bs What timing. Today I started full sized drawings and video of another one of those tables. There will be a lot of cool stuff in the videos about router work, milling lumber, dovetailing drawers, measuring and marking, steel fabrication (without welding) etc. If you have watched my other stuff you know I am pretty long winded so you can be sure every aspect will be covered in eye glazing detail. Keep in touch and thanks for commenting.
I also drilled the festool holes all over my out feed also works really well. Love almost everything Festool also. Agree also love poplar & european beech from a price point very reasonable. Small shop ideas need to be well thought out this qualifies big time! There is an adjustable table too but no storage so i think yours rocks thanks for sharing
@secundus64 This table is my tablesaw outfeed also. And with all the holes drilled in the top like a Festool multifunction table it is where I do 90% of my sanding because of the never ending choices for work holding. The big drawers are also great for quickly clearing the top of "stuff" that just seems to gravitate to any horizontal surface in my shop.
@amanderik Thanks for watching and commenting. Whenever I get down about my lack of space I think back on the shop of the most talented woodworker I have ever known. His shop was a tin roof awning attached to an old animal pen. it was complete with dirt floor and plastic sheeting walls. He has upgraded since then, but for the many years he worked there he produced pieces that were beyond compare. Keep in touch. Allan
@ivertiz79 Thanks for the comment. I plan on making an updated version of this table and documenting it with video and drawings. Thanks for watching, I really enjoyed your video of Trans Mountain Highway in El Paso. That is a crazy road. keep in touch. Allan
Thank you for taking the time to show off your workbench!

Nice work! Be honest, how many times have you accidentally pulled the drawers all the way out?

@legeir007 Never. They are 5' long.

Very cool. Great space efficiency tips.
But you want a small shop? Try making an 11' x 12' space efficient. ;)
