  • The Punctum is a detail that pierces that punctures the heart. It is a strong emotional reaction that is unexpectedly found that impacts our mind/memory, making us hold our breath. The Punktum can also be described as that part of the photography one carries in memory after ceasing to look at the photo. The feelings it generates for the onlooker is *love*Usually news photography have no Punctum*** although it is a matter of a subjective interpretation - the descriptions here are too banal IMHO

  • I'm sorry I have to dislike this, sappy music and zooming in is not photography it does have an annoying slideshow quality to it.

Maybe we should all reread Barthes again.

  • Thank you so much I get it now!

  • This video has made me understand the concept of the punctum so much clearer! Thank you :)

  • Just a word about the "Punctum"...According to Barthes, it is supposed to be involontary...A peculiar thing that just get into the picture to prick you. You chosed as "Punctum" the obvious reasons why the photo has been taken. It should be a detail, something that personnaly strikes you and that probably wouldn't cross the mind of anybody else.

  • is the music explosions in the sky? i saw them rly drunk and threw up in the garden while they played :( barthes owns tho, nice vid. peace

  • To all of you critics out there, remember that this is done by a first-year college student and is not a Ph.D dissertation.

  • Ques: "Why did the chicken cross the road?"

    Barthes: "I am not Saussure."

  • Barthes picks photographs from very distinct contexts: using these terms both for a personal photograph of his mother and a shirtless self-portrait of Mapplethorpe for instance, obliterates distinctions between specific contexts of producing and viewing images. "Studium", as the generally coded and conventional, becomes ultimately meaningless - they're images operating within altogether different codes. And "punctum" is even more obviously problematic. I respect the effort, but...

  • The song is "Your Hand In MIne" by Explosions in the sky

  • hey thanks for posting this video. can you tell me whose music is in the background? dank!

  • I don't think you destroy a punctum by naming, in fact Barthes does just that several times in Camera Lucida, though it is correct that the punctum is personal and to say to is 'the' punctum (when specifiying what you think it is)rather than 'my' punctum is semanticly incorrect. I think your definition of stadium is too reductive: I'd say stadium relates to the cultural bckground of the photo, it is common datum that allows the viewer to interpret the 'meaing' of the photo.

  • Roland Barthes might cry if he saw this.

  • Remeber Barthes struggled to pin point his own Punctums when trying to explain them to an audience, as he claimed a Punctum is completely independent of the photographers intentions. Meaning no one can ever tell you what the punctum is of an image, because that would stop it existing. A punctum is unique to individual experience, being told it turns it into another shared experience, the studium.

  • i am a cultural studies student studying writing an essay on Roland Barthes, the main text in contention being 'Camera Lucida' it is a complex book that i think you've insulted in your attempt to "take a bunch of photographs" and inherently try to place their studium and punctum. it was very limited attempt to conceptualize a theory and put demonstrate it in practise.

  • I like it, i'm writing about visual sociology right now, punctum is something what "hits" us directly without previous analizing, you've done this very well, because this is yours interpretation

  • this is really stupid

  • The significance of the punctum and studium is their co-presence in any good photography. You've inadvertently destroyed both by dissecting the two.

  • Although I like this, and I think it's overall pretty decent, there's something that about the way you pick the punctum in some pictures that feels slightly off. Remember, for Barthes, the the punctum wasn't the "weird" in a strange photo, it became almost a melancholic relation to his own emotions. I wonder if the tree in the road, which was clearly the out of place, would be the best example of a punctum, or merely trying to place a punctum in a place it was not.

    Than again, it's personal.

  • I studied him in University.

I don't know his theory, but he is so good philosopher.

  • I think its great cheers, helped me with my essay alot!!!

  • This is very good. I am including Studium and Punctum in my dissertation in terms of viewing paintings. This was a good starting point for me.

  • I like that idea of visualizing studium and punctum very much. But I think, the photos should not be zoomed while we watch them, because zooming MAKES A CHANGE. It takes the center of the photo as the center of interest. For example, my punctum in the photo of sinking MS Explorer was the black triangle on the right side. It vanishes!

  • bella applicazione della teoria i barthes
