Capitalism is the wage slavery of immense humanity in a politically manipulated MARKET SYSTEM of artificial scarcity and manipulation to perpetuate the conditions of servitude and exploitation of the working people in the interest of the owning/ruling elite. Capitalism is historically outdated, dangerous destructive ,dehumanising and devaluing all and everything in its insatiable, nomadic rampaging of profit . Capitalism is evil
Exactly the same thing that goes on now with the Middle East. Journalist literally forget the events from two years ago if they go against whatever Washington's position happens to be at the moment.
Does anyone know if Chomsky ever talked about being influenced by Fromm? They sound a lot alike!
@Diosibundo Not sure but they are both from the far-left, both are critical of Capitalism of course.
Besides being an influential linguist, Chomsky has been criticizing Capitalism, especially the largest Imperialist State today, America, from the perspective of a historian (illuminating crimes of America).
Fromm on the other hand is of the Frankfurt School, a Neo-Marxist school (revision of/updating Marxism influenced by Freud, Weber, Kant). He is from the theoretical/critical perspective.
Depends... What do you consider "far left"? I mean, Stalin and Lenin seem to have a lot more in common with Rush Limbaugh than with Chomsky or Fromm, who I think would be a hell of a lot more comfortable with Thomas Jefferson's ideas than Mao's.
The whole "Left / Right" spectrum seems kind of... I dont know... not super useful when you actually start talking specifics.
@Diosibundo Lenin and Trotsky were right-wing variants of the socialist movement, this is evident if one studies the history up to the Russian Revolution. I wouldn't consider them the far left. Stalin was even worse than Lenin, much worse in fact.
When I speak of the far left I speak of libertarian socialism, social anarchism, left-communism, council communism, democratic socialism, etc.
But don't you find that speaking about this in the US is very difficult? Most people here think that "Socialist" means "Government Run" and call that "Left" while "Right" means...
Actually, I dont really know what the hell they mean by Left and Right. Its a very frustrating conversation to have, especially with self described "Libertarians"
@Diosibundo In America, socialism has a bad name. I live in Canada. In America, politicians stay distant from socialism, U.K. is opposite.
"I am a socialist not through reading a textbook that has caught my intellectual fancy, nor through unthinking tradition, but because I believe that, at its best, socialism corresponds most closely to an existence that is both rational and moral. It stands for cooperation, not confrontation; for fellowship, not fear. It stands for equality." - Tony Blair
Yes, it's so sad. By the way, an amazing phenomenon - after a while the propagandist starts believing his own propaganda. E.g., look at the Pope, the better he preaches the stronger his flock, and the stronger his flock the more convinced the Pope is that what he says must be true (a million lemmings ...) (I'm russ from the AJ chatroom, thanks again for the link)
Never mind, otherwise , soon you´ll be sick. This is a massified world , under rules of unpersonal market forces. The important thing is to keep the line of discussion . But , it is a fact, E Fromm urges to reborn in the universities .
I was already 8, so sad I wasn't exposed t his ideas, tenderized, to my tender ears, in my formative years, to inflect my formation in a more positive direction, away from retribution, towards changing our criminal justice model to a peace-yielding restorative actually just model...
One of The greatest minds of the 20th century and is virtually ignored.

In theory I belong to the far-left.

@Diosibundo The stupid tea-baggers love to bash the government, but well, lets see what the Federal gov't in America has done.
It ended slavery.
It enforced the Civil Rights Act and desegregation.
It gave women the right to vote.
