@aarontsmall1975 - We're having a pretty good discussion here, aren't we? Must say though, many years ago I worked on Alexandria Station NT and didn't hear it referred to as the Top End. That seemed to apply to statons around Katherine - Auvergne and Willeroo to name two of them. Guess we'll just have to live with your thnking it is such and such and I'll go on thinking it is something different. Thanks for time to reminisce - good to hear from you, mate...
I've been a fan of country music for all of my life, having grown up in California's San Joaquin Valley... That being said, I absolutely LOVE the Australian slant on country music, and Slim Dusty is the best of the best. I especially love his version of "Waltzing Matilda," which is one of my all-time favorite songs. Slim... we love you and we miss you... thanks for all of the great music that you've provided both your country pals in Australia, but for fans like me, in the good ol' U.S.A.
@webheadted - Nice to hear from you re Slim Dusty. Wonderful singer was Slim and an absolute Aussie icon! Don't think he ever recorded a bad song and from what I've read including the comments here on YT, Slim is the real-deal. He is missed.
Had a drink with him many years ago at three ways when I was in the army. We were traveling to Darwin from Brisbane for an exercise, Slim came out for a yarn with a few of us. Great bloke and missed very much,
never heard this guy before probably has somthing to do with being a canuck at the north freaking pole. I'll tell ya what though I like it, good music glad I found it.
Yet another A-Grade, Gold-Standard Slim Dustry gem of a song !! Tells a wonderful story of our great stockmen up in the QLD North Country. Also brings back meomories of better times & an era when Australia was a different kind of place .. peopled by more-traditional-style, old-fashioned Dinkum Aussies .. who called a spade a spade, & who could relied on as mates who wouldn't let you down ...
@colindominy - Good comment. Might I make a point though? The Top End really refers to the NT from Katherine up to Darwin. I've never heard it applied to the Gulf of Carpentaria or anywhere in NQ.
I'm not trying to be a smart-aleck but just thought I 'd add this observation. Does anyone agre with me here?
@paulkate72 Nope, it refers to the Gulf right across the 'never never' to north of WA. IMHO it applies to anywhere to the North and the West of Julia Ck/Cloncurry.
@aarontsmall1975 - Thanks for your input. Don't want to get into a debate, but am sticking to my comments. Oh, you might start north from Mataranka, but I believe it's only the NT that's being referred to when we talk of the Top End. Cheers!
@paulkate72 One of the best features of people living in the area in question is their willingness to (1) have an opinion; and (2) stick to it. I wouldn't go so far north as Mataranka but, I'd go from north of the Mt Isa Railway line - to Tennant Ck (otherwise you are missing Brunette, Elroy, etc.). Put it this way, anywhere ringers (jill/jackeroos) have to drive at least 2 hours to the nearest pub if they get hoisted from one (former barmen from the top-end, by your definition & mine;))
Yet another A-Grade, Gold-Standard Slim Dustry gem of a song !! Tells a wonderful story of our great stockmen up in the QLD North Country. I love slim dusty music, I lovd my time in austalia its the only place I would live outside of Arizona. The stockmen and ranchers there are Anumber1 great. Thanks for the music and showing this azcowboy a fantastic time...I will return
Strike a Light, Slim Dustys rolling over in his grave, instead of enjoying his great music everyones gotta have a flamen winge about who's aussie and who's not, and ranches/homestead and who really gives a flamen hell honestly, Slim wouldnt of cared what you call it to be honest he woulda been happy to yarn no matter where you came from, so lets pull it in a bit and just enjoy Australia for Australia, and stop carrying on like a pack of drongo's!
Love Silm and love this song....The greatest insult you can give a ringer is to call him a Cowboy.....cowboys are the broken down old men that can no longer muster and have to tend to the garden at the station and milk the cow for milk each day.
hey mate, been a stockman for 20 years, done some work on some ranches in the US but always call Oz home, these guys are not faggotts, just cattleman just like the rest of us, did some hard work there, and got busted in a few rodeo's, but Oz is def the harder country, I am biased though, but made many great friends there, and lining up for cheyenne,
hey mate, well if you wanted to be a proud Australian its dead fuckin easy because mr kevin rudd lets any tom, dick and harry into the country. nd no im not payin out on you its just coz kevin pisses me of.
I agree with you there mate, It is getting ridiculous with him letting every tom, dick, and harry in to Australia, especially when they are taking over the Australian jobs (mainly all the japs, and chinease), Mind you Australia is fantastic over this side (in the country) no japs or chinease people will have a go farming etc... So its still good here for now.
I'm not racist, and i am sure your not either but Kevin needs to learn something. City is full but country ain't!
You understand that 200,000 immigrants will come into Australia this year just like they have every year since Howard doubled it from 100,000 in the 90's. You country boys probably voted Nats so dont complain when they went ahead and let him do it. Your votes set it up all Rudd is not change what you guys voted for.
Too bloody right, Crickey33. First priority is protecting it from the muslim scum who plan on turning our great nation into a muslim shithole! If the self-hating, guilt-ridden lefty wankers object..........we can fix them too!
hey listen Rickdownunder28, u obviously are not from Australia if u have that tone and as far as the legend slim dusty goes, he would have more talent in his smelliest fart then u would in your entire body, he has past on but will always have an impact, how dare u come on here and say what u r saying, u have no clue do u, everyone is entitled to an opinion but to keep bringing him down, thats a no, i bet u have a thousand and more guys wanting to kick the shit out of u,

Hey, nah im not racist it just annoys me our cities are getting over crowded, and your from bathurst right? well i know its not to bad round that area because i live in kandos.
You're the goose! Then what do you call em a tree house?? Listen you fake wana be Aussie I call em what eva I want to call it! I called it ranch house because im speakin to a yank.
Hey! Fake wanna be AUssie I call em what eva I want! Me house is me house, If I wanna call it den I call it den. But for all the wanna be Australians out thea a ranchhouse is a ranchhouse! Dumb dick head!!! F- for you bloke.
haha your a joke mate. first of all what kind of an aussie calls there place a ranch. and then you go insulting slim with the bull shit your talking about. get a life!
Im an Aussie farmer and I love the paintings and photos. Do you know where I can buy some, I will like to put some in my ranch house up in Queensland.
@mrtibbs6912 . . . I once met an Aussie cattle farmer who wasn't pleased at all with my calling him a cowboy. He said, " listen young fella, cowboys are American ranchers, us Aussie cattle farmers are known as Stockmen, and we've been stockmen since early 19th century when we arrived here from England."...so there you have it, such proud breed !!
