I personally feel that The Band's version, and this one in particular, is better than The Who's or Marvin Gaye's. Guess it's just which sound you prefer.
my dad made me listen to these guys when I was young and ignorant. I'm still fairly young but not that ignorant and I absoulutely love these guys. one of my all time favorite songs. I even named one of my cars Ophelia in honor of them.
Actually, the original recording was by Marvin Gaye, under the title "Baby Don't You Do It".
The Who recorded it a couple of times: once in 1964 when they were still calling themselves the High Numbers, and again in 1970 as part of the sessions for the aborted "Lifehouse" project.
I'm still partial to this live version from the Band, myself. To each his own.
totally agreed, Charlie. This song "hooked" me about two years ago and I can't get enough. If you do some research on it, you'll see it's been covered by just about everybody. And, the song never got airplay on those so called "classic rock" stations back in the '90s. Go figure...
This is forever and ever my favourite song of all time. I listen to it constantly. I actually think the horns make it. The Band just make everything spectacular.
This quality is terrible

...this is pretty tight - i grew up with the ragged version on the VHS mix of the last waltz which had the grungier bass intro...

I always loved the Band's version, but Marvin Gaye's original will always be the best version.

I also like The Band's live version performed at the Winterland for The Last Waltz. Not too fond of the Who's take...
