This was exactly what I was looking for - thanks. My only addition to this would be the fact that the MacMini could be HDMI'd to your TV and (probably with a Thunderbolt external HD) be a media centre as well...
Buy a macbook air and a Thuderbolt display.. and no there are people who still need laptops... I will not buy a iPad and I know a bunch of people who wouldn't own a tablet
Interesting! Good to know what is possible. I love my Mac Mini even though it's 6 yrs old now. Considering an upgrade to an Intel version, but want portability such as what iPad offers. I also want to do without DSL. Thanks for the food for thought
So you never showed how you use the mouse. I've tried this setup but can never get the mouse to work with it. I can use the touchscreen, yes, but the mouse cursor is invisible on the iPad.
4:18 = 3200$. Really, macbook pro, iphone, ipad, mac mini, apple keyboard, magic apple mouse. Any imac? And in your closet, i guess you have ipads hanging and each pick a new one. Each day throw iphone and take new one?
This combo issent that good for games or somthing that requires performance that requires a "real" screen. VNC is good, but there´s a lag between theese two.
if iPad could have an input for video it would be so much nicer.
I do my stuff at my MacPro and have an iPhone as portable device. Have an MacBook but its nor heavy or boring I belive. My girlfriend do have an iPad. Good stuff. But using it as a screen in VNC, it has big issues. Better to have a random screen for the station work.
Problem I have with this setup is the Mac Mini and ipad just cannot hold up running what I use for editing software. Way to slow and lags a lot. Great video though!
If you are bored, have a spare few minutes and want some entertainment, why not take a look at my video of me dancing with my dog ? Just click on my username and the video will come up, Nicky xx
This is essentially the future but if I am on the go or want to even move around the house and mix music or video edit this set up is not practical. A MacBook pro 13 inch is still relatively portable and ad versatile as this and when they slim the pros down next year I think the 13 inch pro will still be a better solution than this.
I think a Macbook Air would've solved the (too heavy) problem.. cause i'm pretty sure a $500 mini, and a $500-600 ipad is pretty close in price. He must have feeble arms if he's too lazy to carry a LAPtop and would rather waste $1,000+ on essentially 4 separate devices that makeup one function
Thanks. This question has been vexing me. I sold my iMac and donated my Windows laptop to my daughter. I have itching to use a MacMini, but if I want to take it anywhere if will need the peripherals, too. I do have iPad2, so I think this is a good idea. Will it also be possible to connect iPad to MacMini via the Remote app (over wifi)? I could connect to my iMac, so I guess that's possible with Mini, too.
This is not fake, he says he used vnc to connect the iPad to the Mac mini, easily done, but is usually used when you don't have access to the system ( Mac mini ) so this is an interesting way using it as a screen. Likely there is lag and this system would not be usable, at least by me.
I understand where people would want a laptop, but this is essentially the future. A detachable screen that turns into a tablet, coupled with a home-base desktop that can wirelessly sync and update. Though, at the moment, it is a bit wacky... Wait for the technology to develop a bit more, and it might win out. Maybe not specifically in this... iPad-Mini sense... But... He has the right idea.
I bought MBP+ipod-touch for iOS dev, I do actually wish I got mac mini+ipad instead, but thats because I'll always keep a Desktop PC (windows+linux) as primary computer. I do get the idea of mac mini as a *transportable* computer.
Its a shame that the move to cloud i.e. people handing over their primary data & processing to centralized services controlled by someone else does indeed mean desktop machines and even laptops will get less commonplace.. bad for society (eg diaspora* > facebook etc)
Don't listen to the haters. If you're in a situation where you have an iPad and can't afford to buy a whole new $1000 Macbook, this is perfect. Thanks for the video, but can you make a tutorial? It would help a lot.
You sure like to spend money on unnecessary things right. I mean, why would you buy a mac mini just to use an iPad as its screen while you sure have a great machine beside: a MacbookPro. And also Macbooks aren't over with the iPad. Each of them has its use and its grace while using or well, try to edit something using final cut pro in an iPad (or even iPad 2)..
I don't think you made a new type of computer. You turned a 4-800$ iPad into a monitor. Honestly this doesn't make any sense to me. The mac mini has HDMI out. Why would you want to work over a VNC connection when you could just plug the mac mini into the HDTV you likely have and use it like a regular computer. Then you can just VNC if you really want to log in from the tablet while having a normal computing experience. Anybody who would buy Apple products specifically for this is strange.
A little funny, since mac mini isn't THAT portable, if you go somewhere you HAVE to use power outlet or you have to use iPad. MBP can just use battery (which lasts very well) So I still think that the MBP is a better option. It just seems so troublesome going somewhere having to plug in the mac mini get your kb and mouse out get your ipad out and all that. Rather than just open a laptop and at the most plug your MBP into a power outlet, much easier imo.
This is really sweet! I'm thinking of getting a mac mini for school and I already have an iPad 2. I assume it doesn't work well with gaming but none-the-less your setup is a great idea!
Ipad's are ok but in their present form you can't do any serious work on them. If your macbook pro is to heavy as you say, try the macbook air as it is both light and powerful. Of course you are free to do as you wish but if you need power on the go then this is your best option in my opinion!

I love how people just aren't understanding that the Mac Mini IS the computer. The iPad is just used as a monitor but wait...IT'S AN IPAD, a separate system that you can take anywhere.
@AibalBlog The design is gorgeous & It is fit for purpose - those two combinations on it's own means that the MacBook Pro is anything but boring.
Couple that with some pretty impressive computing power and the outputs needed for a Desktop solution, I would take that over this utterly pointless setup any day.
Having said that, that is my opinion and I did find your video very interesting, so thank you.
How is it possible that no one realizes besides the author that this is all the functionality and portability of an iPad with all the power of an iMac in one portable set up. All for less then a macbook pro that can't do touch or inexpensive iPad aps (mini=699$ + iPad2= 499$ = $1200). It's a deconstructed touchscreen laptop with iPad apps and os. The future of computing will be constructed versions of this. Touch screen laptops that can ideally separate.
@9tomorrowsband lol iMac power? wtf , iMac is much more powerfull than this , also a laptop wtf? you need a powerplug to use the mac mini , imagine taking this all around , would be annoying , there's no use in this actually , unless you don't have any other screens than a iPad which you clearly need for installing , just buy a macbook air if you want to have almost no weight , cheaper + same power + an inch bigger screen! this just laggs way to much
Why do people need the newest everything? I have all Apple products but I didn't spend nearly as much as this guy. I do everything this guy can do for under $1000. Buy used.
@bgggbb I'd maybe buy a used desktop, but never a laptop/tablet/smartphone -- way too personal. You ever touch a keyboard or mouse at a BestBuy? AIDS.
this is a Viable option for students, take your Ipad to lessons for note taking and such, use your Mac Mini for all other processing and essays etc. When you leave your dorm, its simple to take with you
I disagree about Laptops going away. I like my macbook pro. I like tablets to but tablets are limited to what can be done on them. Macbook pro's are pretty powerful. So powerful that Apple doesn't really need to release an updated version and I love the Aluminum Unibody.
@Yippykaiyay An iPad running OS X would likely shut down the PC industry and give Apple a giant monopoly. The government would never allow it. It's the same process that canned the iPhone Nano and the game console Apple was producing in 2006.
@peacefulpony good point. but isnt microsoft running a monopoly already, since all pcs are sold with microsoft windows? if apple were to bring some mix of iOS and OS X, they would be leveling the playing field.
@peacefulpony seriously, what? there's no way that either of things would happen; I love my Apple kit, but business is all about Windows - and Apple are already seeing their smartphone market lead with iPhone eroded by Android devices.. ..Apple have fantastic kit and great Ideas - but everyone else comes in and does it cheaper.. ..no way with Apple's mind set they would ever have a monopoly.. ..nor would they ever want one, it would devalue their whole proposition...
@peacefulpony "An iPad running OS X would likely shut down the PC industry and give Apple a giant monopoly.".... Whatever it is your smoking, I want some of it. Now, in all seriousness, as great of an idea that "An iPad running OS X" would be, PC's will never die.
31 people are haters. sometimes a technology comes about that "closes the gap" for the regular person.. do i do any more than listen to music, watch netflix, check email (which for the most part goes to my phone), check FB, surf for content or just play a simple game now and again? no, not really. i have had the same asus eee netbook for about 3 years now and it's held it's own for a looong time but i think he's right: the age of the laptops (for some!) really is coming to a close.
@AibalBlog: If you're seriously getting rid of a Macbook Pro for this combo, then you clearly do not understand who the MacBook Pro is targeting. You also seem to choose form over function.
This would make more sense to me if the ipad was somehow serving as the interface device for the more powerful computer (with monitor/tv) rather than as a tiny display. Otherwise, why not a macbook air? Not quite as powerful as a mac mini, but still a good compromise between portability and power, without any setup mess.
So if you don't like your Macbook Pro because it's "to heavy" Can I have it? I mean not to sound like I'm begging but you did say it's "boring" Have you given it away yet? If not I'd love to get a word from you back.
Just got a mini today, and while I got a nice monitor to pair it with I plan on getting the iPad 2. Do you think they'll be a way to directly connect a Mini to an iPad 2 through the iPads HDMI connector?
Hey im looking to get this type of set up myself, what pogram are you using to connect the two?Noticed you mentioned VNC, is it hard & could you use the ipad around the house while still being connected to your mini? Thanks bro, i could really use your help man!

spenceboy592 9 months ago
I disagree about Laptops going away. I like my macbook pro. I like tablets to but tablets are limited to what can be done on them. Macbook pro's are pretty powerful. So powerful that Apple doesn't really need to release an updated version and I love the Aluminum Unibody.

can you do these with an iPhone?
If you use iPad 2 do you still need an other monitor to start the connection between the iPad 2 and the mac mini?
You had not start the 2 from 0 so they are on line

sunderhoeksema 9 months ago
nice idea. what VNC client did you use?
...and you could've shown off the real capabilities by setting this up and then going and sitting in your armchair to access everything from there.

why doesnt apple just make an ipad running os X?
Yippykaiyay 10 months ago
@Yippykaiyay An iPad running OS X would likely shut down the PC industry and give Apple a giant monopoly. The government would never allow it. It's the same process that canned the iPhone Nano and the game console Apple was producing in 2006.
peacefulpony 10 months ago
@peacefulpony good point. but isnt microsoft running a monopoly already, since all pcs are sold with microsoft windows? if apple were to bring some mix of iOS and OS X, they would be leveling the playing field.
Yippykaiyay 10 months ago

"the age of laptops is over"
so long as people keep a home COMPUTER in conjunction with the tablet.
If everyone gives their data over to the cloud, that will be a Bad Thing. (centralized control, with middlemen between you and your data)
or so long as the tablets are proper COMPUTERS. (such as the androids that can run a propper linux desktop)

Is it really works? ( with ipad 2 ? )
izikeee 10 months ago
31 people are haters. sometimes a technology comes about that "closes the gap" for the regular person.. do i do any more than listen to music, watch netflix, check email (which for the most part goes to my phone), check FB, surf for content or just play a simple game now and again? no, not really. i have had the same asus eee netbook for about 3 years now and it's held it's own for a looong time but i think he's right: the age of the laptops (for some!) really is coming to a close.

cool idea, very expensive though and if you think that laptops are aging and soon to be over your so wrong!
neville78 10 months ago
@AibalBlog: If you're seriously getting rid of a Macbook Pro for this combo, then you clearly do not understand who the MacBook Pro is targeting. You also seem to choose form over function.

Can you still put games into the Mac mini and play them with the iPad screen such as sims
greenfreek19 11 months ago
This would make more sense to me if the ipad was somehow serving as the interface device for the more powerful computer (with monitor/tv) rather than as a tiny display. Otherwise, why not a macbook air? Not quite as powerful as a mac mini, but still a good compromise between portability and power, without any setup mess.
justluckdude 11 months ago
Very nice!, but does the mac mini has a battery inside, like a phone?

This is just useless. But Apple should make a Cheaper Apple Screen (a 13" for 200$). It would look fantastic I'm sure!

So if you don't like your Macbook Pro because it's "to heavy" Can I have it? I mean not to sound like I'm begging but you did say it's "boring" Have you given it away yet? If not I'd love to get a word from you back.

Thanks for the vid!
Just got a mini today, and while I got a nice monitor to pair it with I plan on getting the iPad 2. Do you think they'll be a way to directly connect a Mini to an iPad 2 through the iPads HDMI connector?
