I saw them live on Saturday and my god, what characters they are.
For the encore performance Pino simply uttered, "Johann Sebastian Bach." The first 5 seconds in, I looked over to my friend and we both started cracking up. Apparently Bach composed "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
Yes I understand Andy had his influences as well as these people did but two songs that use the exact same techniques on the exact same instrument will always sound a bit the same not that that's a bad thing. Candyrat's music just all ends up sounding like this, there's some variety in there but most of it heavily resembles andy mckee's styel that he uses in drifting, as shown above.
I love Andy's music and he is playing here July 17th. I don't see the connection that you do. I think these guys are a bit more diverse in their approach as a group and if you listen to them playing solo you may see more of a difference. The bottom line is though, we both enjoy good music listening to Andy.
...so a bunch of different musicians from all over the world, some electric and some acoustic, all use exactly the same techniques and instruments? Even to say one musician used the exact same anything at two different times is an example of the problem here. To say ALL of any group is one way or another is ignorant. Even if you listened to every single song, which you haven't or you would know some artists play rock, who are you to categorize everyone on a record label as diverse as this?
@Gigglebooster comparing this to Drifting is like comparing an apple to a roast chicken. Sure they are both types of food, but they are completely different when you investigate further. I guess fingerstyle music like this is an acquired taste that only a certain group of people can appreciate.
Andy was inspired by others! Here is a quote from his promo material. "After starting with an interest in electric guitar, Andy turned to the acoustic guitar
at the age of 16 and began enjoying and studying the music of Michael Hedges,
Don Ross, Billy McLaughlin and Preston Reed. To this day he still sites these
four musicians as his primary influences in acoustic music." Pino and Stefano site Michael Hedges as an inspiration. Maybe that is the connection some folks see?
Really, precusion on the acoustic and then using tapping to get the sound of multiple guitars, I'm pretty sure that's the exact same thing as drifting. They're obviously diffrent sounding but still the same style, all they do diffrent is add another person to get another depth of instruments.
@Gigglebooster Are you saying this a knock off of drifting? I really love Mckees music, but its unfair to other players when you think anyone with that style is a Mckee knock off; he's not the first person to use that style
hey can anyone explain why almost all instrumentlists are playing with guitar cornered to a knee (sry for bad english) i mean i play instrumental myself but i don`t do that
that is the classical way of holding the guitar, so when playing classical guitar your are taught to have your guitar like that.
since Pino and Stefano had a classical training they are used to having the guitar like that. I guess Sergio is the same case although I don't know for sure if he had classical guitar lessons, but I guess he had
Please don't take this as a negative "nay-sayer" statement because it isn't, but I sometimes hold the guitar this way because it allows for better control when doing things that are more technical, when strumming I drop it down parallel to the ground.
yeah your right I guess, most of the time I hold my guitar parallel to the ground but when playing Pino's Fase 1 I prefer to hold it like Pino does. I guess it has also something to do with how you aproach the strings, because your nails come at an angel when having the guitar horizontal, and when holding it the classial way you strike the string right at an 90 degree angel
People who learn classical guitar are taught to hold it like that. Depending on how you play, holding your guitar like that could make things easier (like fingerstyle).
The septuple metre is really cool. It takes talent to be able to keep it so tight in such an odd timing. However, I would say that this song is far inferior to the other one, the funky sexy republic or whatever.
@NicholasWiltrout theres seven beats per measure. Thats extremely rare. Im not even sure what its called to be honest. Either heptuple or septuple I imagine.
Pino has a Martin from I believe 1957, in the time where Martin actually made good guitars.. there's nothing about them. They're just really good guitars.
@AlexLococo gulp because at best, I thought I might hear some transcendant, mentally-stimulating music. I wasn't expecting to be stimulated in such a primitive, longing way.
its cool for sure but around 1:40 it just took me away into another place and just felt it. really helped me relax and face the second half of my shift.
it's amazing what u can do with guitars...although this is not the best performance i have seen...art comes in many forms...i just happen to prefer solo artists like for instance Don Ross, Andy McKee or Ewan Dobson...those three are imho the top guitarists that i have heard so far. anyone who objects is welcome to do so, just give me another example as i love finding new *AWESOME* guitarists :)
Those guys are great, and I don't disagree. Since you asked, probably my favorite guitar piece of all time search : john butler trio ocean. Pick the first result. Apparently there is some degree of improvisation every time he performs it, and I have seen versions I'm not a huge fan of. Maybe old news, but I love it.
LOVE the vibe, but it sounds like what Michael Hedges did alone with just one guitar.
