  • In my opinion, whilst Lulu has a gutsy voice, it's not soulful. Not like Dusty or Stevie Winwood. I don't remember this from Wigan and I would never call this Northern Soul.

  • she's just Great God bless Lulu x

  • Thats my point if the label was covered with adifferent artists name we wouldnt have known it was Lulu.....would we have embraced Paul Ankas cant help loving you if the artist name hadnt been changed to Johnny Caswell...just alittle debate thats all.....I went to Wigan and some of the tunes lacked soul..but they were 100mph dancers..thats what alot of the kids at Wigan wanted.....I`ll be honest I was a bit of soul snob in those days if the artist wasnt black it wasnt soul 60s black soul i craved

  • I watched 'lulu - something to shout about' last night on BBC2....it was wonderful! All respect to this fantastic singer and entertainer...this is my favourite song by her x

  • Most definitely not Northern Soul! I am old enough and wise enough and lived it - Lulu would not have been embraced by the soulies.. we left that to the Take That fans!

  • @AuthorCarla

Amazing how many other white pop artists were embraced by the rare soul scene though. Charlie Rich, paul Anka, Kiki Dee, Chris Clarke, Jackie Trent. So why not Lulu?

  • @hoopoe222 Her singles were chosen by the record company Lulu had no say she was only 17 at the time, the soul songs she loved ended up on her albums, its one of the reasons she left Decca records as soon as she could

  • @jrg135 :-) yes I'm aware of that. My point was that the "Rare/Northern" soul scene in the UK embraced all those other white pop artists in the mid to late seventies, album tracks and all. I was part of that scene but I don't remember any of Lulu's "soul" tracks being played at events that I attended.

  • @hoopoe222 I guess as Lulu's son Jordan was born in 1977 that she was off the scene in the late 1970's & just got forgotten as many people do. I rememer buying her Something to Shout About album in 1965 and being totally knocked out by it

  • response to Mrs Higgs, if this had only ever been a demo record and never released, and aNorthern Soul dj found it in the vaults of a record company, covered the label and then gave the artist a more credible name then would it be classed as Northern Soul?

  • Essence. Great tune.

  • Topgirlwith one of those voices that seemed to be coming from 10ft underground where she was stannding..........and still down to earth.......love the Scotts.Ktf

  • Nice one - love the pics and the record - viny's gotta nice, warmer sound than cold, clinical CDs, they say!

And Northern Soul - not a lot of people know that, leastways I didn't!

I have Leave A Little Love on two vinyl LPs: The Word of Lulu (Decca) and Lulu! (Ace of Clubs).

  • agree but a nice song ..Lulu earned her money

  • wow. killer song! loved it!

  • Never has been northern soul and never will be, its pop music from the 60s, I was there.

You are either young or ignorant if you think this is Northern soul, not even Lulu herself would say it.

  • @oiyoumuppet agree with you, this versions not northern soul but pattie austins is,gets played at rare soul clubs, also a version by tammbi garret

  • One of Lulu's best. Thanks.

  • brillllllll wee tune ktf

  • lets face it ok lulu never will be northern soul but lets forget that and just appreciate how good a choon this is

  • yes buddy fair arguement i do see where you are coming from.Well civillised discussion rather than arguement. Take care mate

  • Anyone know who wrote this song? Any other versions etc? Thanks.

  • @f12sysrq Credits- Reed & Conrad

    1965.

Putting Lulu at around 16 to 17

    probably the latter!

  • @bigripenanas Cheers. Wonder if they wrote any more stuff like this.

  • @f12sysrq only guessing at the Jess Conrad on the fact

that he was at Decca during the early 60s recording

as a singer? Not a clue what he sang or if he also wrote

    anything himself?

Can say that L,a.LL was released in the States on the Parrot label.

  • @f12sysrq Wonder if thats-

    Jess Conrad?

  • @BackBeatClub Thanks for that. It's a cracking song.

  • Lulu,Northern? Naw!!,now if someone like Gerri Granger sang it..................

  • @scootafran Quite agree

  • Nice song. Northern soul..never..

  • Lulu, the first woman i fell in love with in the 60's, met her and her then husband maurice gibb of the bee gees, got on well with maurice bought eachother drinks, he was a nice guy i liked him, i liked the group anyway, the time, 1969,the place, la dol ci vita birmingham, lu sang brilliantly that night and the duet with moss was brilliant, " in the morning" a bee gees song, where does time fly to?

  • WOW so soulful, this is such a fantastic tune.....ktf

  • jesus some ppl call anything northern soul......

This isnt and never will be northern soul its just Lulu doing a ballad wake up

  • @oiyoumuppet Totally in agreement with you fellow

  • @oiyoumuppet it has got that mid sixties typical style that a lot of ythe stuff that went on to become "northern soul" has ... and like i said soul singer Patti Austen aslo did this song i agree with you but can see where theyre coming from

  • @z30soulbrother Lulu was an established pop star.....nothing to do with Northern soul...Fact.

  • @oiyoumuppet so were the velvelettes , Dobie Gray the Newbeats Tammi Lyn marvin Gaye all recording songs in the mid 60s that would go on to become "Northern Soul" when the cult eventually got going years later

  • @z30soulbrother Lulu isnt and never will be Northern soul for christs sake, you could put anything down as northern soul if you wanted to

Th others that you listed were played at northern soul venues Lulu wasnt, unless you went to wigan where they played a variety of shite masquerading as northern soul

  • I Love This Track , Big Vocals, Big Emotion What More Could You Ask Of A Northern Track. KTF

  • levine..lulu..the strange world of ns.....SALVADORES..LITTLE ANTHONY...BARBIDEX...lulu...Do us a favour..

  • you dead right angus, theres too much "rare " northern dross around at the moment.

  • We need to bring back the whole Northern Soul style. In fact, we need to bring back ballads, period. Music free of cusswords, music in good taste.

  • At least she has had more favourable comments than not...... yes, most of the nasty ones seem to be from females.... leave Lulu alone ! She has real talent

  • yeah. bitches

  • OK most of us northern soul fans may not agree to this really being Northern Soul - but she has got a soulful voice and she can sing !!! Why dont you bitches leave her alone (I am assuming MOST of the nasty comments are from females )

  • NO.8 JUNE 1965 TOP40 FOR 11WEEKS....

  • oooppppsss i dont think so Lulu!!!

  • of course its soul black or white pop 6o,s its the beat and meaning that counts has anyone not heard of northern soul shufflers some of the most beautiful northern soul is slow to mid tempo

  • Nice song, noway is it northern soul.

  • This is not Soul, it's Pop. Its a ballad too, so fails the "Northern" test on both counts. Good voice though. Lulu was a gateway singer, people who enjoyed her stuff just may have dug a little deeper and discovered proper soul stuff

  • It not soul, but it's sung soulfully, so Lulu almost makes it soulful. And it's not true Northern Soul, nor is it played on the soul scene BUT you could dance in the Northern Soul style to it. It does have that dancing beat.

  • Very good song but not fond of her appearance. She just is not attractive to me.

  • dont give thumbs down for racal211, really nice comment. Dont be stupid guys. Why can't you have opinnions even on youtube -.-

Surprised it was a hit. I've never heard it before.
