@XxxxvioletrosesxxxX lucy was 14 at the time of this video and has since passed of old age. The big guys name is Tolkien he was about 5 or so in this video. We have owned various breeds of dogs growing up and such over the last 30 years, and berners have been the absolute BEST out of all of them, hands down. They are sooooo sweet and full of personality. My boy is half Bernese and half Border Collie--- and he is exactly the same when it comes to wanting a ride! It took me about a day to train him to wait at the top of the stairs so I could open the door to the garage-- at first he would just plow down and clog the passageway! Now he is so good.... he waits until I say "OK." Then he plows down! He sits in the rear passenger seat in my convertible.
I like your dogs but I think that u should take them for a walk and not a car ride to trim them down a bit because they will soon have hip problems or heart problems etc. I'm so glad to see that u love them. They are very lucky dogs.

i am researching bernese mountain dogs and some websites say they are energetic and need long walks, some say they are calm and fairly lazy and need about an hours walk or less, who do i believe?
@cherryandpip they LOVE walks and really need them to stay healthy - with any large dog you should be comitted to provide them them the appropriate level of excersize. With that said, they also love laying around on the couch with you and overall pretty calm. Id believe both :)

One of your's (i am not sure which one) had slightly shorter and less curly fur, is there a reason, has she/he had it recently cut or is it just natural? :D
@Nygel36 do you know if it is possible to get them groomed and have the fur cut to a (fairly) short length, as i have seen pictures of some fluffy furballs like you said, and some with shorter fur? ps. sorry for all the questions : )
@cherryandpip At that point i would just get a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog instead of a Bernese Mountain Dog. Google some images of it, i think that would be right up your alley.

I love the greater swiss mountain dog, but i hear they are quite rare, I am not sure i could find one near me, bernese mountain dogs are also lovely so i think either would be great!! I love the fluff of the bernese mountain dogs but im not sure i could handle the shedding! :D
@cherryandpip No problem! The shedding is part of owning them - so if it bothers you then yeah it would be a problem for sure. You get use to it and find that its totally worth it from the joy they bring you (if you are not super ocd about black hair on stuff everywhere) Good luck with whatever direction you go in!
@charlrogers1990 1 boy 2 girls. Two of them were fixed (spayed and neutered) but 1 was not as she was a show dog for quite some time and they dont allow you to do that. 2 would be a great number, you would be IN LOVE.. they are soooo sweet.

@LieutKusa actually no, my tolkien was named after THIS tolkien, who we lost to some accelerated form of spine cancer/disease. He went from chasing stuff around the yard and playing with the other dogs to unable to even move in about 20 hours. It was very sad but hes in a good place now, and my tolkien was in honor of him! Bella (in this video) is my tolkiens mom :)

@bocaesmipasion any dog can, its not going to be specific to just a bernese really. Most dogs love to dig, so probably not the best idea with a fancy garden.
@bocaesmipasion Any dog can dig up a garden or destroy things inside your house. Generally, dogs that are properly looked after and trained aren't destructive. It's usually dogs that are bored who dig up gardens and ruin stuff inside. Animals are like people. They have needs - walks, play time, rules. If you put in the time and effort you will have an obedient and happy dog. I think most of all, dogs respond to love. They will return it 10 fold.

@BigSamFoSho would not recommend that at all - not because of the breed, but just any large dog in a small apartment in general. If you walked him and took to the dog park everyday then im sure it wouldnt be a problem, but its more "whats fair to the animal" than anything else. Large dogs need large spaces to do what they do - run around and exercise!
@XanceMRevola I knew one as well. Biggest Berner i ever saw. He was teddy bear. being so big though took a toll on him and the owners had to put him down cause he couldn't really move anymore. That was a sad day.
This is lovely to see - you have beautiful dogs. We lost our own huge Bernese boy, Chewie, last year and we miss him dreadfully.
Chewie was at least Tolien's size and as gentle as you could wish. In his later years, when a walk became a stroll, we let him off the lead and he'd walk with us. Small kids in the park would see him, and run straight up and hug him. He'd see them coming and sit down to be hugged with a huge grin on his face...

@VampireRuki Our 6 year old male is the happiest, friendliest dog in the world; he loves kids and knows that he has to be careful around them. He's incredibly strong but submissive with other dogs. Everyone who knows these dogs loves them.

@XanceMRevola I knew one as well. Biggest Berner i ever saw. He was teddy bear. being so big though took a toll on him and the owners had to put him down cause he couldn't really move anymore. That was a sad day.

This is lovely to see - you have beautiful dogs. We lost our own huge Bernese boy, Chewie, last year and we miss him dreadfully.
Chewie was at least Tolien's size and as gentle as you could wish. In his later years, when a walk became a stroll, we let him off the lead and he'd walk with us. Small kids in the park would see him, and run straight up and hug him. He'd see them coming and sit down to be hugged with a huge grin on his face...

@Nygel36 i love tolkien barking like he is trying to tell you " hurry up! lets go for a ride! i am glad he is gentle. he seems menicaing at first but i cant help fall in love with how wonder these dogs are. god bless for then being in your wonderful home.

@VampireRuki Our 6 year old male is the happiest, friendliest dog in the world; he loves kids and knows that he has to be careful around them. He's incredibly strong but submissive with other dogs. Everyone who knows these dogs loves them.

Giant Fluffy Doggys. tolkien is so huge!!! is he just genetically like that, or a little chubby. bella the good girl who does everything she's told. while lucy is just a nut :3

i got 2 bernese mountain dogs....there interesting to take for a ride....i can only imagine three of em.....great dogs tho...very loyal and passive...great for small children

That's cute - I knew two Bernese Mountain dogs (Bouvier Bernois here in Montreal) who responded like that, but you had to say it in French "On se promène au parc?" (wanna go to the parc?) and they would tear the place apart - so excited, the best dog breed ever. Lots of hair too, yes, I've cleaned it too.
