The book definately goes into a lot of detail about the malaysian troops there. the problem is that two dozen or so malaysians were massacred like a few months beforehand by somali militia so it made a rescue mission difficult and becuase of politics delayed action

Actually they completed their mission. They captured all their targets and got all the prisoners back to base. This war wasnt an American war anyways we were just intervening, trying to stop the mass killing.

After reading about Bravo-Two-Zero and the Basra, Iraq police department arresting two UK SAS members while they were on the mission and learning that their embassy seige was in their own country, a job in the USA that would be done by law enforcement, I think that the SAS doesn't quite live up to their reputation. I do like the Canadian SF and Australian SAS a bit better, they just quietly get the job done and fade back into the scenery.

USMC: if you watched this movie you would see that 20,00 US Marines held Somalia from Adid, the warlord they went to capture.

UN: Pakistani and Malaysian troops were part of the UN troops who helped to extract our boys.

US Army Rangers/Delta: They who the movie highlights, and went in to relieve the Marines.

The Majority of Operation Enduring Freedom (The Somalia Op) was handled and run by the Marines.

And by the way, 19 men died, not 18

Not exactly, it was mostly Pakistani Army, UN forces, and U.S. gunships. There was just one regiment of Malaysians who brought Condor APCs which were used as fortified ambulances. So it was a large team effort in actuality.

I'm assuming that in saying "18 men die in an attempt to rescue the remaining crew" the man (one of Delta's I believe) who was killed two days later, didn't die when they defended the crashed birds.

well, I think everyone will agree that one of the best sources for information about Operation Gothic Serpent is the book Black Hawk Down by Mark Bowden on which the movie of the same title is based. he interviewed a ton of people in the battle, all of whom are listed as sources at the end of the book, and he is frequently invited to military occasions as a speaker about the events that happened in Mog that day. Naturally, the book is pretty different from the movie, but its very detailed.
