@MrsColorfulSocks Haha, guess I wasn't the only one like that. I watched his videos with my parents what I was a kid and this one always scared me too. But now that I'm older I love it LOL.
@MrsColorfulSocks Same here. We had this set on VHS. Loved the tape, I probably wore it out watching it so much, but this one always scared me! lol. My loved ones would have been alone back then, ain't no way I'm sitting up with a dead body overnight LOL
Who is the actor playing "Uncle Fred"? I have noticed that he uses a lot of the same people in his videos *which I LOVE* as they are as familiar as Ray is.
@jazzdrake That's cause you have never set up with the dead, I can tell if you had you would have more scared when that cat screamed and wailed. "I aint siting up no more, since the dead started sitting up too.."Going to do this tonight at open mic in long beach and see city folks reactions. lol..

Ray Stevens is a hatemongerer, and what's more he has no respect for the trials a family must go through in order to bury their loved ones. Everyone who likes Ray Stevens must also subscribe to a lifestyle of xenophobia and necrophiliac obsession of the dead. But, on the other six fingered hand...
@johnnythunders3 Oh please.....Stop taking a simple song so serious. It was meant to be fun. Thats all. Nothing more. Just a laugh at old time ways. Lighten up a bit.
The guy who played Uncle Fred also played Bobby in the Ernest movies. I honestly think Ray Stevens, Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall, and Cledus T. Judd should do at least one song, or possibly a show together. That would be one funny combo, now wouldn't it?
Classic!!!!!!! True Story I swear!!!!! Back longgg before I was born, it was customary to do this..They didn't have to embalm the body..This story was handed down from generations..Like my grandparents on my mom's side..grandparents..The guy who died was a heavy smoker. So people are there at the family home-my mom was raised in...They thought he was dead..When in fact, he was in a coma!!!! He raised up and asked for a cigarette and scared the shit out of everyone there!!!!! LMFAO OMG
There's an even better video of this. I did this once. People drinking and partying around. It was an odd experience but I can say I did it and that's what they wanted. A request is granted. Now that I think about it, if I had close family, I'd really like this as long as they had fun and put a few samples in the casket for me!
now thats funny. roflmao. it reminds me of when we moved into our grandmothers house to stay since our house had burned down. so anyway. we got to cleaning up and moving old stuff around. and low and behold we found a old magazine belonging to my wifes grandpa. whats so funny is he was a pentecost preacher. roflmao.
MY friend's Step dad asked To have that Played AT MIdnight after his wake. NOT sure if they Did. But Hun SongI thinK THE LateGReat Lewis GARZard TOLD A sImilar sTORy
here in oklahoma we have a indian tradition to bring the dead home the night before the funeral. and sing and eat. and some would drink. but anyway we brought momma home that one night. and we was sitten there and my aunt walked into the room she was looking at momma when she fell over momma with a heart attack right there. so uncle leon dialed 911 and here come the ambulance well we was all standing around her and when the techs got there we had to move so they could work on her.
part 2 of my story. so anyway we put aunt rita in the ambulance and then while they was getten ready to leave the fireman showed up for first alert and walked in. well we was trying to pick momma back up and put back in the coffen. so with everybody standing around momma they didnt see the casket. they told us to move so they could work on her. well we did. and they went to do cpr on momma and noticed the casket about then. that fireman let out a scream and cussed us out. he told us to move.lol
This is my favorite Ray Stevens song/video. First time I watched it I was six and what I remember most from watchin that first time was the morticians trying to keep him in the casket!
hahahaha i had that tape too! dang dude that tape was a major staple of my childhood. it made me who i am today haha. thanks to whoever posted this video. five stars.
My family still have the "sitting up with the dead" ..only I dont join them anymore..We build a bonfire and the younger generation has a poilite lil kegger OUTSIDE away far away from the body
Uncle looks so much like my 79 year old dad its uncanny. I bought the video for him years ago and he loved it. He's quite the prankster ad if he could go out that way he'd love it, me,not so much!
I always sing this at my neighbor down the street, because when his grandmother died, they had the wake at home and someone had to sit up with the body. What made it worse is she had died in the house. That was one long and strange night!
Fun song!! And Uncle Fred's that silent guy from the Ernest movies. I can't remember his name, but he always hanging with the chubby guy from Hee Haw.
My grandma had the tape too. My sister and I watched it about a million times. The best part is, we still find moments to quote "'Rev, that kitchen ain't got no door in it!' He said, 'Don't worry, son, it will have in a minute!'" That's the best part of the whole song.
What really gets me is that Ray is so clean, yet his stuff is so hilarious. Both my grandparents had these tapes and we had to watch it EVERY time us grandkids were there.
lol I'm convinced that every kid who grew up in the 90's grandparents had this vhs(including mine)..i forgot all about this until today..used to watch this stuff over and over when i'd visit the grandparents haha
this soo funny because my grandparents also had this lmao i loved it then and still do ray stevens is amazing!!! i also love its me again margret... the streak.... lol and purple people eater does anyone remember ray stevens purple people eater lol i love em all rip grandma but she loved this video!!!
dude i remember when I was a kid growing up in the early 90s in Alabama my grandparents had this video and I watched it religiously. This one scared the fucking shit out 0of me.
This song is one of my favorites. I used to love watching my grandpa's VHS of Ray Stevens with my grandparents. They're gone now, and I have the tape. I still watch it, too.
Isnt that Janie Frickie at 1:22 with the flowers on the hat to the left of the screen? I can hear her sing the backround of this song, yet, I was wondering if that was her in the video?
never heard this one, and its funny! I have set with a dead uncle, and I can tell you, I aint doin it no more either! Dear Aunt, wouldnt leave him, still believed in sitting up with em. No children, leaves me and my mom. We had a similar experience, I said something to my mother, she thought I THREW my voice as she put it, and it came from another direction. Spooky night, and I wasnt saved at the time. But thankfully, sitten up with the dead has gone out of style, cause I aint doin it either
i had to sit and wait at 15 years old for the peopl to come get my grandpa it was me and a hospice nurse and him that was it and she left the room and i got up to move sumthin and i guess my arm was close to the bed but all of a sudden his arm fell or sumthin and it scared the holy hell outta me i shit my pants
haha cool! my grandma let me borrow hers for a year but then give it back when we came down to her house the next summer! Ray Stevens is AMAZING!!! me and my brother always sing the Mississippi squirrel song cuz we go to our gmas every summer!
i have this on vhs still. ._.
