My volvo's been in a flood :| There was nothing wrong with it though, but it's a 240 and they're unkillable (only front of it was under water) Just towed it up with a tractor and it started up fine.
(Yes i was drunk, but i didn't drive it an inch, it rolled down a hill and into the water) :) Good times.
the best ones are theft.. typically there is little damage and the damage that is there you can usually see quickly.. we have owned one of those but I avoid most of them just for the sake of avoiding a headache..
@kary1982v6 Good call! We had a car stolen- bought it back and made some great lemonade of that lemon situation. I've since sold that Civic and it's still on the road as a daily driver with almost 300K miles on it now.
I have owned 2 vehicles that I purchased from insurance auctions and as long as you clean them correctly then you can get years of quality survice from water damaged vehicles. However even I would not purchase any vehicle that went into salt water.
OMG i have a disco ball in my shop as you have one too! i put it there years ago as i got it from a skip across the road. and what do you use to determine the error codes ? diagnosis plug into laptop or something ?
@ndchevy Super clean water is weird stuff. At high altitude over the ocean where the air is clean water can become super cooled to like 40 degrees below zero without freezing. This sucks for Jet liners who's PITO tubes get frozen instantly as the become a contamination/catalyst.
yew I did know that, also the reason you can't use a conductive fill switch in a distilled or ro storage tank, generally you must use a mechanical float type shutoff switch
Lightning strikes to a vehicle also create nightmares. Had a guy who has a '99 F-350 Dually with a 7.3 with 400k and it got struck by lightning and he has had to replace just about every electric motor and computer that thing has.
@briansmobile1 That same guy's wife left him and his other pickup got stolen and then totaled. When he bought another pickup like the wrecked one his kid put it in a ditch and totaled it. All this within a 1 year period.
If I was you I would tell the owner to return the car unless the owner put it in the water if so tell them to contact insurance co and turn the car into a scrap yard otherwie there could be a car fire I have see flooded cars catch fire weeks after they dry out.
I see so many flood vehicles go through auction that are not branded salvage and never hit carfax because no police report or insurance claim filed, they get traded in and dumped back out to the public. also Brian, you might wanna send the water thing into mythbusters and see if they will fill a bath tub with distiled water and toss in a toaster :)
WHY NOT JUST GET A CAR THAT WAS NEVER IN A FLOOD??

And to anyone it might concern, DO NOT BUY A BOAT THAT HAS BEEN USED IN SALT WATER. Unless you like replacing...you know, everything.

I assume you can swap out the entire wiring harness and ECU and call it a day. Oh, and every sensor under there as well.
