  • I remember being at a party when this first came out. This guy kept playing it over and over...and I loved it!! :)

  • Not bad...

  • even though they wrote the song

jimi was seriously doin more on one guitar than all of these guys where at once

    no dissing these guys though

  • thats so heavy and loud!!!!!!!!!

  • Golden Cups is THE version...

  • Arguing about which version is better is like arguing about whether my dick is bigger than yours. Of course it is.

  • I can hear "I'll feel a whole better" by the Byrds in this song.

  • Good post for posterity. Not quite up to Love's or Jimi's versions, me thinks (who cares?), but fairly tight and lively. These was the band which tried to steal the song from BIlly Roberts, but fortunately he'd registered it already in '62. What a song!

  • This version was the only one played on the dominant a.m. radio rock stations in the pacific northwest in the mid sixties. When f.m. radio started playing what was then referred to as underground rock in the late sixties, Jimi's version became dominant. I liked both, however, The Leaves version is my favorite.

  • i meant machine

  • how about the music machines....they did it in 1966 on the talk talk album

  • i have the video of them doing this song

  • This is STILL King Tone!

  • @djangoharrison jimi hendrix...

  • nobody covers this version. They all cover Jimi's version. hmmm i wonder why? maybe it's because his version is the best.

  • @SaypheZonE Actually, the Byrds, the Standells, Love, & the Safaris used the original arrangement, which is this one. The Music Machine introduced the arrangement of Jimi's cover.

The Leaves are the only ones to chart with the song. Jimi's version got big in the years after his death. You don't hear this one much mainly because Classic Rock stations don't play 60s Garage Punk.

  • This is definitely the best version... And the Byrds version is definitely not the best. I love Fifth Dimension & Younger Than Yesterday but their Hey Joe is just odd.

  • @Tooindieforyou But the drum fills on the Byrds' version are awesome. If you ask me, it's hard to decide which version is the best, especially since this is some kick-ass, sloppy garage rock, and not all versions are.

  • @GuyWithNoName67 I don't really think David Crosby's vocals fit the song.

  • @osterotto puto és tu madre , pendejo de mierda, usted no sabe lo que estás hablando pendejo puto de mierda _|_

  • @djangoharrison I like Roy Buchanan's version better than this on and Jimi's.

  • Yawn.

  • Buchanan- Hendrix-Leaves- Byrds: in that order for me atleast

  • Best is original, assholes. This is the best and end of this child fight

  • @djangoharrison Agreed

  • @djangoharrison nooooooo! the best version of this song is the one jimi recorded at winterland without doubt... watch?v=RKZ2n--8DP8

  • @osterotto Jimmy Hendrix es puto.

  • @Zeta439 HOW FUCKING STUPID ARE YOU !?!?

  • @GoLarkOnUrGoKart Go and fuck yourself

  • Taking nothing away from The Byrds, Tim Rose, Jimi and whoever else, this always has been my favorite take on Hey Joe.

  • I didn't even knew that this isn't Jimi's song... But we everyday learn something... But which version is the best? You wanna know? I'll tell you just one thing... When Jimi played songs of others, he played them as good as the original one... All along the watchtower (bob dylan) and also this song they are just good in Jimis interpretetion as the original ones are

  • I think just about everybody but Lawrence Welk did this song. Of all the various versions however this is the best! A hard driving garage and classic if ever there was one! Jimi Hendrix was great but this version makes his sound like elevator music in comaprison!

  • @shwesq

I think I heard the Lawrence Welk version. Polka-tastic.

  • For the zillion cover versions of Hey Joe, this is the one I first remember. Hendrix' version was a little later & it's very good, too. 30,000 hits on You Tube? Wow, it was a major hit when I was in the 8th grade, near LA. It's passionate, angry, and this band, an American band, captures that very well. The British Invasion was in full swing in 1966. It's compelling, driving, convincing. Powerful guitar and bass work. Hard, driving drums. Strained vocals. Great finish. Hail the 1-hit wonders!

  • I m from Mexico aWay

  • @ferocel Nuggets is definitely the best 60's comp I've heard ever. Nice to see a fellow fan.

  • I bought this album back in '77 from a tiny record store on College Ave in Berkeley. I wrote the initials BRBK on the album sleeve which I'm sure represented the name of the store. Any old time Berkeleyites remember the name of that store? Seems to me it was next to a 7-11.

  • Jimi is the man, period, but you always have to put the creators of anything 1st. I'm a Jimi junkie so I know that he was hangin' in L.A. at this time and probably dug these dudes and was paying homage. New York is always trying to claim him but he was a left coast kid who spent most of his time on the Left Coast, North and South.

  • The Leaves did it first... end of story!!

  • @mlstrazzo

No, bro. The Leaves did it first AND better. That's the end of the story ;-) (sorry Jimi)

  • i cant choose between this or jimis one and tbh i dont care, its just awesome anyway

  • In my entire life (I was born in the 60s) I've only ever heard the Hendrix version. It wasn't until band practice the other night that all three of my band mates were incredulous that I'd never heard this version.

  • prefer jimi's version but this is alright

  • Garage Bands are the best. As a kid, my older bro and a few friends and I had a garage band in Costa Mesa,Ca. We were "The Flies" and we covered Bob Dylan's " It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" - not bad for being in Elementary School. We wore oufits like the Flinstones...we were too cool in the OC! Thanks great to hear this version. In i980 I had an art band called "Headband" in Albq.,one of the best punk scenes in the country back then.Listen to my nieces band "Rusty Curtains" post-post punk.faves

  • I love Jimi Hendrix to Death, and I heard his version first, but i absolutley ADORE this version!!! Im glad i did my research about this :)

  • I was 7 when my brother's band did this version. I always thought The Leaves were the first to record it. Not sure who wrote it. Great stuff here! Brings back a ton of memories.....

  • Pretty awsome seriously, I like Jimi but still a great version. I think this is the one that stands out the most. I also like Deep Purples version.

  • The sound quality is effing beautiful!

  • #43 best songs of the 60s The Leaves- Hey Joe

  • Wow Are You guys really fighting over which version of Hey Joe is better? Just shut up and listen!

  • @tictokmagikclk55

    I agree, don't argue please

  • @tictokmagikclk55 Yeah, it's just awesome that's there's 3 versions! It's like 3 different songs

  • @tictokmagikclk55

Especially since there were no less than 20 versions between 1966 and 1967 alone.

  • Actually like this version (The Leaves) more than Jimi's.

  • this is such an awesome song

  • er, guitar,I mean,,,better go back to middle school,

  • Once you hear this song, you never forget it...most unusual gutiar work ever...remember this classic from my middle school years, thanks for posting,

  • growing up in southern california this was the version that ruled the airwaves...it will always be thee version.....

  • Yeah, that's the way to hear it. Cranked it up and jammed. Never heard the stereo version before, and I thought I'd heard them all. Is it vinyl?

  • @ibdaman56

this version isn't vinyl, I got it off a CD don't remember the name of it, I can go get the name if you want

  • @marrrrrrks

nuggets by any chance... if not i recommend it...top album of 60s psychedelica etc ? :D

  • Obviously Hendryx loved this song or he wouldn't have been inspired to do his own version. Personally, I've always liked the original. Faster, more driving and exciting.

  • This {Song By The LEAVES} Will Always Be The BEST Version Of HEY JOE---It Was Ranked On The Top 40 Music Hit List In Los Angeles In The Spring Of 1966 On 3 AM Radio Stations {{93 KHJ, 98 KFMB, & 1110 KRLA}} Many Groups In Between Did The Song Like The Standells & Arthur Lee & Love--Did Pretty Good Versions--- But Hendrix Ruined This Song Like He Ruined Gloria--He Was Better When He Stuck To His Own Stuff...............{Like Manic Depression}....

  • This was the only version of Hey Joe I had ever heard before I heard Hendrix's version back in the sixties. I like both versions. This version has a pre-punk rock style to it.

  • Hahahaha someone disliked this video

  • thanks for putting this up, these guys rocked hard early on. I like the Roy Buchanan versions better than anyone's but this great too.

  • ps.....Hendrix stole the guys lick at 2:26!

  • @RazrHawk81 No, its a proven fact that the hendrix version is better.

  • @sc4433a but my jerkoff opinion is right.

  • @dannydavis94 This version is classic 1960s R&R, and is better than Jimi's version !!!

  • @RazrHawk81 No its not.

  • @dannydavis94 To you it's not, but to everyone posting to you, and saying the Leaves version is better, it is !!!

  • This came out before Hendrix (as far as I know) and my band covered it in 1966 in Boca Raton, FL!!! I played it with my Hofner Club bass through a Fender Bassman piggy-back amp! GREAT TUNE! Thank you!

  • Great version. The guts of the song is the stunning chord sequence - composed it seems not by Billy Roberts in his1962 'Hey Joe' but seven years earlier by his girlfriend Niela Miller in 1955! The song is 'Baby Don't Go Downtown' and even features the question and answer lyric format. Seems Roberts ripped her off bigtime. Miller's achievement is practically lost to history so go check it out, it's gorgeous...

  • DIOS MIO QUE BUENA ROLA 100% ROCKERA DE 1966...TIEMPOS EN DONDE EL ROCK AND ROLL ESTABA EN VIAS DE DESAPARICION. FANTASTICO!! ADORO ESTE TIPO DE MUSICA

  • I always liked this much better than Hendrix!

  • i like this verison alot more then jimi hendrix`s take on it just because it rocks alot harder

  • my freind im young i love garage this is true to the form psy, good for you to put real music here. beyonce can shove a rocket up her bum.

  • best take of this tune i've heard.. thanks for uploading.. fabulous tune!

  • Love this version, they play the hell out of this on Sirius Radio Underground Garage, and I never get sick of this song! I dig that bass line!

  • @gangesexcavating Sounds awesome! I have only heard the Hendrix version before this.

  • i like this version better too

  • Beauty in art is in the eye of the beholder. This version was recorded while Jimi was still playing with Isley Brothers. He tributed the song by creating his own version which was great but it was DIFFERENT than this one. Better to some folks and not to others. Grown up guys.

  • jimi hendrix's version is waayy better

  • @dannydavis94

    no way

  • @dannydavis94 - You're a fool.

  • @PadreArnaldo oh come on this is crap compared to hendrix

  • @dannydavis94

your trying to convince people that their opinion is wrong, that doesn't work, people don't just stop liking things because you tell them to...

  • @marrrrrrks they better or else

  • @dannydavis94 - Hendrix's version is crap compared to this one.

  • @PadreArnaldo i do believe you are mistaken

  • @dannydavis94 - You made a video of yourself lip syncing to a rap song. Your opinion of music is invalid.

  • @PadreArnaldo ok that was a joke i dont even listen to rap music jimi hendrix's version is still better

  • @dannydavis94 - It was a lame joke. This version is better than Hendrix's. And use periods in between sentences, you might look like less of a fool.

  • @PadreArnaldo ill admit that it was a lame joke but jimi hendrix version is still better and this is youtube not english class no one cares about grammar

  • @dannydavis94 I care about grammar. Fool.

  • @PadreArnaldo u are a fool 4 thinkn tha leaves version r betta thn jimi hendrix

  • @dannydavis94 - u are a fool 4 talkn like dis.

  • @PadreArnaldo Hendrix's version is crap compared to this one? Really? I don't know why you guys are even trying to compare the two, it's like trying to compare Hendrix's version of Watchtower to Bob Dylan's. They are completely different. Hendrix's is slower, more intricate & grooves more, while this is harder and rocks more. There are always going to be opinions, but to say either version is crap is ridiculous.

  • @PadreArnaldo Oh and without this version there wouldn't be Hendrix's, and if Hendrix hadn't of popularised the song with his version then there wouldn't be the myriad of covers there are today. They are both equally good in their own right.

  • @dannydavis94

well, i'm not sure, i idolize hendrix. but both versions are just great :D

  • This is just Great Rock N Roll

  • Awesome song. I have to say I like it better than Hendrix's version.

  • @PadreArnaldo

    so do I

  • thnx for upload =) we really need a good quality!

  • @Holms

    sure no problem
