After over 2 years of the Obama presidency, can anybody really say that Geraldine Ferraro was wrong? For a lot of Obama supporters in 2008, his dismal performance now is a surprise but to a lot of Hillary supporters this is no surprise. I think that Ferraro has been pretty consistent with her message all her life. She represents even women of all parties. That was unwavering and true. It was her legacy and was a bold message for women. That women are fairly treated with disrespect for political gain, as Clinton and Palin were in this 2008 election. Clinton was stabbed in the back for the popular vote, being the more qualified. Obama capitalized on the media's unfair statements with winks and nods, that Palin was not qualified.

Perhaps it's a harder question than both of us are willing to admit. Before Obama's campaign, I really didn't know which effect would dominate (racism or a thirst for a post-racial America). It's my judgment that the latter is actually dominate, so a mainstream (or in O's case, a perception of being mainstream) black candidate actually benefits from his race. Still, up to this point, I believe race has helped Obama, and it certainly helped him throughout his career.

I think that Ferraro has been pretty consistent with her message all her life. She represents even women of all parties. That was unwavering and true. It was her legacy and was a bold message for women. That women are fairly treated with disrespect for political gain, as Clinton and Palin were in this 2008 election. I can't find the quote, but it's pretty clear she's talking about his race, how the whole world will look at the US differently if he's elected. Of course Obama didn't say it, but Kerry did and he's a SUPPORTER of Obama. Is he a racist too, like Ferraro? It's obvious that being black has helped Obama his whole life and now it's helping him get the nomination. That doesn't mean he isn't qualified or smart or anything else. It just means exactly that: Being black has helped him.

I have always wondered which effect would dominate. There are people who will not vote for him because he's black. But then there are people, plenty of them, who will vote for him because he is black. It now appears pretty clear that there are more people who view it as a positive than a negative. So it helps him. It helped him get into the right schools. It helped him get his book deal. It helped land the keynote speech slot in 2004. It helped him achieve hype and publicity. It's helped.

The problem I have with that thinking, is that in insinuates that no black candidate can make it without him or her being black. It insults those who vote for him.I cannot speak for other Obama supporters,but him being half-black had nothing to do with it.

That's not true, it just actually happens to be true in Obama's case. I can't fathom a no name, no achievement, first term senator exciting anybody if he were white. Colin Powell is an example of a black public figure who would have realistically been a contender for the presidency even if he were white, but once again most of the HYPE surrounding even Powell was due to his race.

He checked black and he benefitted significanly, as anybody with even a passing knowledge of affirmative action understands. Nevertheless, he did quite well in his academic career and would have succeeded in a colorblind system, just not at Columbia and Harvard Law. Of course, he could disclose his scores and settle it. I should make clear that I don't hold it against him for receiving affirmative action, even though I oppose it as a policy. Obama was only doing what was in his best interest. But not to acknowledge the truth, or what is almost certainly the truth given the available information, is stupid. Obama, in every turn of his career, has benefitted from being black. I read his book and Obama represents all Americans. Due to his mixed heritage, he looks at race from all sides, not just his black side. It is the Clinton campaign that is obessesed with race. If Obama was white, he would have won already.
If Obama is identified only with black community, how did he win Iowa, Wyoming, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Idaho, Washingotn, and Colorado? Please explain.

Neither got into a college because of their race. Neither got a book deal out of college because of their race. Neither got a keynote address slot at a their party's national convention because of their race. Neither has received immense excitement and hype for their campaigns because of their race. Like it or not, the answer for Obama for all of the above is yes.

Bush did NOT get into college because of his race, he got into Yale because he was a legacy. I think you'd be suprised if you compared Bush's SAT scores with Obama's (but we can't do that, he hasn't released them).
Obama is a smart guy. He would have been admitted to many very good schools in a colorblind system. I just doubt he would have gone to Harvard Law. If his scores were this good, he would have gone to Yale. It's more than clear his book deal was because of his race.

If he were white he wouldn't have been offered a book deal--a book which was about RACE and inheritance! Jesse Jackson, Alan Keyes, and Al Sharpton all ran for president and they weren't nearly as popular as Obama. That is proof in itself that race isn't factor.

Perhaps it's a harder question than both of us are willing to admit. Before Obama's campaign, I really didn't know which effect would dominate (racism or a thirst for a post-racial America). It's my judgment that the latter is actually dominate, so a mainstream (or in O's case, a perception of being mainstream) black candidate actually benefits from his race. Still, up to this point, I believe race has helped Obama, and it certainly helped him throughout his career.

I respect your opinion, but I disagree. I think that people who vote for or against O because of race are the minority, and you think they are majority. I guess I'm an optimist, because I truly could care less about race or gender of all candidates. My biggest problem with your opinion, is that you minimize all that Obama's accomplished by blaming it all on his race. I feel that you are demeaning not only the voters but any person of color who accomplishes anything in this country.

I never said it was the ONLY reason people vote for him. He's a reasonably articulate, if a somewhat boring speaker. He's good at seeming like a thoughtful person. He's a highly self-aware person and is very competent at manipulating his image (and voice) to fit his audience. And, as Ferraro repeatedly pointed out, saying that race helps him is not the same as saying he is not fit to be president (I happen to think he is not, but that's not because his race has helped him).

Ferraro is an idiot who admitted herself that she only ran as women candidate. In this campaign I've seen Hillary repeatedly appeal to women to help elect the first female president. I've never seen Obama do this, yet he still gets accused of plaing race card.

A lot of people are saying this comment is not a big deal and I disagree. My brother in Iraq was shot at and had to run for cover. Even though he has been in Irag several times he still remembers that one time vividly. He would not "misspeak" aka lie about it. Also if she wrote correctly about it in her book and the story was about a written speech why didn't she fact check it. Or is being truthful to much work for her. I don't trust her she has to much experience telling lies to America.
