its about time jet engines were mass produced and light airplanes were massed produced. this would drive the cost down to the same as motor vehicles. if flying was as popular as the family motor vehicle it would be so much cheaper. if we coudl some how develop landing zones and facilities to handle aircraft on a mass scale which could be done that would be awesome. will light aircraft ever reach the scale that cars have.
@210482fmj We would need to figure out three things to make that happen. A safe air highway system that can handle at least 20 times the air traffic that we see today, making the planes more fuel efficient (people wont want to spend $200 on fuel for a 18 minute flight when they can spend $10 on fuel for a 60 minute drive), and develop very short take off planes, I'd even go so far as to say like a vertical take off jet. Having runways everywhere is just not practical.
@03chrisv roads could double as runways, the interstate system was mandated to have stretches big enough every so far to land large planes on an emergency basis.
Because of GE's shaddy accounting practices, they made billions in profit and paid ZERO dollars in taxes! They even recieved billions in refunds. Thanks for helping screw our country GE.
This battle Yanks v Brits is ridiculous. Both GE and RR have risk sharing partners throughout the world. The prohibitive costs of developing engines has to be offset. Two different design conepts ie carbon fibre blades v hollow filled Titanium yes, but both have the same goal. So forget them and us - because its a 'world effort' with equally the same problems - that of making the product; light, clean, economical and easy to maintain.
@viceroytennis right! There are smart people, and there are people who argue about nonsense, fortunately those will never be in the position to actually make decisions about their countries effort. Common thing. :) cheers
Actually the scalloped cone is a noise dampener that will probably become a standard on all next gen engines. Get off your high horse, the US made commercial aviation what it is today. Not bashing Airbus either mind you.
Er hang on pal who invented the firkin jet engine??? us, the brits, in the form of Frank Whittle, and I work for the greatest jet engine company in the world Rolls-Royce PLC, HA
You brits have had insecurity issues for about 233 years now, get over it. Oh, and concerning cars, I guess if you haven't sold it, they've mostly gone under: Jaguar, Rover, Bentley, TVR, MG, Mini, Rolls-Royce, Austin, Morris, Triumph, Healey, Reliant, Caterham, etc.
Your Rolls Royce Trent engine family has major parts from Japan and the U.S.A. And if I'm not mistaken, an American company makes the fan case, gear box, and engine control system. A little American touch.
gcoochy, ok, ok, the British still use titanium blades not composite like GE right? I agree, we can't make a car worth a shit, but I drive trucks, and the U.S.A. makes great one tonne trucks. A dually 3500 duramax to be exact. I fly on a family Jet, it is a falcon 900ex, I think it is powered by garrett turbofans, it used to be honeywell. Either way, I would prefer a G 550, or G 650 with the Rolls Royce turbo fans...

Dear All,
I have some questions about psychology:
(1) Why do we love flying?
(2) Why do we like jet engines?
(3) Why does jet engines are so attractive to us?
(4) Why do we like have more understanding about aviation technology?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)

A very cool video, check out the new 747-8F, by Googling:
"Boeing hangs GEnx-2B engines on -8F, tells 747 to lose 3500 lbs"
Include the quotes.
It is interesting that the 747-8 has beat the 787-8, in the likely hood that it will take to air before the 787-8
