One of the great strengths of the United States is our many diverse ancestral nationality people living in unity. While we have our troubles, they are not in our constitution. The faults are in the hearts and minds of some men and women.
I love the USA. Since the Confederate flag has been hijacked by some in the north and south as a sign of racism, then I say furl it, and let it rest as a symbol of the gallant soldiers who fought for their states, but not slavery. Dixie is a fine song.

I am disappointed at all of the hateful comments on this video, both left by the racists and those attacking Southerners. Racists, you make our great nation look bad, and on the other hand you aggressors must realize that each State in the South is a nation onto itself, and that most Southerners believe in the concepts of personal liberty, freedom, and independence that the 13 Colonies originally fought against the UK to obtain. The north seemed to forget that - thus, the civil war occurred.

Seriously though, I understand where you're coming from, but it's impossible to deny that the institution of slavery wasn't at the crux of the conflict (which also encompasses the states rights argument). The South didn't want the North to impose their rules upon them and when Lincoln was elected, they felt that that was very likely to be the case.

As so many people were slaves or indentured servants, these institutions WOULD have been overturned in a free Confederacy, because the people would have demanded it. Every other nation in the world abolished slavery without a civil war - what the rich in the North wanted was ultimately control, not freedom.

Most of what you say is very true. Only a fifth of Southerners owned slaves and only a fraction of 1% owned a significant number of them. So this was very much a rich man's war (on both sides). As for the Confederacy becoming free if they had won, that's more questionable. It's hard to compare the South with the rest of the world. Nearly half of the Southern population was made up of black slaves and the entire economy of the region was based on the cotton they picked. (con'd)

Without a slavery supported cotton industry, the Confederacy would have surely collapsed. And it's important to note that while many poor white farmers may not have owned slaves themselves, the great majority still supported slavery. Slavery was the reality of their time and I doubt many white farmers would have been keen on the idea of 4 millions blacks joining their ranks. I agree, however, that the altruistic motivations of the North were an afterthought to maintaining control.
