First of all, Tenchi is ACTUALLY like that towards her. Well...Maybe not in an outward and obvious manner, but in his mind, he thinks just like that. At least half the time. I can 70% guarantee it.

Having inherited Misaki's personality but adopting a Funaho veneer, attempting to maintain a regal aura but, instead, has a frail and delicate side to her spirit that inevitably draws her to Tenchi's house more than Jurai.

Guess what: Ryoko isn't that important to the show. Since you hang onto voices so much, in the original Japanese she has more of an impish/monkey personality that likes to cause trouble than a "bad girl" attitude. Hardly irreplaceable.
Heck, they only emphasized her role in OAV3 to what is always was: that of silly comic relief, after which everyone else could carry on and be an asset to the show.

The real reason was political, because some Jurians wouldn't approve of their union. But if he really wanted to marry Ayeka, there's no reason he couldn't have taken her to Earth with him, or come back for her, or even let her know where he was so she could come find him. So besides the political, he didn't want her. He wanted that other woman he married. So..the point still stands. He wouldn't tap that.

Ryoko is a cliche character. Loudmouthed, crass, violent, and cocky -- but with a redeeming side. Characters like her are common in anime, hell, they are common in bad B movies. Ryoko's personality is two dimensional and just predictable.

1) The novel is entitled "Yosho", which was written by Tenchi Muyo!'s creator, Masaki Kajishima. Most of the novel is about Yosho's boyhood, but one section of the novel details Ryoko's attack on Jurai and also has a blurb discussing Ryoko's thoughts after the attack
2)The novel also reveals that Ryoko wasn't controlled by Kagato 24/7. He only forced her to do his bidding when he needed her to do so, but otherwise let her go off and do what she pleased (this explains why he went for 700 years without coming to find her when she was trapped in the cave). During her freetime, she led a rather racy life

Well, in the OAV, Aeka is nowhere near as snotty or whiny. She may seem that way at first, especially towards Ryoko, but you find that she has good reasons for being so (Ryoko attacked Jurai in the OAV, and Aeka comes to believe that her brother, Yosho, is dead), but she mellows out as the series goes on and is much nicer than her TV counterpart.
This is my favorite video just because it deflates the Ryoko crowd. I am a Tenchi/Sasami/Ayeka fan - Ryoko fans should chill out about their girl and realize the truth.

Whether you like her or not, Ayeka is not a cliche. A person who desires to live up to a high standard of etiquette and properness that was imposed on her but fails at crucial moments. Having inherited Misaki's personality but adopting a Funaho veneer, attempting to maintain a regal aura but, instead, has a frail and delicate side to her spirit that inevitably draws her to Tenchi's house more than Jurai.

Guess what: Ryoko isn't that important to the show. Since you hang onto voices so much, in the original Japanese she has more of an impish/monkey personality that likes to cause trouble than a "bad girl" attitude. Hardly irreplaceable.
Heck, they only emphasized her role in OAV3 to what is always was: that of silly comic relief, after which everyone else could carry on and be an asset to the show.

Oh please. "The 'refined' princess turns out to be a screechy, harpy bitch" character has been done to death. You can try to dress it up prettily, but that's what Ayeka is in a nutshell. The real reason was political, because some Jurians wouldn't approve of their union. But if he really wanted to marry Ayeka, there's no reason he couldn't have taken her to Earth with him, or come back for her, or even let her know where he was so she could come find him. So besides the political, he didn't want her. He wanted that other woman he married. So..the point still stands. He wouldn't tap that.

Ryoko is a cliche character. Loudmouthed, crass, violent, and cocky -- but with a redeeming side. Characters like her are common in anime, hell, they are common in bad B movies. Ryoko's personality is two dimensional and just predictable.

you say she is cliche, but how can that be when it's back from 1993 ? i believe Tenchi was one of the very first to do this "harem" like anime genre, and many Tenchi fans praising her part.
and i can NOT see how she is overrated, since there are so many emotionally strong parts in this lovely anime where without her it would be grey and dull(IMO)

Ryoko isn't that bad. Personally, Ryoko is one of and has always been(since 2000) one of my favorite characters. Mihoshi? REALLY annoying. Kiyone? Too serious. Ayeka? Spoiled. Sasami? Amazing. And she deserves her many spin offs. Washu? The best ever! Ryo-ohki? She needs attention too.

1) The novel is entitled "Yosho", which was written by Tenchi Muyo!'s creator, Masaki Kajishima. Most of the novel is about Yosho's boyhood, but one section of the novel details Ryoko's attack on Jurai and also has a blurb discussing Ryoko's thoughts after the attack

2)The novel also reveals that Ryoko wasn't controlled by Kagato 24/7. He only forced her to do his bidding when he needed her to do so, but otherwise let her go off and do what she pleased (this explains why he went for 700 years without coming to find her when she was trapped in the cave). During her freetime, she led a rather racy life

Well, in the OAV, Aeka is nowhere near as snotty or whiny. She may seem that way at first, especially towards Ryoko, but you find that she has good reasons for being so (Ryoko attacked Jurai in the OAV, and Aeka comes to believe that her brother, Yosho, is dead), but she mellows out as the series goes on and is much nicer than her TV counterpart.

And google "True Tenchi Novels", you can find it through astronerdboy's site. It's in the book with the cover of Aeka and the section is called "Ryoko's mind". It was written by the creator of Tenchi Muyo and it says:

first of all I never said anything about who was the most popular character I said she is the most liked character, which are two different things moron, and if u check pretty much any poll based on favorite tenchi characters ryoko will always b first, and yea sasami is more popular because like you said she has 3 shows of her own because the creators decided to, and because she was an easy character to make spinoffs of, not because of wat the fans thought.

Actually, Sasami has more fans - somebody has to be watching those 3 shows 81 episodes. And it ain't Ryoko's 15 rabid fans she has worldwide, who have nothing better to do than post their pathetic worship online day and night from their parent's basement.
