  • ahhhhh yes I rememeber this station well

  • Terrible, Terrible day

    : (

  • God only knows how many hundreds f times I listened to Larry and Barry and the screamer of the week......for ages waking up to the station 2 hours before school just so I could listen to more songs

  • It was retro before retro was cool. I would love to have an unscoped aircheck or two of this. There was a "Resurrection Sunday" program on old WNNX in Atlanta. Much of it was MTV stuff but darned it was good.

  • DRE had nothing compared to LIR. I am in this video. WLIR was the best radio station ever.

  • @SJGINC I agree LIR was the best I cried the day they went off the air

  • @thesmogmankills Yes, I was there when they said goodbye. I miss great radio like that. Was in the studio many times. We brought a specially made cake for their 25th anniversary. Seeing bands in the small clubs around L.I. And don't forget screamer parties. We still dare to be different and party out of bounds.

  • I miss you WLIR!

WDRE was the station that followed on the same frequency - 92.7- that won the legal battle against WLIR, and tried to copy WLIR, to keep the listeners.

  • @MrElvey WDRE stunk. I couldnt stand it.

  • Dec. 18 1987 is" the day the music died" here on Long Island.

  • no explanation about how/why the station lost the license (after a 15 year fight?)

who, what, where, when and why - basic to reporting...

  • All my HeaRLTAND FRIENDS ....NOW YOU KNOW WHy i talk like this?

  • Two other notable DJ's were Matt Cord & Malibue Sue. "See you in the next world... don't be late"

  • @RandomThoughts9ew65 LOL I remember Malibu Sue's opening theme

  • i remember clubs 007, malibu, thrush (my favorite) all played the music of this station , it was cool because guidos werent into it they thought it was gay or weird , which is ok guidos destroyed long island culture

  • @thefightbeginswithu

Not only that....Crap music from the likes of Lil Wayne, 50 Pee and the program Auto Tune have really killed music.

  • You forgot Spize

  • I remember it being called WDRE. Don't recall this segment. Interesting. I seem to recall 1988-1990 it was WDRE. Anyone know the dates and changes of the call-letters from WLIR, WDRE to WLIR?

I know WLIR 92.7 totally went off the air in Jan. `04 when a Spanish station bought them out. How sad.

  • Beaner Radio has GOT TO GO!!!

    BRING BACK 92.7 WLIR!!!!

  • I was a listener from about 1982 until the end, then stuck with WDRE for a few years. What memories this clip brings back- winning Costello tix given away by Larry the Duck, my sis going to the station to meet Howard Jones, The Cure bumper sticker contest, Malibu...

  • My sister's friend participated in the Depeche Mode "Musical Chair Contest."

    An amazing station indeed.

  • I particularly remember blasting WLIR while driving down the Turnpike (I grew up in Connecticut). Anyone remember Trulia Child and "Platter du jour?" High-larious! I got very misty while watching this clip. Has it really been 20 years?

  • What a role this station played in my life as a college student. I was glued to WLIR. I was turning people on to it. Back then only a select few knew about it. I used to get so psyched for screamer of the week. And it is the Best Damn Radio Station Ever. I got turned on to U2 and all the imports thanks to WLIR. I would buy all my vinyls either at Bleeker Bobs or Things from England record shops after hearing it WLIR. Memories.

  • WLIR RULED !! today radio suck's !! WLIR HAD Balls ,Classic rock is played out , R&B suck's, rap can die, havey metal is too much , But LIR had it just right ! any boby remember to funny Mexicans setting fire to the apartments News commencial ! Jaun... did you set fire to the apartments???I

  • @elevatorhead

WLIR also played underground dance and trance music commercial crap radio would never touch.

  • Yeah, good radio's pretty much dead. Good music, too... R.I.P. Y2K.

  • WLIR 92.7 Was the BEST !

    LArry the duck,donna donna,malibu sue.

I hope they get em all on new wave sirius channel, some of them are there now but not all.

    WLIR is a LEGEND.

Screw whats on 92.7 and 107.1 now.

  • Does anyone have a recording from the Calderone Concert Hall with Jonathan Edwards & Pure Prairie League!

  • Wow. Always heard but have never seen the faces of those great DJ's (no youtube back then). Love seeing Donna Donna I had a crush on her. Liked the reporter with the deep Long Guyland accent. You won't hear that on TV or radio these days. The station was doomed when alternative/grunge hit big as the powerful NYC stations started playing music that used to be exclusively WLIR's. As for the Spanish stations take a look at the faces around you to see why.

  • I was a very loyal listener to WLIR-FM from the early 70s to the mid 80s. It was the greatest station in Rock + Roll history.

Who will ever forget Billy Joel's debut as he sang from "My Father's Place" in 1973? He had the audience in the palm of his hand. And those great concerts by the Good Rats were just awesome!

    WLIR-FM: never to be forgotten.

  • this was a very sad day for me and for so many others. WDRE was after from what i remember and it was just as great .when they closed down and went Spanish that was the worst day .

  • Best Damn Radio Station Ever

  • "Beautiful downtown Hempstead New Yowk"! Priceless. Don't recall WRCN just WDRE. Larry The Duck looks a tad insane. Have fond memories of hearing tons of New Wave as a child in the early 1980's via 92.7 FM.

  • Hey! I made her say that!

    It is classic, isn't it?

I Co-produced and ran audio on that shoot. After the Larry the Duck interview he looked at me and said "Your kind of quite for an audio guy" I had no response! LOL

  • This whole situation has pained me so much being that i grew up listening to WLIR the wonderful music and the concerts... However i didn't know that wlir was on 107.1 and it a shame i didn't get to here it... besides what is going on with wanting all of these spanish stations????

  • Welcome to the invasion of our nation! If it was up to me only radio stations in english would be allowed to operate.

  • The Moreys have sought out to destroy WLIR and did it once again. On January 1, 2008, WLIR 107.1 ceased to broadcast.

Vic Latino was behind this Bone-headed move. Ironically, he also killed 98.5 The Bone world class rock for yet another spanish station.
