Sorry, don't want to spoil everything here, but imo it's not that great. In fact, I must give it another go because so many comments here cannot be so wrong, or can they...
the BEST of the BEST. the modern day dancers need to learn a thing or two from these magnificent dancers about performing as opposed to dancing. though modern dancers have the technicality, baryshnikov and makarova have that AND interpretive artistry.
I had never seen this before, such overwhelming, torturing, tragic beauty! Both are technically astonishing, but their dramatic interpretation is even greater. I love it that she is not too demonstrative, after all she is a ghost, a spectre. The last two minutes are heartbreaking, she glides away sur les points and he crushes the white flowers of his lost love. Magnificent!
I just watched the copy of Giselle from 1975 that is at the Lincoln Center Library. It was silent. But the partnership with Kirkland was almost spiritual on the stage. Makarova is such a beautiful dancer but if you watch her after you see Kirkland she looks like a horse because Gelsey was so light. I wish there were some videos that existed for the public aside from the Nutcracker.
what an amazing partnership!!! They are both absolutely amazing and David Blair's productions are the best. ABT should still do these instead of the cut up McKenzie versions.
McKenzie has no business staging ballets.....like that god-awful "Swan Lake". All of ABT's dancers, who incredible beyond anything - are wasting in these shit productions.
@pinklady80lately Baryshnikov is not the only dancer who elicited gasps from the audience by doing these. Check out Fernando Bujones (sublime; technically perfect), and even Nureyev before them (maybe not as technically precise, but full of passion).
Wish there were videos of Gelsey Kirkland dancing Giselle.

Is that stage really that small? Everybody has to hold in.
Check the second girl from the back at 0.08. Poor thing.
Beautifull performance though. Thanks for posting
