To make it fly like a traditional rocket you would need to add a burst disk at a single point at the bottom of the rocket. You would also need to weld on some fins and a nosecone so it will fly in a stable configuration. When the burst disk fails the superheated steam will come out and thrust the rocket upwards. It could potentially go higher than this exploded rocket because all the energy will go into one thrust vector, not in every direction like an explosion.

ok, how about using a hole saw, a large one, to score a circle into the bottom of the tank. then, weld a slightly larger piece of pipe to direct the gasses downward. the smaller hole would increase the duration of the pressure release and the pipe would hopefully help the tank to have a straight trajectory.

Bands around the tank wouldn't help anything but you could try to wrap a complete thick sheep metal part around it, sqeeze the fin together tightly with adjustable bands and then weld it. I think the first rocket might have failed because the weldings for the nozzle and fin could have created unexpected weak points in the structure. If you create a crosswise fracture again you should strengthen the bottom even more with a second extra sheet. Otherwise the whole thing will rip apart again.

I think that drilling holes (not straight through all the metal) at the "ends" of the cross-cut could stop, or at least slow down the crack from propagating too far and thus splitting the bottle in two pieces... or maybe the same, but with holes drilled through the metal sheet and then sealed with some temperature-resistant epoxy glue or something like that could work even better... just an idea, keep the good work, Dave :).

P. S. A high-speed camera would be really cool for such purposes.

If your serious about really launching apropane bottle you need what is called a burst disk. usually a piece of brass in a pipe, the pipe then serving as a nozzle. The whole idea is the burst disk lets go before the tank explodes then you have a true steam powered rocket. :)

If i figured it right, 15 sec in the air. It started and ended at 164 mi/h and traveled to a height of 1808 ft in the air. Assuming it went straight up and down. If you knew the distance away from the launch zone it landed you could figure more accurate numbers.

Hi Dave. I've thought about the notion of downward thrust. It doesn't seem possible where air pressure (steam) is located in the top of the canister and the liquid (water) at the bottom would prohibit a failure on the bottom of the canister. The top of the canister is the only place where pressure can therefore be released. Just a thought.
