Ya that was very close for sure, but lucky you it was just the streamers failing to make a connection. Too bad you didn't have a video of yourself at that exact moment. You might have seen a streamer coming off your head.
Many years ago weather photographer Warren Faidley was getting ready to shoot a storm in the desert. He set up a camera on a tripod and set a timer to automatically shoot at regular intervals. He got to a safe place and started shooting with another camera. He then got a shot of a "streamer" bolt at the same place he set up the tripod minutes earlier. Streamer bolts can be just as dangerous as the bolts seen by the naked eye.
It's a great capture, but what you've got there is a reflection of a fairly close strike. If you pause it at 1:52 there's a faint image of lightning, which you can exactly superimpose on the main strike seen at 2:30. You said you felt it, and that's quite possible as ground currents can travel for some distance, depending on soil conditions.
Nice, indeed. See, the things we put at stake for the thrill of nature. I've been pretty close to lightning and jolted, but never hit. You're a survivor man.
I am glad you are still alive to tell about it. Forget these kids saying this is fake, they are obviously too young to understand what lightning can do. I've had a bolt hit the road in front of me while I was driving.. scary as hell.
this was a real storm and a real event..i also have a video of the damn double rainbow after this storm but i guess thats fake too huh ..you will have to make up your own mind.I will never forget that day!
Those Are Great Shoots Man, Beautiful Streamers As Well As Some Good Bolts. You Be Carefull Man I'll Have Some More Of Mine HopeFully Soon. Two Thumbs Man.
That must have been a horifying experience. Be careful though- lightning does strike the same object more than once. This forest ranger was struck 7 times in a span of maybe 10 years awhile back.
the faint glow u see b4 it strikes is called a positive streamer. several rise out of the ground at once but usually only one gets a negative contact thus producing lightning. yours is only the second one I've seen caught on camera.
I used an 8.0 megapixel kodak and i have original film and it is amazingly better than this one in quality...(quiktime file) when i watch it i relive it....it is so differnt than this...
Wow thats weird! At 01:15, a few seconds before the large strike there is a small discharge on the right of the screen. Out of interest what were you wearing on your feet? There is another video of a guy working on a motorbike where something similar happens, its called "Man Gets Hit By Lightning - Well Sort Of" Check it out!!!
i was already hit before i said anything or even moved the camera it was holding me..it happened so fast... xLukinx i cant explain it i just know what happened..
If you were struck, then you wouldnt just fall back and still be able to talk, and also, if you try to pause when the lightning is supposed to come there isnt any sign of the lightning..
Lightning makes many objects below it send off little flares of energy before it hits the ground. You didn't get hit by the actaully main bolt. It selected you as one of the targets though.
The acual bolt stuck on the other side of the road. The water on the ground conduced a bit of the electricity across the road and prolly branched out along the ground and hit you.
people have told me that the smaller bolts leaving the ground at my feet are static from holding a metal camera and the bolt was close enough to pull a charge.
I've come kinda close too i've had lighning come that close to our Tin roof it's not even funny

no ghosts... just streamers lightning travels up..
camelloops 3 years ago
The streamer you see is not a real bolt. It is actually a partial reflection of the bolt in the camera lens, known as the "ghosting effect."
